    I can see why Dan didn't really vibe with most of these songs, they work better in the context of the game in my opinion, but I still think there's some real bangers and I love this OST. Here's to hoping for part 2 and maybe Joyful and the Definitive Edition.

  • @eragons1894

    This is the best example of OST you learn to love over time. First time you hear it, it feels like a fever dream, but the more you grow accustomed to it, the more you start to appreciate it for what it is.

    I've never seen Dan so at a loss for words for a video game OST. There have been odd tracks here and there where he doesn't have much to say, but here it felt like every tune was just giving him bad vibes... Which was the point, but as someone who tries to analyze video game music and apply music theory to it, it's a little difficult to do.

  • @juasjuasi4750
    @juasjuasi4750 9 місяців тому +92

    I think this qualifies Dan as entering for the first time he enters the realm of "avant-garde" videogame OST
    The soundtrack was made in a very dark moment of the author's life so i like to think the dissonance and rebeldy against conventional music theory is an expression of his pain.
    It is one of those OST's that you need to hear multiple times to fully digest it's meaning, but i love how music can become a form non-verbal communication to the player.

      I'd say the first avant-garde ost he had encountered could have also been in SMT V's OST, which has a lot of very unique choices for it's atmospheric tracks in the same vein as LISA does.

    • @iansantiago6526
      @iansantiago6526 8 місяців тому

      @@sweetwheatsy Reeling as if it was a bad experience? I didn't think it was particularly devastating, the general writing of the game makes it hard to take it seriously. Which only makes the absolute nuclear explosion that is the ending be more pugnant. However I wouldn't say it was immensely impactful. But everyone has their own piece I suppose. Love the game regardless!

    • @sweetwheatsy
      @sweetwheatsy 8 місяців тому

      @@iansantiago6526 Ah yeah, my comment was perhaps deliberately ambiguous. It was a rather emotionally impactful experience - and by that I mean that contrary to other narrative-driven RPGs in the same vein that I've played recently (such as Undertale or Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass) that have a somewhat more optimistic or atleast resigned quality to them overall, LISA was both emotionally devastating and also numbing at the same time. There were many times where my actions truly felt nihilistic - the Russian Roulette comes to mind as a poignant example of doing something that felt both narratively and mechanically meaningless, even if that was most likely the point.
      I played both Painful and Joyful and, even if Painful was overall a much better and more cohesive experience, I cannot neglect the absolute suckerpunch that is the end of Joyful. It's themes of the cycle of abuse and substances were very interessting and resonated greatly.
      Long rundown of my thoughts, I know, but it was neat to flesh them out. Let me know yours aswell if you want.

    • @iansantiago6526

      @@sweetwheatsy I would love it if we could discuss more indeed!! Not many people are in the "neo-earthbound" community, and the vast majority are too socially scared to voice their thoughts.
      Let me start by saying that Lisa the painful is not only my second favorite video game of all time, it's an experience everyone should play as well. What Austin was able to do here is simply put game of the decade material, yeah one of THOSE gems.
      However the main reason it didn't hit as hard for me is put simply, I was used to that nihilism. I was extremely nihilistic for once back when I played it, and I was already a HUGE fan of shin megami Tensei, which itself is super edgy and nihilist in it's story presentation. Then couple that up with the fact I watched a hbomber guy video on it like two years ago(so I already knew about joy and the mutants, plus the general significance of the games narrative) and you start to see why it just couldn't land like it was supposed to.
      However a game that had that chance, which I just so happened to play before Lisa, was Disco Elysium. My favorite literary work ever. So yeah poor old Lisa had a tough comparison. However there are many things which still fascinate me about the game, and I think about it constantly!

    • @sweetwheatsy
      @sweetwheatsy 8 місяців тому

      @@iansantiago6526Very fair assessment. It means a lot, your overall mindspace and what you've been exposed to before when playing something, so we definitely had different starting positions going into it. I was also not spoiled at all for the game.

    Dan your streams have been getting better and better, especially since the introduction of the whiteboard! However, the quality of analysis starts to drop off pretty consistently around the 1 hour mark, so I have some suggestions: Try doing just 45 minutes of listening + analysis, then do a 10-15 minute stretch where you just relisten to your favorite song from that 45 minute stretch (or maybe a song you think is the most 'important' to the ost so far), where you're not really saying anything, just listening to the music. Then take like a 20 minute break, try going for a walk (Einstein would often stop in the middle of his work to go for a work to refocus), then come back and do another 45 + 15 stretch. I think the overall quality of the streams could potentially go up a lot, as well as your own enjoyment of what you're doing. This is all coming from a place of appreciation for your work and desire to see you improve even further!
