I was a 13-year-old girl when this was happening. It would be wonderful if AT&T would go into the computer business again.

I was a senior in high-school when this commercial aired. It was the first time I had ever heard the word "Unix". Little did I know that it would define my future career. I've worked with just about all of the major flavors over the years. I am now a Senior Linux Engineer. Unix has ben good to me.

The company I worked for had AT&T computers in the mid 80's similar to these, I can't remember the model numbers possibly 6300. They had 286, 386 and 486 processors in them depending on the models, and they had green, blue, or red screens. They were all tied into a main frame type with a spool writer so at the end of the day you could download the daily work to a number of magnetic tapes. We've come along way.

The computer in this commercial is an AT&T 6300 which was a DOS machine. They also had a 6300+ that could run DOS or Unix. I had a 6300 for personal use back then. They also made a 7300 AKA the 3B1 AKA the Unix PC - I still have one of those and it still works. It runs "full-blown" Unix System-V, has a DOS card and can actually support multiple users. It's quite an interesting relic.

The AT&T PC 6300 was also meant to run Unix, but not the AT&T-branded one. It was eventually marketed to run Microsoft/SCO's Xenix operating system.

@slugnbozo Naturally, as AT&T developed Unix at Bell Labs back in the early 70's.

Amazing. So in 1984, AT&T actually made a desktop computer that ran UNIX? Was there actually UNIX based productivity software? Was it mainframe style software?

    In response to chailey666
I have also resurrected a 7300 just recently. See mightyframe.blogspot.com/p/at-7300-unix-pc-3b1.html
I feel the same way about this machine as you do. Maybe we could compare notes.
