    It's great seeing old timer machines like this steam shovel and that old red bulldozer in action.

    Love how it looks like a little chill shack, looks so cozy and welcoming compared to modern machines

    There's something about watching steam powered equipment, trains, steam shovels, cranes etc. that is just so fun to watch. Another era that will never come again but without them, what became America at the turn of the century would have never happened.

    Just love these old ladies. No fancy tin work, no superfluous styling or sophistry - just big, basic and rugged, to get the job done. To answer Frank Simba, there's a very big gear fixed on the base, surrounding the shaft which carries the upper-works. A smaller cog, driven by a vertical shaft from the engine, engages with it to rotate (or 'slew') the cab, jib and boom. As simple, and well night indestructible as that.

    So cool to see this old iron working. I work with the big electrics now but would love a chance to run this old iron. Would definitely put things into perspective

    I'm 74 yo. To this day, I call excavators "steam shovels." Because they were in the books my mother read to me when I was young.

    What's creepy about these things is the bucket actually looks like a head! And yes, I used to read the child story. The "jaw" and the noises make it even more Erie, but otherwise, it's a fascinating machine. ☺

      Do you mean the children's story Are You My Mother? by P. D. Eastman? I remembered it when I saw this. It had the steam shovel that was referred to as 'The Snort' because of the noise it made.

    Amazing old technology. And to imagine, back in the day that was the top we had in technology. Imagine what life will be like in 150 years from now when equipment is run off fuel cells combined with advanced batteries, we will wonder how on earth did we use devices that had fuel exploding hundreds of times a second in cylinders (gasoline engines). Our technology today will seem as weird as the technology of 100 years ago seems weird to us today.

    • @smh9902
      @smh9902 5 років тому +3

      People assume that electric is the future and assume that gasoline engine technology won't get any betteor get any breakthroughs. In the future I'd bet we actually get homogeneous charge compression ignition pulse detonation engines that can run on any fuel source with higher efficiency's under your hood than the coal, natural gas, and nuclear plants massive turbines get today. After all, why suffer through line losses, expensive heavy electric storage, heavy electric motors with low power to weight ratios, when we can produce the energy with just as much efficiency right where we need it? Without having to store or transmit the power?
      I'd wager that engine technology gets downscaled so that the engine for your lawnmowers, power equipment, tractors, boats, planes, and yes, cars and trucks, of the future will be more efficient than the turbines used in our power plants today.

      armored train, armed steam ships.
      they tried steam tanks but just couldnt put enough armor around everything without killing performance, and combustion engines turned out to be already tough on the crew on the first tanks so you can imagine...
