    So cool. Management advantage is the greatest. I remember watching chuck on tv when I was little. Wish I could find a career in wildlife &/or pond management. Great work guys. Your videos helped me out on my farm to.

    So 50 tons isn't going to cause enough of a PH shift to cause die off ?

    A couple follow-up questions: 1) Are there any Alkalinity test kits available to the public and 2) what was the calculation for converting pond alkalinity to tons of lime for a given size lake?

    • @seadoo9651
      @seadoo9651 7 років тому

      Chip's Outdoor Channel 90% of the pond bottem. There are domestic alkaline kits available

      The other question was how he went from an alkalinity of 8.4 to "X" number of tons of lime. Not necessarily the pond coverage of the lime (90%). I appreciate your earlier response. I apologize if I wasn't more clear.

    Lime should be added with caution and limit its raise pond ph levels a lot

    Is there anyone that might do this same pond maintenance in the southern Indiana area ?

    I watch all of your all’s videos and they’re great! I cannot find this song anywhere and i know it’s called “sacred ground” by Neal Young. Is there anyway that you can share the whole song? I wouldn’t use it for anything but personal listening, I just reallly like the song. Thank you!

    For a one acre pond can i use hydrated lime by the bag

    • @MrTimTime2
      @MrTimTime2 3 роки тому

      No! Hydrated lime does not add alkalinity (which stabilizes pH) but rather sky rockets the pH and can kill the fish.

    NOT a great idea to cover 90% of the lake. PLEASE! trust me, I've done it and all the fish died. The lime breaks down all the muck at the bottom of the lake, this requires oxygen. Especially bad on such a hot day as in the video, no wind to oxygenate the water! I really hope these gents have oxygenaters running. 30% of the lake should be done with a month break in between. This gives the fish somewhere to move to in the lake and also the oxygen levels can recover before the next phase of liming. Great to see people thinking about pond and fish care..

      So Shaun i live on a 5.5 acre pond how much of the pond should I lime and when? Thanks oh where can I find one of those test kits to check how much lime to put out?

    • @shaunh197
      @shaunh197 3 роки тому

      @@markc4921 I/3 of the lake at a time.. Ideally not when it’s hot and no wind… Liming a lake will lower oxygen levels. So best to do it when it’s colder, rainy weather approaching and windy… But if you can oxygenate the water then whenever… I don’t remember the dosage.. Mix the lime with water and spread it over the section of the lake. Last year I used something different which worked great, it’s a probiotic which can be used in water. Live healthy bacteria which do the work for you and are beneficial for the health of all pond creatures..

      @@shaunh197 The bacteria are already there... Nitrosomas is their name... you just need a total alkalinity test from anywhere... Amazon, Ebay, pool supply store, ect... need a MINIMUM OF 20PPM OF ALKALINITY to get a bloom from using a pond fertilizer. Usually ponds are PHOSPHORUS deficient... the MIDDLE of the 3 numbers in fertilizer. So many other things will help you have a healthy pond. Oxygenation with a diffuser on your pond bottom in a place or 4 is EXTREMELY important... when the bubbles rise to the top they carry or push water upwards with them allowing the mixing in the water column to bring the anaerobic unoxygenated water at the bottom that is not allowing any of the organic materials to rot because of the lack of 0² down there to be mixed and rot... that way there isn't as much sludge down there to cover your bottom and lower your total alkalinity by covering or binding up the minerals that make the water acceptable to fertilizer... like either end of the spectrum would be an old pond that's swampy & silted in on bottom versus a nice greenish/blue colored quarry lake... that's what you're after for fish... VERY few species of fish thrive in swampy soft water... For the most part most fish can survive it if it's not to bad, but they don't grow and most definitely do not thrive. The more pulverized agricultural limestone you add the better... please invest in an air pump with a few diffusers to put on the bottom to mix you pond water and watch yourself smile...
