Quite a few “nazis in Chile” jokes, so to put things in context: our army was first based on the Spanish one but we quickly copied the French model, like pretty much all of South America, with many officers studying in France. But after the War of the Pacific (1879-1884) the government and high command decided that the French system and tactics were obsolete and were partially responsible for unnecessary casualties, so in 1888 a commission was send to Germany to hire officers to train our army, Germany was chosen for two reasons, we already had relatively close ties with them as we had big German colonies dating from the 1850’s and because their success in the Franco Prussian war. The German reforms lead by Lt Colonel Emil Körner faced a lot of resistance from more traditional officers and were one of the reasons as to why he joined the revolutionaries in the Civil War of 1891 that faced the president against the congress, were he trained the congressional army in German tactics and were able to defeat a numerically superior enemy finally winning the war. He was promoted to Brigadier General of the Chilean Army and organized the “Prussianization of the Army” in the early 20th century. In present day the Chilean army takes more inspiration in the US army for it’s doctrine but keeps visual elements of the Prussian army, especially in their uniform and parades
Pretty sweet! Thanks for sharing! The U.S military was also organized & trained by the Germans in the 1700's. The German's also discovered / invented modern war tactics. Sergeant Wilhelm, a German Storm Trooper in WW1. Invented fire & manuever tactics to cross no mans land with 3 guys and bags full of grenades. Is that simply because of their uniforms? The German dress more closely resembles that of the German/Austrian dress of World War One, while Chile’s dress is modeled more after World War Two era German uniforms and equipment.
In 1885 the Chilean government appointed Captain Emil Körner of the Imperial German Army to train its officers. After which they adopted the Prussian style uniform and Parade March.
Correct, and it has nothing to do with nazism. neither does the Black Cross on German military vehicles and insignia. The Prussian School and the Scwharzkruetz pre-date Hitler by 2 centuries in the case of the Prussian Military School, and by 9 centuries in the case of the Iron Cross (medieval Teutonic Knights). The chilean parade detachment uses authentic German Mauser rifles supplied to Chile by Prussia, and are the only military Parade battalion outside Germany to still exercise the classic Prussian "goose step." They are a well desicplines as the US Marine Capital Drill battalion. The imitation plastic helmets look a little silly though. Probably very lightweight. And, the ladies are very beautiful.

Wrong on all accounts. The Chilean Army followed the French style until the late 19th century. Later, Prussian officers were imported to teach at the military academies, and the Chilean armed forces were all Prussianized. The Prussian protocols are followed every day, even in the most mundane situations - I witnessed a officer trainee asking permission to go out the Militar School on an errand, with all manner of salutes and clicking heels. The full regalia of uniforms, bands, etc., appear in each parade in every patriotic event. The biggest one is the September 19th of every year, celebrating the Glories of the Army, on occasion of the National holidays. Look for videos of "Chile Parada Militar 19 de septiembre" of any year. The Army wears Prussian uniforms, the Navy, English ones, the Air Force and Carabineros (uniformed police), Americanized ones. And, please, google things from time to time.

The chilean parade detachment uses authentic German Mauser rifles supplied to Chile by Prussia, and are the only military Parade battalion outside Germany to still exercise the classic Prussian "goose step." Wrong on all accounts.

I think Germany should really consider bringing the Stahlhelm back as a parade helmet, it looks absolutely amazing with a grey uniform and also has the benefit of being quite comfortable, especially because of the bill providing shade from the sun
Controversial but I one million percent agree, they also should’ve kept the East German anthem because it just slaps.
Agreed the stahlhelm while controversial should not be closed off. It is best to remember your country’s history and the stahlhelm is a big piece of history. Hell it is usually best not to just assume it was a ‘nazi’ thing as the stahlhelm was made during ww1

Chilean parade uniforms are tailored and are awesome for their purpose.
Also of course both are bright, they are not from steel, wich would be stupid for a parade helmet.

And I hate the Nazi’s, I hate everything they stand for. But I can’t sit here and lie and at the uniforms didn’t look sick. They looked bad ass in a way where they were designed with the intention of making them look like an evil tyrannical army: idk, I can’t like put it into words.

Considering the WWII traditions of Germany it kind of seems like a no wise choice on their behalf. It didn't go so well for them the last time.

@nooblikeagod.- a tradition of being a nazi is not a tradition Germany has any desire to continue, at least openly with its old military garb. It has nothing to do with their losing, and everything to do with what they did and their representation. They've worked incredibly hard to try clearing their image.
