I've always been amazed by this section of the river. I would ALWAYS stop here and take a dip with my guests throughout the years at the right h2o levels. Such a surreal experience.
Was shown to me in the early 90s. We would jump off that rock right into the middle of the whirlpools. It's interesting because sometimes folks would go DEEP, but other times would just pop back up real quick. I reckon it depends on one's "karma."
@@1966dc back in squirt boating’s heyday! Designs have gotten much more comfortable and higher performance - though they tend to emphasize mystery moves over surface tricks
When I lived in Charlotte, NC back in 1999 I would drive to West Virginia every weekend to kayak the New River gorge. I would spend the entire day on the river but most of it (5-6 hours) was stern squirting and cartwheeling at this very spot. Loved it so much that I got a proper squirt boat (Murky Waters Asylum) the next year after returning to Canada and enjoyed every weekend back on the Ottawa River which, like the New River, is a squirting paradise.
Beautiful shots of the seam throughout - particularly 1:30! Any special kit for the downriver snorkel / swimming setup? Super curious about what you’ve chosen for fins
Thank you! It’s a regular mask/snorkel for diving. I use DaFin Kicks for my fins, best ones I’ve used both in the ocean and the river. Not too much surface area to get in the way or cramp you up, but enough power go get you going when you need to. Hope this helps!
You posted on your Instagram years ago a video of you running a crazy line in your delirious pretty much on end the entire time. Not sure where it was but it was sick dude. Can you list that to your tube? It needs to be seen! I have to show it to some paddlers here on the Ottawa
@@RobbieGilson I can’t say where it was but was hoping you’d know the video I was talking about. It’s a very narrow steep line and you are playboating and using the features to stay vertical. I love that style of boating. I don’t see it anywhere anymore
It’s a really hard sport to get into, but so so good once you’re in! In what part of the world do you live? The Facebook group ‘Charc’ is a good place to start, and Ed at Murky Water Kayaks is in Canada and your best bet for a new glass custom boat. Dave in Asheville NC is making boats now too
Having river floated through rapids in full dive gear, and been pinned against a rock wall for a full 5 minutes till the current changed, you are welcome to it.
Waikato river, New Zealand. A rapid called ' the washing machine' River can be about 70 foot deep in places, and in some chutes only 60 foot wide. I knew it was going to be vicious......just not that vicious! Water pressure was high enough to make the second stage free flow !!!@@RobbieGilson

Didn't know anybody was still squirt boating. I tried it a little back in the 80's, when everybody was paddling Dancer's.

I almost constantly see them. Mainly on the hiwassee but there is alot more people still doing it than you would think.
