Quick tip, Volunteer at a Comic Con for just a few hours of your time and they will give you a free weekend pass. I stuffed bags for 2 hours and spent the rest of the weekend enjoying the Con.
Great intel, guys. I’ve gone to many comic conventions and my only mission is comics and original art. I had no idea the kind of dedication it took to go to one of the those events where you had to stand in line for 10 hours! Once again, I learned another good nugget of information.
Hearing about SDCC and NYCC makes me appreciate smaller shows more. Where you can freely walk around, relax, browse booths, easily make it to any presentations, etc.
lo1bo2 Two of my favorite cons of the year are small hotel cons. Completely agree.
Damaging a book is like a death. I have a few I’ve damaged 2 come to mind. Still have them, one is a minor key. When I skim by it in my short box my stomach tightens every time.
Hialeah Comic Bro the worst feeling 😢.
What i might hate even more is when you see a comic you really want thats in great condition for a super good price so u snatch it up, then a few days later when your just in a normal state you come to your senses and start thinking "i cant believe i got THAT comic at THAT price, it just seems too good to be true" so you get curious and pull it out of its bag to realize its fked up on the back or something of that sort, then it hits you why the price was so good, then right after it hits you that the price wasnt that good after all, then right after that you realize that in reality you got jipped. So basically going from thinking you got a wonderful deal on a comic to realizing you got effed on it instead really sucks. Overall i love the ppl in the comic community, great ppl. But the more ways and sources i find to buy comics the more i realize that there are some pretty dishonest ppl on the selling side, on top of the fact that alot of these damn ppl just act like theyre selling gold.
I hate that feeling. Weirdly what I focus on is the spine ticks. I CANNOT stand spine ticks in my collection; they must go.
when that tape lands on the cover.....AHHHHHHHHHRRRGRGHRGHRGH
New collecting and these videos are must watch for me. Thanks guys!
Ethan vass thanks Ethan. Glad you enjoy our content and welcome to the collectible.
My first Con I was so intimidated...I did not even buy a single comic from a dealer. By my 5th Con...I was like "I got this... the Snizzle is here!".
Snizzlepop Fo Snizzle my nizzle! Way to own a Con now.
I would like to see dealers with more clearly labelled pricing. Many dealers do this well, but since it can be such an "inconvenience" to dealers to inquire, I'll often just not ask and just walk away potentially losing sales.
Robert T absolutely agree.
How about a part 3 bout what dealers should improve on, bros
I love this idea! Number one, put down your damn phone! Number two, even if you're deep in conversation with somebody else, recognize the customer who has just come up to your booth!
Price your stuff!!!
Hialeah Comic Bro absolutely agree. So much needs to be expressed about dealer etiquette.
Kris Morek absolutely Price your stuff! Can’t stand when they check ebay
And don’t stagger your wall comics so I can only see 1/10th of the cover and the price is so small that it can’t be seen at 6 feet
I was at a con buying a bunch of asm's had a whole stack I put them down to keep hunting and someone else starts looking through my stack. Keep your hands off my books.
Darwin Gomez I feel the same way.
You couldn't pay me enough to go to Hall H! Great video as always!!
Stampede215 🤣🤣🤣
"Beebackers" are a gamble that almost always pay off for me at least once per show. One out of every ten or so DOES come back and ends up dropping huge stacks of cash. When a Beebacker actually Beebacks, it's usually "Remember me? Okay, I'm back, gimme all the stuff I was looking at AND this and this and ooh was this here yesterday throw that in too..."
Yes, People who actually DO come back generally get better deals for this EXACT REASON!
I think one area that could be a good fit for this topic is those moments when you get into a bid war with someone else for an item. I think every one has come across something at a con that they absolutely needed in their collection and then in that same moment another person also needs that particular item. You both start fighting over prices.
Retro Rookie should not work that way. First person should get the book. That’s the way my booth operates.
@@goldenageguru Of course, but I have experienced times when me and another person want the same item at the same time and the dealer just let's us fight over the prices until one gives up. Hopefully I am not the only one that has experienced this kind of moments. 😅
I have heeded y'alls advice..and have been thanked many...many..times, for employing the aforementioned rules of etiquette...thank you!
I’ve never been to a convention before but this video is quite interesting to watch. Whenever I think of a convention, I imagine people running around, just taking random pictures with each other, cosplaying, sitting in giant auditoriums, etc. it’s interesting to hear about this other side of convention.
This isn’t a one way street. Why don’t you do a video on what dealers shouldn’t do both at cons and at LCS?
Brian Bennett absolutely will make a video on this as well. Needs to be done for sure. 👍
Great set of videos! I’ve been to cons before but this will be my first time as a hard core comic collector and will be using a lot of these tips. Keep up the awesome work!
What Jeff said about patience is like one of the big ones. So there I was at a comic con and I was in a line for Lee Weeks to get my Gambit signed. Next to us was the line for Jim Starlin. What I observed was a heated argument between this man and the woman in front of him. There was some name calling about her physical appearance and her cosplaying buff Wolverine husband (tank top version) jumps in (*snikt). There was some shoving but no closed fist/claw action. Eventually a bunch of red shirts from the con come to the rescue and break it up. I believe the name calling guy was escorted away. It's sad that it had to end up like that. I mean you talk to each other and nerd out with people you don't know when you are in line for ages. Talk about Starlin's latest work or how good your wolverine cosplay looks! So yeah, patience and make new friends!
Roen Geek first of I am a fan of Lee Weeks(especially his hulk). What an intense story, sorry you had to witness that nonsense.
Great video once again guys! Extra points for the Hi-C Ecto Cooler reference! One con horror story that I saw (thank God it didn't happen to me) was someone broke a piece off of a thousand dollar Sideshow statue. I was nervous for that guy and the seller too. Yikes!
You guys made reference to waiting in the Hall H line for 10 to 12 hours?! There are people who line up for Saturday’s big panels on Thursday night. I’ve seen it with my own eyes.
yancystreetgang that’s insane! Wow, thanks for sharing that.
I'm not going to be so PRESSED camp out for 8 -12 hours just to be the 1st to hear some news from a panel celebrities about whatever is going on. That's what Entertainment tonight is for. Lol!
Ive never been to a Con. I dont have comic book friends.
Otr Trismegistus the Con is really a fun place. Friends or not, it’s usually worth the experience. 👍
I have always gone to cons alone. You are surrounded by people that are into the same this as you. I have met some great people waiting in lines for autographs or going through long boxes (dealers and other lookers). It's a nerd paradise. Jeffrey Itkin is correct it is worth the experience.
We are all your friends
Damn I Love Comics!!!
Do forget to bring snacks & drinks.
The lines to for the concessions stands seem to never fluffin move😲
robis9 they so true, can be extremely slow and over priced.
I hear the Grady twins hang out in Hall H a lot, ha!
Went to EuCon right after your first vid and went with a wad that could choke a hippo in anticipation and there were 2 dealers there. 1 dealer was super cool and was an amazingly negotiable dealer. The other was priced 4x guide on every key on his wall. 4x GPA for that matter. Is it possible to have a vid on dealer etiquette at con? If you want to be successful, dont try to clobber everyone, sell zero books because of the ludicrous prices, then never come back because "nobody bought".
Joshua ellis are you referring to the con in Eugene? I passed on that one and from your comment it sounds like I didn't miss much
Comics with Bueller yes. And no, no you didn't. My Backpack had a better variety of high end books than the walls and boxes there. Wish you would've gone, though. Need to go to a con and shop some Golden Age goodies.
joshua ellis . Well a dealer can price their books at whatever they want, whether it's
Robert T I completely agree with you. They can. But come on... Why get a booth? Waste of the dealers time and the customers. Dudes ain't selling anything at those prices. Facts. Leave the space for someone who actually wants to sell books. Nobody wants to pay entry prices to an event and have that be half of the dealer population. Honestly, it's a joke.
Thank you for the part 2 of this important subject.
3:33 i was waiting for russ to sing" i want my baby back...baby back"
I work the Double Midnight Comics table at Granite State Comicon every year and the "Be Backers" can be annoying, but the one that kills me the most, is the "Mr. Let's pull stacks of comics out like you're about to buy them all then at the last second, you leave a mess and MAYBE buy one comic". 😡.
I have a similar story about my comic collecting uncle (who is originally the person who got me into comics when i was a tot basically). I dont remember the exact issue or anything, but he had a star wars comic about as close to mint as you can get, and he took it to a con that Patrick Stewart was attending to have him autograph it, and Patrick Stewart BENT HIS COMIC!! when he gave it to him to sign lol.
And my uncle is the type of person who doesnt care if it was me or the most famous person on earth to bend his comic, its going to make him salty regardless. I think Pat Stewart really pissed my uncle off that day
Oh man, that stinks, I hear that type of stuff happening from time to time. 😢
I just realized i said a star wars comic, of course i meant a star trek comic*** common mistake for me, all the star crap runs together for me lol.
Hall H being hell on Earth comment waschysterical. Great stuff as always.
This is another great segment, just as enjoyable as the first one.
But I've got an idea-- since you've all been on the purchasing end of a transaction, how about a discussion of the challenges of dealing with the different types of sellers? You know, "The Hoarder"-- who doesn't really want to part with anything, and prices his books accordingly;
"The Show-Off/Bragger"-- who is talking your ear off about what he's had/sold in the past;
"The Comic God-King"-- who brings so many long boxes that you can't possibly go through all of them;
"The Bad Mouther"-- who is constantly whining about how the customers at this-or-that con were "way better" than the ones at the con they are presently attending;
"The Wheeler-Dealer"--who gives great discounts on bundle purchases, but has no idea how to price comics individually;
"The Backstabber"-- who talks bad about other dealers to customers; etc. etc.
There are challenges and funny anecdotes on both ends of the purchase transaction--after all, we're dealing with people here... and people are just funny in general.
It's interesting how bad behavior on the part of either party (buyer or seller) can often foster bad behavior in the other party.
This channel is one of my very favorites-- you folks cover such a wide variety of topics in a FUN and engaging manner... way better than putting up nothing but vids bitching about this or that.
tartanphantom absolutely need to do a video on this. It will hopefully be the next installment to this topic.
tartanphantom i agree with all of that, and YES about the 'bitching videos'. Like, whats the deal with some of these comic guys that literally make videos just to bitch about a comic and nothing else yet they still go out and spend the money on it so they can bitch about in on video and after you see a few of their videos u just want to ask them why in the hell are they even in to comics, because by watching their videos they obviously hate them all.
My anxiety spikes just thinking about the crush of humanity. Thankfully there are UA-cam content creators so I can experience a bit.
Thank you for all the advice it was wonderful advice I've been stuck in a couple of those situations
I feel very distressed when checking out comic books (not high end) because I know I'm taking up the sellers time asking them about this issue or that issue and their pricing but also I want to get like the best deal possible at the con because I want to buy other things. BTW this is mostly my issue sellers in general ime are very patient and nice.
I've only been to Las Vegas comic Con it's a smaller one but I like it. I feel the bigger ones like San Diego are just tourist traps, I think I would try and go to SDCC but I think I can already say...... I like the smaller ones.
Antonio Santiago some of my favorite cons are small hotel shows.
A mature, well poised discussion of a comic book relevant topic that is interesting for those seasoned and brand new to comic-dom. Well done fellas, it's always good to see you three on the mic delivering concise and informative content. Looking forward to more from you three. 👍👍
Bolo One79 thank you so much. Love hearing that we are bringing interesting content. 👍
@@goldenageguru Absolutely Jeff! I got hooked with the Tom/Russ combo, ComicPops aka Fasha videos were always entertaining. And now with the addition of the Golden Age Guru's perspective were getting the length and breadth of Comic book history.
Another great video guys! I'm surprised cons like NYCC or SDCC don't have apps like they do at DragonCon. I guess we're spoiled. One great thing about it is you can create a schedule by adding events to it and it will alert you about your commitments. But definitely big things are comfort, hydrate, be respectful, shower and pre plan your rest spots.
kachoong thanks for sharing that great info of the app.
Interesting bit I think you left out :the pile grabber (come up with a better name if you have one). This person tries to look or swipe books in your pile while your looking other books to add to it,happen mostly around the cheap comics had it happen to me a couple of times, the remedy is keep your pile in front of you,as your done going thru the long box move the pile to the next long box facing front of you , again if somebody swipe a book in front of you do not get mad,try to find another copy hopes this tip helps somebody
One Wolf Gun that is one sneaky and under handed move.
@@goldenageguru again there are people who do this,I had guys take books right off my pile, didn't even know, talk to the same guy he was on my left said that I just found one in box (I shoulda of look thru my pile ) went up and paid for them (again didn't even think about it) got home looked for that book and it wasn't there.....then I remembered that guy to the left of me had one .....put 2+2 together and..... people at cons do that you got to be aware who around you at all times.....
Love these videos but come in man you’re really going to get down on the “be backers?” LOL I used to work at a comic book store and did many many cons. The “be backers” are just human beings trying to be polite and embarrassed they can’t pull the trigger on stuff out of their price range. If you’re actually counting on them to come back to your booth then that’s your hang up c’mon man. Lol it comes with the profession. There’s worse things as there be backer. Keep these great videos coming! I’m happy for you guys that you can make your living selling comics. I wish I had the courage to do what you do. I chickened out and after college I went the corporate route and while I’ve had a great career monetarily I have always wished I could have have stayed in comics which is my passion. Kudos to you guys. I’m not getting on you for your stance on but backers but just trying to remind you there are worse things and to be grateful for all us comic collectors enabling you to have the wonderful profession you have! ❤
Biggest con I went to was Rosecity (actually ran into comicTom and fireguyryan there too) and it was a shock, and there are bigger cons out there. If I did "be back" someone I did go back. But have probably said and didn't go back. But I also know I'm not spending more than $50-60 on a book so I don't waste my time or theirs. I was disappointed that I had a solid list of things I was looking for and really wasn't able to find much. However, I did like meeting big name artists and writers and buying some original pieces from them.
Allen Mazan The top cons in the country are about 5-6 times bigger with attendees and retailers. Check out Emerald City Comic Con if you want a feel of a real big con.
Man its harder now days to find the things you put on your list than it ever has been IMO, and when you do find some of it, its like the least important ones you wanted. And now days every back issue lot has EVERY damn thing pulled out of it leaving basically all crap that should be in 50 cent bins. With the movies and also the way collectors are now, its not just keys that are pulled out already, its almost every minor key, every book that wishes it was a minor key, any book that has any somewhat popular storyline, etc, and then they want close to 10 bucks for every random silver age comic they do have, and theyre just not worth it. And its so stressful now buying back issues when you did it as a kid over 20 yrs ago now cuz some older books that werent considered very good then are way over priced now. For example, a common one i see with stupid high prices now days are like the off beat spidey series like spectacular or web of.
HI AGAIN! 👋
I've learned so much from you guys thanks for all the information
Haven't been to a con in like 15 years but I love hearing behind the scenes/how the sausage is made stories! Keep it up!
Great video boys; this sequel was better than the original! Just promise there won’t be any ewoks in your third instalment!
Another great video! Really cool hearing all the stories and tips for those just getting into the community. So many horror stories though. You guys are braver than the Marines
San Diego heat and sun... it’s beach weather year round lol
I knew from the title what would come up hahaha. At the last con I went to I think a seller thought I was a 'Be Backer'. Genuinely had less cash than I thought and said I'd be back. Came back 20 minutes later and he seemed genuinely surprised I bought the book.
Great job sticking to your word, a common thing I like to do i is ask for a small dollar amount to hold with the book so people feel compelled to come back. I will also hold a book for 30min. It has worked outstanding for me. Sometimes someone will return after 30min but they have always understood that a book can’t be held indefinitely.
That's a great idea and in future I might suggest that myself if they don't. This wasn't a large con and the book wasn't expensive enough to really be able to do that, but definitely in the future!
I remember I was at artist alley and so crowded. One cosplayer started blowing their breath on my face I turned around and scared the crap out of them yelling. “Stop!!!! I’m getting pissed off and I don’t turn green I turn red!!!” I had a small gap of space around me all of a sudden lol
Comics Addiction it’s like one of those moments where you are being patient and hoping the situation will change and you eventually snap because you just can’t take it.
I've never been to one of the big Cons with the movie panels and actors, I live in Charlotte and go to the HeroesCon here in the summer, the great thing about this one is they don't do the actors anymore, which I really like cause its all about the comics and more so about the artists, I had the 3 day pass this past summer and it still wasn't enough time to dig, lol....maybe one year you guys can come here and check it out.
Steamcave22 would love to attend Heores Con. Every year I say I will make it and something comes up. Hopefully this year 🤞.
I watched the first part after it was highly recommended by Chris on 'We Love Comics'. I could totally imagine all the crowd behavior as you guys described it. The "I'll be backers" would be annoying...but the poker thing would drive me nuts! Maybe put a low-grade comic up front as "the poker comic" with a sign that says "3 pokes for a dollar!"?
Douglas McDowell I like the decoy poke book.
sneaking in snacks and drinks are a good idea
Love these tip videos they’re super helpful keep it up guys 🙏🏼
I went to SDCC to buy COMICS dealers started to remember me because I was not weird ( by con standards. we're all weird in a good way) and I bought comics and toys I spent several thousand dollars I had zero time for nonsense in Hall H there were comics to buy.
As far as me ever saying I'll be right back. I always split up my cash through Mark and I. Sometimes I need to find him. Lol. Especially if it's later in the con or the day. But I try not to waste anyone's time if I can't afford a book there's no reason to stand around and stare at it. Just puts another book on my hunt list.
The I'll be back at a con is a loaded element at a big con. Buyer may have found a better deal elsewhere or spent money on something else.
Don't forget to promote good hygiene for all collectors... nothing is worse than talking with the "Dragonbreath" collector or going through books next to the collector who thinks deodorant is optional. If you are old enough to afford collecting, you can take care of yourself, if not for yourself, for the sake of those around you!
Also bring an emergency kit! Band-Aids! I've given to artists and writers alike.
KatRen figures another valid idea from the great community here. 👍
I’m not an expert on huge cons. I like smaller ‘regional’ shows. Seem to find better deals and have room to breathe.
Whenever I go to a show I do a complete walk around before I spend a dime! So when I say I’ll be back 99% of the time I will be back! I’m not going to tie up something with a maybe! I say “I just want to do a complete walk around in case I see something I want more
I depend on the experts for hall. H. enjoy the con, use technology for hall H
Last Comic Con I went to I crossed path with no less than a dozen people with horrible body order. Also made small talk with a guy complimenting my Godzilla hoodie. Nice dude, painful breathe. Personal hygiene isn't that complicated people. Be as lazy as you wish at home, but when sharing public space have courtesy for others, please.
When I get the, "I'll be back" I refer to them as being on the "Be Back Bus".
No way are you just complaining! I don’t collect comics, im a Star Wars modern 3.75 collector but I 100% understand these books are worth a lot of money! Anyone who doesn’t understand that shouldn’t be there!
At Cons and in Comic stores what is the etiquette for negotiating on price? Is it like street corner stands where you should always negotiate or is there a certain price range or type that should be negotiated?
Let's talk about dealers too. Some people are so unapproachable and act like an elitist. If you mention a book or a series they may poo-poo your choice and honestly.. dealers shouldn't have a negative attitude. So many times I have dealt with shitty dealers that treat you like you don't belong there.
My suggestion if you go to COMIC CON, have a good time!
David Urbina short, sweet and poignant.
I'd say those people that DECIDE of their own volition to be BLATANTLY RUDE. No go for sure. 🙄
You NEED to do a video on PANEL ETIQUETTES!! Horror stories of fans asking questions. Don’t ask for selfies. Don’t ask the talents to do something like ie take off their shirt. I’ve witness this and obviously the talent declined. But it’s purely disrespectful. People need to be mindful of their questions it could get so cringy.
Just make sure not to carry all the extra stuff your bringing in a back pack, or you'll make the list.
barbarian_kungfu 🤣.
What your line etiquette at Con?
Do dealers really dislike tire kickers that much? I view it as part of the business. Obviously "negotiating" with a dealer on price with no intention of buying is a bit different. In the video it does make it sound a little like dealers think selling to customers and all the trappings that come with it is a waste of their time.
I don't like to waste dealers time either, but sometimes the book just doesn't strike you and you have to move on. Sometimes you really do need to think about it. Some times deals fall through and maybe the customer just doesn't want to be offensive by coming up with an excuse.
However, I'll never pretend that I want to purchase a book or ask purposefully waste the time of a dealer if I am not interested. Price is often a motivating factor, and I might be pointing out (not being poking) a book to a friend and a dealer might ask if I am interested, but I will just let them know I am looking. I recently had an interaction with a dealer where we were talking about a book and he showed me a copy he had. I would love to get the book, but it was too much and the condition wasn't there, so I wasn't going to purchase, and I was fairly upfront about not being interested, but I feel a little bad that it was wasting the dealers time. I think he was just trying to get a sale. However, the interaction was pleasant and he wasn't particularly busy so I guess its fine.
All these 1st world problems are why I dont go to cons...plus i hate line ups..and quite frankly i would feel like a huge dork being at one. But thats just me. My loss.
I agree...so many people without a pot to.piss in enquiring about books they clearly cant buy.
My biggest pet peave is shops that display there books in a fashion that gets them mangled in few hours..or the shop guy mangles them himself cause hes more into magic cards lol.
I don’t envy you comic sellers! You have tons of books literally, you have books worth huge money! And you have morons who don’t put the value of said comic as seriously as you!
👍
#save1comic 😃👍
bruh why yall so serious lol
Really? Theraphy :/
