      that's sadly impossible, our planet doesn't have enough food for everyone, if it did, food prices would be almost free. The people are living longer, born more, dying less. we would need to destroy every forest to make farmland for every one on earth to eat. Giving to food banks doesn't solve anything, it's just less food for you, more food for someone else. As food prices increase, that means even less food for you, less food for them.

    • @incompleteriver770

    • @Mushroomcorvid
      @Mushroomcorvid 11 місяців тому +61

      @@prebenkul Wow, do I have some awesome news for you! Contrary to what you've heard, we actually produce enough food to feed every single person on this planet, even based on a 2000 calorie diet. The UN (and other agencies) report that we've got plenty of food to sustain even the projected 10 billion people we will have by 2050. It's not about the lack of food, it's all about the logistics and accessibility.
      But hey, even if we pretend for a second that we're running low on food, technology is here to save the day! There's the application of improved botany sciences with techniques like hydroponics, aeroponics, and purple lighting but there's also genetic engineering allowing plants to produce more food per plant with less water etc but that's a controversial solution since gmos are a complicated topic. These techniques are allowing us to grow way more food than ever before and we frankly have barely even started implementing them. If you don't believe me, check out Vertical Harvest in Wyoming who has been producing ten times the amount of food compared to traditional land usage of a farm since 2016 if you want a concrete example. It's also literally inside of a city using space that was already deforested. There are these gardens in New York City, built on entire skyscraper floors and honestly many other examples of basically futuristic farming happening.
      So, the idea that we're running out of food or land to grow it on is just a myth. It's all about how we manage and distribute what we've got. The rising food prices and people not having enough to eat? That's more about the challenges of getting the food where it needs to go and making it accessible to everyone.

    Apparently here in the UK (I can't comment on any other country), on average, 60-70% of charity incomes go on to their charitable activities (i.e. the thing you're donating for) and over 90% of charities don't have an paid workers. But I can't find a legally required minimum amount for donating their profits, maybe there is one, it just isn't coming up in my searches. Back in 2016, a cancer charity only used 3% of their income on the activity which was £27,000. Whereas they spent 97% on fundraising and other expenses - over £800,000! How absurd...

      Donating for "tax write-offs" is always hilarious to me. There are occasional tactics for it to get your income from X to Y so qualify for a government program or something. But no multi-millionaire qualifies anyways so the 20k they donate is because they want to. It provides insignificant benefit, it's just stupid not to claim a donation as you're then just donating extra money to the government unnecessarily. You can calculate it yourself, donations aren't a profit center unless you *create* a charity.

It is NOT something you throw money at to magically save you any money. Doing something just for the tax write off is setting money on fire except for low income people so they qualify for government programs (think donating 50 because you're 49 over the income threshold to qualify for welfare) that sort of government threshold number is the only time it makes sense to donate to "make money". I remember being taught to explain that if they tried to do a one off payment through the website, their would be higher administrative fees and that a higher percentage of their money would go directly to helping people if they signed up through me. I remember other people I knew not explaining that it was monthly, and calling the business to do the signup over the phone and turning down the volume or pretending to drop the phone when it came time to explain that this wasn’t a one time payment. Also perhaps make systemic changes that cause such problems needing help. Ignoring the causes solves nothing. Constantly remedying an issue is like a bandaid on a profusely bleeding wound.

    Holy shit this literally just happened to me! I got stopped outside the grocery store to donate to lung cancer research, and she managed to convince me to sign up for the konly subscription by saying that I could change the amount online and that I have full control over my donation etc. After a couple months I was like, "yeah.. I think this is getting too expensive, maybe I'll just lower my amount to something more reasonable”.
    I must have searched around that site for like 2 hours. First figuring out how to sign up and link my account to my donation and everything, and then following faq links and searches looking for a way to change my donation amount. Never fucking found it.
    I emailed them right there and told them that I had wanted to change my monthly amount but now that I found out they lied to people to keep them trapped in a donation as long as possible they needed to cancel my subscription immediately and that im never donating to them again.
    I think this was right after the second month so now im just wondering if they hide the link long enough to get a certain amount or something haha. I think I’m glad she didn’t get my commission though, hopefully she finds a real job soon.

Just a tip for anyone wanting to make a difference in their community: look into mutual aid! The money you contribute doesn't start working for the charity until you donate for at least 2 years. In the meantime, the money goes to the people raising the money. Tips I ise to avoid the kiosk people:
    - If you talk another language, use that at your advantage. They can't get the bank info of a tourist
    - Fake phone call
    - the old classic "sorry I dont have the time", works best at train stations
    - and my favourite one: "I'm already subscribed at your charity". The kiosk person has no incentive to talk to you, you stay polite and everyone leaves happy.
    Also, donate food to your local foodbank/shelter or do some volunteer work.
