First of all let me say- Are you referring to LaVeyan satanism? 'Cause it was my understanding that even though LVS doesn't explicitly support social darwinism, the Church of Satan was definitely on the right winged side politically, them (or at least LaVey) being largely influenced by Ayn Rand and all. There aren't exactly whole oceans and continents between Ayn Rand's libertarianism and social darwinism.
Ive heard meaner speak before. He's very intelligent, well spoken and a force for good in the United states despite the fucked up shit religion has done to us.
I've just watched a documentary on this group called "Hail Satan". I'm not interested in joining, even though I left the Christian church years ago. I think it's important to try and understand other people's beliefs though. It was a very interesting documentary, and not what you would think. I personally believe that they shouldn't have called their group The Satanic Temple. It conjures up all kinds of evil imagery and intent, which in fact they are not about at all. This particular guy was the most interesting person to listen to. The moral if the story is : Don't judge what you don't understand. I love it when David interviews people like this. He is so open minded, and allows the person to express themselves, and give their side of the story.
I think that’s why they call it The Satanic Temple, to remove the “evil” label that Christian push onto other groups (which is discussed in the interview)
I like this guy, very well spoken /educated,and interesting to listen too, keep an open mind guys, its not about the devil,he makes some great points, just finished watching bill mahers religious something, the documentary he did,as a former catholic, this religious shit is scary,I'm questioning everything now
The TST is basically atheist. We just have our symbols without religious. Believe in the separation of church and state. LaVey that's a different kind of Satanist.
I knew I supported this folks and hearing the spokesperson explain it only cements it. Though it is still a kind of religion and I'm not going to be joining the temple anytime soon.
mistert800 actually the different satans differed in their personalities and only one became opposed to yaweh, all the other satans generally did what they were told.
Nooo you PEOPLE ARE WRONG! the photo of this video is abaout Bephoment and at 9:31 theres Bephoments figure (Statue) and a lot of people think that Bephoment is satan and no its all wrong. Baphomet doesn't represent Satan--at least it doesn't exclusively represent Satan. Baphomet isn't even a being; it's an anthropomorphic symbol representing (among other things) Unity of Diversity. Incidentally the those are the two root words of the word universe, and in fact, the elements of the figure are meant to represent the entire cosmos all in one symbol. Others commonly interpret Baphomet as a symbol, again not a being, a symbol of knowledge, empathy for others, and reconciling and even celebrating our differences. You don't have to like the scary goat head figure, but you should at least agree with those basic principles.?
What's the point of this religion? If you have certain ideals and values, why would you need to associate them with a character you know is fictional and why would you need to join some "temple" that preaches them? A religion without a god is simply a philosophy. Is there a temple dedicated to Voltaire or Socrates? No. If you agree with them you just agree with them and don't require any religious ceremony to express it.
you're implying idol worship is a high ground to symbolic philosophy? Satan is viewed as a symbol as well as an archetype.. has nothing to do with conscious beings. if this still confuses people, that's their own shortcoming.
GentxScholar I have no problem with the philosophy, I just don't see why it requires a temple. I'm not saying a philosophy is not as good as idol worship, on the contrary: I think adding religious elements like temples and priests to a philosophy takes something away from it.
I think his reasons for calling it The Satanic Temple are strange. Also given the level of theistic extremism, I think it's possibly a little too soon to be pushing that people re-assess their opinion of the word 'Satanic'. At the moment people seem reluctant to accept people who simply don't believe in god let alone people who seem to follow Christianity's greatest villain.
You make fair points. People may be put off based on their theology, thinking acceptance of people who use the word 'Satanic' will threaten their well-being, in this world and the next (which would be the more important, eternal one). If they want that second life to be a good one, then they must reject what they fear will lose them that, no matter how much good is done in the name of Satan. At the same time, people have, do, and will likely continue to realize the emperor has no clothes, that the threat is an empty one without basis - if they can manage their emotions without relying on the church (which reinforces the belief and thus the fear), self-reflect, and think critically about what they've been taught is true. "Is this really true? How do I know? Could I be mistaken? What would be able to tell me, what would I need to find, in order to discover I was mistaken - that this isn't true?" The pairing of the word Satan and kind actions in the world done in the name can form new associations in the minds of people who might otherwise have never known or experienced anything to the contrary of the story they have reinforced to them in church. They may notice this conflict between the story of evil and the good actions of The Satanic Temple. They may come to realize through this conflict that the story they've been told may not be as accurate as they previously thought. More positive interactions mean more reason to investigate further. They might, in their curiosity, discover they agree with the TST's tenets, and may work through whatever cognitive dissonance or emotion that could arise from that, before coming to the conclusion that the "evil" ones aren't so evil after all, and that the "good" ones aren't so good after all - if they perpetuate a false, fear-based narrative to keep people from leaving, that's not so good for people. It all begins with being willing to judge based on peoples' actions and not appearances or how things seem at first glance, and being willing to be to investigate further the stories we get told before we accept their validity.
@@ZangelDemon Hit the nail on the head with that last paragraph in my opinion. Willingness. Many people simply aren't intellectually curious and you can't make them. People need a base that is religion or, at least traditionally provided by religions. It's like alcoholics - you have to _want_ to get better to actually get better.
@@letsgoBrandon204 That is the dilemma, for sure. Made all the more difficult by the fact many churches teach that doubt means damnation. Condition that into people enough and they may fear and suppress their own critical thinking. This would surely get in the way of wanting to be curious. And if you're taught to depend on God for help in regulating your emotions, your ability to cope will require you to suppress curiosity, as well. Lest, through your curiosity, you find reason to doubt and therefore risk losing your support system, your emotional comfort, AND your eternal salvation. Breaking that cycle, for some, requires being willing to risk going to Hell to find out whether or not their belief system maps onto reality accurately. A tall order. It takes great courage to face Hell, doesn't it, Doomguy?
+PRHILL9696 Sorry, going to have to argue with you for once. We use ritual for psycho-dramatic purposes and to release ourselves of unwanted emotion and feeling and become more focused in gaining our desires. There is no communication nor attempt to communicate with Satan or any other deity. Man has always been interested in the occult and feeling of the otherworldly and we use ritual to satiate those feelings with theatrical ritual and occult aesthetics. You are correct about the indirect focus on "survival of the fittest" however I am unaware of The Satanic Temple claiming to be focused on love and compassion. All respect, would you mind citing a source? There is a hierarchy within the CoS as to mimic nature itself for usually having a hierarchy within animal packs but there is no necessary association required with any other Church of Satan member nor enforcement that you agree with an individual with a higher "rank".
T.R.O. Aero No idea who you're talking to, but you do realize that the Church of Satan and the Satanic Temple are two different orgs right? You seemed to use the names interchangeably
Jan 22, 2020: This all seems a bit spooky to me! *1) Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:13-14; 2) For God did not send his Son Jesus to condemn the world but to save it. John 3:17 and 3) In Christ we have redemption through His Blood, the forgiveness of sin in accordance with the riches of God’s grace. Ephesians 1:7 Katrina, Candace, Troy and Jason
1) depends on the story. Sometimes its Satan, other times its Lucifer. They are not the same. 2) Both of them never lie, they tell the truth bluntly. Humans lie constantly and try to see truth as wrong.
Religion: a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
I still say the religion I made is the best,Marshmallow religion.Worship his marsh mellowness, and so far the only commandment I have is,Thou shalt not roast marshmallows on unclean sticks.
Why does using a concept from the New Testament seem like a viable path to ration and reason… Seems to me everything he saying, does not need to be tied to anything called “religion”
Jesus said, "I came to save all men. I desire that all who are lost will repent and call upon My name. It is not My will that any should perish, but have everlasting life. Sad to say, most will not repent of their sins before they die, and they will go to Hell. But the way to heaven is the same for all people. You must be born again to enter the kingdom of God. You must come to the Father in My name and repent of your sins. You must sincerely give your heart to God and serve Him. "
Yesssssss amen God is the only way. I feel sorry for these people! Jesus have mercy on their souls. Let's pray they repent and ask for God's forgiveness before it's to late. They still have time to repent! John 3:16
If you don't make use of rituals You don't subscribe to supernaturalism, spiritualism or transcendentalism and you don't believe in a deity and you don't meet every sunday and you don't have a holy book aren't you just a subculture or a philosophy? How does the satanic temple, or at least their set of beliefs and those who hold them, differ from randians, marxists, progressives, conservatives, libertarians, anarchists or fascists? What, exactly, makes them a religion and not a philosophy? The law does not determine what the most useful and descriptively correct definition of the term 'religion' is. A political organisation is not a religion, though a religion can (but perhaps shouldn't) be a political organisation.
Failed question by David... if you are someone who would be repulse by them simply on the basis of the name. Than you are likely not someone they particularly care to associate with.
Being an "atheist" only means to be without a god or gods. Not without religion. One of the definitions of Religion is "A pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance"
Well it depends how you define "religion" I know its wikipedia, but i believe its the closest to the true definition. "A religion is an organized collection of beliefs, cultural systems, and world views that relate humanity to an order of existence. Many religions have narratives, symbols, and sacred histories that are intended to explain the meaning of life and/or to explain the origin of life or the Universe." To reiterate "Beliefs, cultural systems, and world views" Now i couldn't find any definition for "order of existence" but i take it to mean the nature of the world itself, not nescessarily creation. Like pointed out by david, the bhudda said specifically not to worship him or take his teachings too literally. However some people actually do take it literally, so its difficult to classify it with certainty as an atheistic religion. LaVeyan Satanism on the other hand is entirely atheistic. Satan is only a symbol for human nature. As stated in the definition, it also has a set of beliefs(individualism, egoism, secularism etc), culture which can be seen in rituals(again purely symbolic, no stereotypical sacrifices to some demon god), and meaning of life(Every man must determine their own purpose) . And the origin of life or the universe varies, but is typically scientific, whether it be big bang or another theory. TL;DR: Religion can be seen as a devotion to a certain philosophy, culture., and way of life, if you take this as the definition there is nothing that contradicts the term "Atheistic Religion"
In the strictest sense, spirituality is an experience that doesn't involve the senses. That can be an aesthetic experience like art, lit or music as well as religious. Think of how aesthetics affect your mind - like magic! Except, like Alan Moore says, you really can think of it as "magic." Or spiritual. Or whatever. There. Does that work?
The Atheists don't have any symbols. However, the Satanists do! The upside down cross represents hate because there were a great number of human beings who were murdered on a cross. I don't care about religion, but I do care about seeing hate groups in America. This is a hate group!
Atheism is not a religion - religion is based on "faith" which is based on fantasies not facts. Atheism simply says there are no gods - that is supernatural beings.
For all you atheists out there....what if I told you the real world you hold onto isnt just real but its a spiritual world ? Did I blow your mind ? Call that the big bang.

Praying for Lucien Greaves and those who have been mislead. Ephesians 5:11-16 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” 15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. I love you all but Jesus love you much more. God bless!
Here's my thoughts on the concept of the devil. God created an entire reality and one of those creations within that reality was people and, who knows, maybe some other entities such as angels. Anybody's guess but I'd have to assume that everything came from God. So... as the story goes, one angel thought he was as good or better than God. Seems like, compared to God, a little tinker toy creation of his had an attitude problem. Apparently, if you have a bad enough attitude, you get to be in charge of a major department of the after-life. As the story continues, God and his own tinker toy creation are currently battling it out for our souls. Sure, makes a ton of sense to me. You better watch out what you make in your garage. Next thing you know it will be fighting to own your wife and kids and that new car you just bought..
+Mr Method They fuckin said that?! God damnit, not defending these guys anymore if they're just going to make things difficult for themselves. Sticking with the Church of Satan like I have been which is more defined in its philosophy. We in the Church of Satan, the original group created by the founder of LaVeyan Satanism that The Satanic Temple derives from argue that it's a philosophy and not a religion. But they've just gone against their own identification so I'm just going to leave them in their mess from now on. Aside from one thing because it will be in my benefit in case you weren't aware that we don't literally believe in Satan or any other god. Our Atheistic PHILOSOPHY is just based on the concept of the character Satan. What he represents that we identify with differs between our two groups.
I don't really care what people believe in, to each their own. It just sounded off to me "Atheistic Religion"... it's like "Non-Alcoholic Beer" or "Non-Violent Extremist" or "Pizza without toppings" or....I don't know what else would be good night and day comparisons. TL;DR I didn't expect atheists to start calling it a religion xD
Satan is very much a real spirit body, from the unseen world. He is the Destroyer. His sole purpose is to deceive, lie to and harm people, physically and spiritually.
It seems to me that Mesner wants to affirm morality, but under his world view, he can only appeal to things like "cognitive science, game theory and reciprocal altruism". I would say that God (not the Bible or some religious text, but the idea of God) as an anchor of objective morality in the universe is a much surer footing for affirming things like altruism...

I mean, i know what you're saying, but like, it can't see.
Odin. For sure
Zechariah 11:17 King James Version (KJV)
17 Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.
Very impressive. Sign me up.
David, wish you provided a link in the description, but I'll find them.
Thanks for the interview.
Wow I stumbled upon this by accident and was blown away because I agree with everything this man said. The point David makes at 9:00 is good too.
Eh, do you mean to say he 'makes more sense' than Lucien/TST? How so?
First of all let me say-
Are you referring to LaVeyan satanism? 'Cause it was my understanding that even though LVS doesn't explicitly support social darwinism, the Church of Satan was definitely on the right winged side politically, them (or at least LaVey) being largely influenced by Ayn Rand and all. There aren't exactly whole oceans and continents between Ayn Rand's libertarianism and social darwinism.
+Abaddon Guecubu. Goooood!
I like this guy, very well spoken /educated,and interesting to listen too, keep an open mind guys, its not about the devil,he makes some great points, just finished watching bill mahers religious something, the documentary he did,as a former catholic, this religious shit is scary,I'm questioning everything now
The most important person of our time
As an Athiest it's cool that Satanists are having a word in a country that is freedom of religion.
The TST is basically atheist. We just have our symbols without religious. Believe in the separation of church and state. LaVey that's a different kind of Satanist.
@@isaiahbangura4421 oh
If you choose the bad then you end bad.
I knew I supported this folks and hearing the spokesperson explain it only cements it. Though it is still a kind of religion and I'm not going to be joining the temple anytime soon.
Fantastic interview as usual.
Lucifer I love you khoda
Love this guy's eye. He should wear an eye patch like a pirate or something. In any case, he sounds like a pretty smart dude. Kudos to him.
Satan always got the short end of the stick.
There was the time he made a bet with god.... and won.
if you believe that bull anyway hah
The character of Satan was still a cunt, just far less so than Yahweh.
mistert800 actually the different satans differed in their personalities and only one became opposed to yaweh, all the other satans generally did what they were told.
I believe if God is real, I believe he is Evil. Hail Satan.
Omg! Doesn't that then make it the exact false religion they said the world would be suckered into?! This baphomet the evil false one !!!!
Tell me more...
This guy is cool AF.
Pretty interesting interview! Indeed they've got their shit far more together than those "Church of Satan" nerds.
Schweí Übersteigen quiet boy

That's a very uncultured way of veiwing things, nor does it hold any truth
How so?
+GentxScholar yeah, Jackass, drop some science then!
Informative and intelligent. Thank you.
If he'd remove the name satanic, he wouldn't have to spend an hour explaining that his group is just athiest.
BEAUTIFUL the Baphomet when they gonna put one in Houston
fantastic interview
What would be able to tell me, what would I need to find, in order to discover I was mistaken - that this isn't true?"
The pairing of the word Satan and kind actions in the world done in the name can form new associations in the minds of people who might otherwise have never known or experienced anything to the contrary of the story they have reinforced to them in church.
It’s been thousands of years, how long until it’s not “too soon”?

Sorry, going to have to argue with you for once.
The funniest thing about Satan--during the Adam and Eve story Satan (the serpent) is the only one that tells the truth
There is debate about whether that particular serpent was supposed to be Satan.
In Milton's "Paradise Lost" Satan is the most rational and logical character. I couldn't help wondering if Milton was speaking through him.
1) depends on the story. Sometimes its Satan, other times its Lucifer. They are not the same.
2) Both of them never lie, they tell the truth bluntly. Humans lie constantly and try to see truth as wrong.

Religion:
a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

John 3:16
If you don't make use of rituals
You don't subscribe to supernaturalism, spiritualism or transcendentalism
and you don't believe in a deity
and you don't meet every sunday
and you don't have a holy book
aren't you just a subculture or a philosophy?
How does the satanic temple, or at least their set of beliefs and those who hold them, differ from randians, marxists, progressives, conservatives, libertarians, anarchists or fascists? What, exactly, makes them a religion and not a philosophy?
The law does not determine what the most useful and descriptively correct definition of the term 'religion' is. A political organisation is not a religion, though a religion can (but perhaps shouldn't) be a political organisation.
I'd join.
I did not know there was any difference. Very informative.
Failed question by David... if you are someone who would be repulse by them simply on the basis of the name. Than you are likely not someone they particularly care to associate with.
Satanists think like atheists but God consistently loves us.
Uh... But I do insist that religion is reliant on supernaturalism... By definition. Steadman and Palmer (2008).
Even after reading all the books in his background did not give him wisdom ...

I'm hung up on the whole "Atheistic Religion" issue. I just don't understand
it.
Being an "atheist" only means to be without a god or gods. Not without religion. One of the definitions of Religion is "A pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance"
In principle, many forms of Buddhism is an atheistic religion.
Well it depends how you define "religion"
I know its wikipedia, but i believe its the closest to the true definition. "A religion is an organized collection of beliefs, cultural systems, and world views that relate humanity to an order of existence. Many religions have narratives, symbols, and sacred histories that are intended to explain the meaning of life and/or to explain the origin of life or the Universe."
To reiterate "Beliefs, cultural systems, and world views" Now i couldn't find any definition for "order of existence" but i take it to mean the nature of the world itself, not nescessarily creation.
That try being a member annotation looks really weird under that picture
Atheism is not a religion - religion is based on "faith" which is based on fantasies not facts. Atheism simply says there are no gods - that is supernatural beings.
Great interviewing.

Ephesians 5:11-16
11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,
“Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

They fuckin said that?!
Mr Method
I really disagree that it is. These guys are just losing more and more of their credibility.
Pfff, fuckin Atheistic religion.
Satan is very much a real spirit body, from the unseen world. He is the Destroyer. His sole purpose is to deceive, lie to and harm people, physically and spiritually.

You mean like other religious organizations?
It seems to me that Mesner wants to affirm morality, but under his world view, he can only appeal to things like "cognitive science, game theory and reciprocal altruism". I would say that God (not the Bible or some religious text, but the idea of God) as an anchor of objective morality in the universe is a much surer footing for affirming things like altruism...
