There is in Moscow Henryk Wieniawski's Violin CONCERTO NO 3 .vanished after its premiere in 1878 .It only needs serendipity to give wings to the Universe again. I strongly believe that against all odds, revolutions & wars including this one that Wieniawski was to important figure for music life in Russia to have his concerto burned even by Stalin or Putin.
As I already said Music Conservatory in Saint Petersburg's system of music education was created by Rubinstein & Wieniawski from scratch. ( Czar closed Warsaw Conservatory in Poland to punish Poles for November Uprising in 1830 ,the same event which Chopin 's parents sucsesfully removed their patriotic son to be involved in by sending Fryderyk on tour.. Unlike Chopin who gradueted from Warsaw Concervatory, Wieniawski had to study in Paris due to czar punishment .Fact that Henryk Wieniawski is cofounder of St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music is rarely pointed out and this why every chance I have i repeat it. It was looking bad for communist. But back then Wieniawski was a pivotal person in Russian music life. He also established there fantastic Violin class With his personal recommendation Leopold Auer was hired as his assistant. Auer was pupil of Joseph Joachim , Joachim was pupil of Serwaczynski who was Wieniawski first violin teacher. Later on this Violin class become beginning of many virtuosos and so called Russian School of Violin Playing .Among them was Jasha Heifetz Rubinstein become composition and piano teacher .One of his students was Peter Tchaikovsky. Today fact that Wieniawski is a cofounder of first musical institution in Russia is rarely mentioned but back than it was a common knoledge . By 1878 strong position of Rubinstein and Wieniawski in St Petersburg was diminished due to their many tours together , not focusing on St Petersburg Conservatory and also due to a very ambitious assistant. It is often that ambitious assistant of some great teacher is trying at some point to claim all glory for her- or him-self using intrigues against benefactor and mentor, like not that long ago DD to IG at Juilliard .When in 1878 Sarasate played in St Petersburg in salon of Prince Konstanty Wieniawski brought Auer with him.When Sarasate finished his performance Prince asked Wieniawski to perform as well. Henryk told him that he came without violin .Prince Konstanty suggested that he will play on Sarasate's Strad and someone from audience will accompany him. Than Auer offered himself as accompanist on the piano since he knew Wieniawski's pieces by heart. In 1878 Peter Tchaikovsky made a ,,political'' mistake to dedicate his concerto not to Auer but to Kotek who nota bene helped Peter in writing violin part. Kotek was a violinist and pupil of Joseph Joachim like Auer himself but younger & without position. What made all situation worse were rumors about Peter & Josif romantic liaison. . Even Nadiezda von Meck influence and money could not help to change this situation. Auer took it as affront to be omitted at first dedication and when was asked to premiere it in Russia he said NO since it was in his opinion unplayable. Well than Brodsky came and he premiered it in 1881 but not in Russia but Vienna. Peter Tchaikovsky to have his concerto played in Russia finally dedicated it to Leopold Auer who made small adjustments and now it was good enough to play by L. Auer and his students. (ha ha ) Later In New York Leopold Auer apologized to Tchaikovsky.
In 1878 Wieniawski premiered in Moscow under button of Anton Rubinstein his Violin Concerto No.3 in A minor. He was already sick. His Russian agent used his sickness and stole his money living virtuoso without a ruble. Wieniawski's wife and children were in Brussels. Proud Wieniawski did not ask for help his friends and landed in Maryjski Hospital for Poor. When Anton Rubinstein found him he moved him to Nadjezda von Meck Residence on Razdwanski Boulvard . But it was too late. Wieniawski died there on March 31 1880 just15 months after premiere of his Violin Concerto No 3 ..
