Why is there 2 air inlets per cylinder on this engine? 12 in total. Or am I missing something?

Four valve per cylinder 2 intake 2 exhaust

Each intake valve has a dedicated plenum. What people call swirl flaps are actually butterfly valves that can effectively turn off the airflow through one of the intake valves forcing all the air through the other valve. The engineers use this as a way to increase the velocity of the air entering the cylinder under all but heavy load conditions when full air flow is needed. Increasing air velocity as it enters the cylinder allows more turbulence as the piston rises on the compression stroke. More turbulence = better fuel mixing when the injector fires. Better fuel mixing = more efficient combustion.

Hi, I noticed there are walnut shells around the camshafts. Have you had any problems, i.e., causing any internal damage to the engine . I know it's fine if it finds its way into the cylinder, but I'm not sure what would happen with the oil. ?

What state are you in, and whats the cost on a carbon clean like this including EGR/ Throttle body

What can you use instead of walnut shells? Can you use sawdust or pine nut shells? In my area we don't have ground walnut shells. Thanks for input.

Who is the person that sells those intake adapters on eBay? Your videos have been super helpful!

Great video--do you advise cleaning or replacing the intake manifold on a 2013 x5 35d with 90k ? Some comment that with age heat weakens the plastic and pieces of the swirl flaps can break off and damage the engine-Thanks

Love the detailed video man… tried to jump the starter. Put one wire on the power signal on my solenoid and one wire on the jumper to the starter. Got the starter to turn over but didn’t engage to turn my cam shafts over. Any suggestions?

What kind of oil? where did they get their fuel?

Thanks for posting the video. What I was wondering is if you actually noticed any difference from cleaning the intake ports and manifold? I tried cleaning out the intake elbow and the amount of sticky soft carbon I had was too much for me to deal with. I gave up and put the thing back together.

Also I was going to say that I actually noticed the car compensating for the gunk by turning up the boost pressure. Probably some BMW engineers thought it would be a good idea to mask the carbon problem.

I took my F10 3.0 to the local shop where they do non-invasive decarbonization for diesels.
They use a special machine for it, a hose goes into the air intake past the filter and uses some kind of aerosol detergent that's not harmful to the cylinder lining. The car runs on idle for about an hour like that, with intermitent increases in revs.
After the procedure is done it's supposed to have 'washed off' any carbon build up which then goes down the exhaust manifold and into the exhaust as an almost black liquid.
Not sure how effective it would be in this example because there's just too much of it but I'm hoping with regular decarbonizations I can prevent this scenario from ever happening.

Not sure how the name of the city will help as it's probably nowhere near any of you guys, but it's Trzin near Ljubljana (Slovenia).

Thank you for this! This is the only video that mentions how to tell if your valves are closed and how to turn it over by hand. How much do you think deleting all the emissions equipment would help with preventing carbon build up?
