Going from a Dolby Atmos layout to Auro-3D: • Using an AURO-3D Layou...
In this demonstration using binaural mics from Sonic Presence, I am comparing the sound from a native Dolby Atmos demo with Atmos decoding vs. using the same demo with Auro-3D up mixing. The speaker layout I have is for an Auro-3D setup using front and rear height speakers, but I find that it works well for Auro-3D, Atmos, and DTS-X content.
Playing Auro-3D content on my previous setup with ceiling-mounted speakers sounded good only with Atmos, but not very good with the Auro-3D up mixer. Keep in mind that the Auro-3D up mixer isn't utilizing my rear surrounds, whereas the Atmos one is. This is a limitation of this Denon X4700H.

I love my auro 3d 11.1 configuration, try to connect the voice of god and transmit native audio auro 3d, a shame that auro 3d is dying.
@@antonioantequeracid6005 I upmix everything so no shortage of content for me. Native Auro is not really a thing here in the US
Could you clarify why the rear height speakers are not working with Auro-3D? I have X4500H and looking at the manual it supports a layout with front and rear height speakers. I only have 2 (non height) surround speakers in my setup though. I have not tried adding rear height speakers yet, but I have been thinking about it. I would assume it works.
@@kotolows I'm not sure if it helps, but my X4700H cannot do rear surround and heights at the same time if I'm using the voice of god channel. It's because it only processes 11 channels. I'm not sure which speaker configuration you are using, but rear heights should work in Auro on the X4500H if I'm not mistaken.
The video is no longer available to watch. Has it been uploaded under a different link?
I was looking around on youtube for a decent binaural demo of a setup with height speakers in general as I have been contemplating adding them to my setup. Thank you for this video!
Glad I could help!
Mr. Joe n tell sir I owe you a big thank you! I have two of the cheep Polk subs and I watched the older video where you built your sub so I ordered up the same amp plate and sub speakers and put them in the polk psw10 boxes and man am I happy! And I didnt have to build anything.
The Dolby Atmos is pretty good in some of the test samples, but overall the AURO 3D wins the day. Nice demo Joe.
I totally understand why you prefere Aura 3D, it is fuller, more detailed and more natural sounding. That just became a demand for my next avr 🙊
The bass sounds deeper in Auro-3D.
I hear that as well. Definitely louder.
@@joentell I felt like I could hear that in your demo as well. I personally have A/B'd a movie scene before using REW RTA and gotten the exact same bass response going from Atmos to Auro3D though. maybe a few more tests would be good to try using this method when you have time.
@@snootz I think it's scene dependent. I'm not sure how Auro-3D decides when to "enhance" the bass, but it's more obvious on certain tracks.
Based on my headphone, I prefer the Auro 3D. Sounds more crisp and engaging.
The Auro-3D speaker placement is a definite step up. There's also now updates to Auro-3D depending on your receiver for speaker configurations. I know at least for the HTP-1, If you have the full compliment of Auro-3D minus the VOG and Front Center Height channel, the HTP-1 will map a phantom VOG and Front Center Height using the 4-6 Height channels you have setup.
I saw this video with a pair of IEMs and I found Dolby Atmos sounding a little bit muddy.
Can you review Cerwin Vega SL-15?
Joe N Tell fire 🔥 video as always. Auro3d has been my go to since putting together my home theater. My question would be what sensitivity do you use? Which is best? Currently I'm at Medium and level 13. I'm using a marantz sr7013.
Medium and 10 which is the default from Auro.
Well, how does one use auro? Where do you get the content, what hardware supports it, what software changes or options you need to change?
People talk about upgrade... How?
I noticed that on my Denon that with Dolby it doesn't activate my center high or my top surround speaker but Auro does, is that normal?
That is normal. If you have a Voice of God speaker, only Auro-3D will activate that.
Got my Denon 4700h a few days ago and been playing with the settings , at first Auro 3D just seemed superior . How ever after various testings the placement is better with Atmos . I don't know where to get a native Auro 3D demo but using the auromatic upmixer on Dolby Atmos films messes the placement . However it does sound crisp and more bass .
I do use an auto 3D layout for Atmos . Work great .
It depends on where you have your height speakers. They should not be closer to you than your main speakers
Joe what's your auro 3d setting you use in your denon x4700h?
Default. Medium, Level 10, Cinema EQ off
I am SOLD Auro 3D will be my next upgrade :)
0:21 is thst an Ohm FRS 15 standing there?
Larsen 4.2
Hey joe I set up my heights for auro 3d at a 30 degree angle from listening position, the sweet spot is higher then my ear when standing up, is that to high?
I think you'll be alright. Wilfried from Auro says it doesn't have to be exact.
@@joentell also I have the front heights above the front L and R and atmos speakers above head, my question is this is a atmos 5.2.2 set up and also a 9.2 auro set up, will it work? Atmos speaker will be rear heights when in auro, is that going to sound good?
@@nomorepictures7673 it should reroute front heights to to the front not rear when using Auro
@@joentell I mean if I already have the front heights and two above head speakers, what should I set them as ? The front heights I’m going to set to front heights and atmos to rear heights?
@@nomorepictures7673 that's the issue. Atmos height channels won't sound right when using ceiling speakers. Wilfried talks about how when speakers are much higher than 30 degrees above the ear level speakers they all kind of blend into just a mono-ish channel. Left/right or front/back separation is a lot less than if you used actual rear heights or side heights at an angle closer to 30 degrees above.
A similar thing happens if you move your left and right speakers too far apart, you lose the phantom center image right? Too close and it breaks the center image, and too far breaks it as well. Wilfried argues that Atmos makes the ear level and heights too spread apart and it breaks any cohesion they might otherwise have.
I woul probably opt NOT to use the ceiling speakers if you want to use Auro because stuff that is supposed to come from above and the back or above and to the sides will only come from what you perceive is just above. Perhaps consider using them as a Voice of God channel maybe.
I experienced a bit more spacious feel with the Auro-3D.
I hear auro-3D is better then atmos and DTSX is better then atmos is that true?? I find it wired if that’s the case
I don't know about better. Maybe it's personal preference more than anything.
@@joentell yeah cause I always hear a lotta people saying auro 3D has better height separation and better use of the height channels. But most avrs just come with DTSX and dolby atmos as Standard. I see some AVRs in Canada with auro3d Technology but there’s not enough content for it.
@@Lowkey_nxthxn We've made many videos about it on the @dailyhifi channel. As you hear from this demo, Auro-3D also sounds good with native Dolby Atmos content. Of course native Auro-3D would be even better, but I upmix all my content including 2-channel audio.
@@joentell and I also think atmos on Denon sounds better then the onkyo or Yamaha AVR. I feel way more immerse and it sounds like Denon actually uses the height channels a lot more then onkyo and Yamaha that’s just my perspective from what I’m hearing on my Denon cause I never really was happy with how the atmos sounded on the onkyo I felt like I was Missing to much information
@@Lowkey_nxthxn that might have more to do with their room correction software than the Atmos decoder.
Hi Joe. I have a issue with Auro 3D upmixer. I have a x4400h. When I upmix Auro3D the sound that should be only on the overhead speakers, it's also present on the center channel. Is that normal? For example a train over my head is also sounding in the center, so I think it doesn't sound good
Do you have ceiling mounted speakers or height speakers on the side walls?
@@joentell heights speakers. 30 degree angle as Auro says
@@uzcateguipedromiguel I think Auro-3D uses all the channels to create the effect. Perhaps, your center channel is turned up a bit high and it might be messing with the effect?
@@joentell maybe... Or maybe the Auro 3d effect is too high as well. I got it set to 14
@@uzcateguipedromiguel yes, perhaps. The default is Medium room size and level 10. From my understanding, those settings are not from Auro, but rather something the AVR manufacturers implement to differentiate their product from others.
But this is NOT really a Dolby Atmos vs. AURO-3D but rather Dolby Atmos vs. AURO-3D UP-MIXER, isn`t it? You took and Atmos file and up-mixed with AURO-3D UP-MIXER or am I wrong? I mean ... a more accurate test would be if you have the same content originally encoded in ATMOS and originally encoded in AURO-3D! not up-mixed...or, if you want to test upmixers you should do a AURO-3D UP-MIXER vs. Dsur vs. Neural:X.
You are right. I prefer the upmixed Auro-3D to the native Atmos. The native Auro-3D is better still.
Starting off, if the Binaural Sound Comparison is true thru my headphones, Auro-3D wins.
The sound is more full or not as thin with the Dolby portion of the demo.
One thing that sticks out for me is, you changed your set-up to Auro-3D spec, correct? It leads me to believe it has an advantage. I'm currently looking at a document Wilfred talked about where it blends the two speaker layouts. If I could position the height speakers in one spot, cool. If I need to move them based on content, I'm going to work on that.
Also just watched the Tractor demo. The overhead plane takeout was so real.
I made a video with my system using the Dolby layout also. Atmos sounds good on an Atmos layout, but Auro and DTSX do not.
@@joentell That's what I'm thinking of working on. A speaker mounting system that will move the speakers based on content. Unless the Auro-3D layout + Auromatic is a one for all set up.
@@mikeortiz2139 the setup guide I linked to in this video is literally called the One for All Setup Guide.😊. ua-cam.com/video/_uoEV8XQWWQ/v-deo.html
Sounds the same
... Nice... The source sound was the best
AURO-3D sir
Auro-3D is superior BY FAR. No comparison
I can’t tell thru my AirPods
The difference in bass should be perceivable. I can tell even on my AirPods Pro.
based on my headphones - auro3d is punchier and louder. atomos is soft and clear.
✨AURO 3D IS BETTER EXPERIENCE ✨
Auro 3D just sounds cleaner the atmos
i found atmos sound to be right over me while auro give me a more spacious feeling
Same experience I have when in-person. Interesting that it came through in this recording
Joe I definitely like the Auro 3D sound over Atmos, but regarding the creator's intent when mixing for Atmos sound, which format is more faithful to an atmosphere sound? Is Atmos more accurate in placing objects where they should be or is Auro 3D giving a more real life sound sensation (just as if you were listening the sound in the place where is coming from? Please forgive me if I'm not expressing my idea adequately.
@@J.R.Hernandez73 I put the source video so you can judge which tonality sound most similar to the original on my system. I have my system tuned to the NAD Target, similar to the Harman Target Curve. The sound depends on your system/room tuning. It's a bit beyond the scope of this video, but if something is mixed in Atmos, you expect it to sound best on an Atmos layout. But different mixers have their Atmos speakers placed on ceiling and some on wall as heights. You don't know which one is closer to their intent. But, generally speaking, Atmos on an Atmos layout is likely more accurate to the director's intent. What I've noticed is that a lot of mixers didn't spend too much time on the Atmos mix and in those cases, I prefer an Auro upmix
Dolby sounds neutral, Auro sounds V shaped... LMFAO!
Maybe. I do hear a bit of a change in tonality. Maybe I'll do some measurements to see. It definitely does a lot of spatial stuff too.
Dolby wins
Bass is deep in Dolby Atmos
Another $10
Maybe I just root for the underdog. Who knows? Whenever I get a chance to talk Auro-3D AND binaural, you know it's a go!
@@joentell ... Supporting a balanced and wide variety of options opposed to a forced monopoly of any particular choice is always worth pursuing... and why I show up to reinforce the algorithm. 🙏
What a joker. Look at you bright white room and seating position it speaks for yourself. And placing equipments at front? Are you doing HiFi or AV. The simple thing is when you upmix to auro, it basically lose all the metadata from Atmos and just guessing what channels to play what.
I'm not sure if you're joking or what. I just moved here not long ago. This isn't even permanent. But hey, keep hatin'. 😉
