Go through Hai Van Tunnel - The longest mountain tunnel in Vietnam on National Highway 1A | Daily Life TF
In the heart of the Hai Van mountain range, there is a magnificent transportation project - the Hai Van road tunnel, this is the longest road tunnel in Vietnam and goes through two specific climate zones, South and North.
Before the Hai Van tunnel was built, traffic on the North-South route through the Central region had to follow the 22km long Hai Van pass, taking more than 1 hour with a high level of danger.
Now going through Hai Van tunnel only takes 10 to 15 minutes on a tunnel length of more than 12 km.
Hai Van Pass is a mountain range in the Truong Son range, a natural boundary between Thua Thien-Hue province in the North and Da Nang city in the South.
This is the most dangerous pass among the passes in Vietnam.
Hai Van road tunnel was started on August 27, 2000 and inaugurated on June 5, 2005.
The main tunnel is 6.2 km long with a width of 10m for 2 lanes. The rescue tunnel runs parallel to the main tunnel as an escape route for people and vehicles when an incident occurs.
On February 25, 2017, Hai Van tunnel was started to expand the refuge tunnel into a second tunnel to help reduce the traffic density on the currently overloaded Hai Van tunnel.
Hai Van 2 tunnel project was inaugurated on January 11, 2021 after more than 3 years of construction.
From this point on, vehicles moving through Hai Van tunnel will circulate one way per tunnel tube, contributing to ensuring traffic safety between Thua Thien - Hue and Da Nang.
