Ginger Rogers had wanted that role in The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex. She hoped to do more dramatic roles as working in musicals was very strenuous. I saw some incredible screen tests exists that she had made for the role. It would have been a classic, except that RKO wanted to pigeon hole the star. I think I saw this in The RKO Story, it might have been TCM.
Glenda Jackson just wow. What a force of nature. Love Cate Blanchetts portrayal, she did so good. Bette Davis did amazing too, so dramatic and feisty. Her transformation in costume and makeup is mind blowing. All three did so good, they each had two outings as Elizabeth.
Glenda Jackson really captures the spirit of Elizabeth, you can tell that she is commanding and truly has a heart and stomach of an English king. Not to mention the way that the makeup sits on her face, it’s not pretty but that just adds to the realism of it, especially as Elizabeth aged.
Cate Blanchett's acting is great but the script is comical and cringeworthy, Helen Mirren steals the screen and Glenda Jackson transforms into Elizabeth. Also Elizabeth was only 8 when she met Catherine Howard. Why is she a teenager in the Tudors?
Love them all. Glenda Jackson and Bette Davis, the best. Cate Blanchett always amazing not to mention stunning. The Dames Judi Dench (who won an Oscar for her performance in Shakespeare in Love) and Helen Mirren (only actress to play both Elizabeths) perfection. I'm not referring to the truthfulness of the story just their acting. Love them all. Thank you for this.
I'll choose Florence from the black and white because that was the first time she was protested as an actual middle aged woman in a film about her golden age and the costume was spot on . Also that one one the dress from her rainbow portrait - and of course Anne of the houdand days because little Elizabeth was really cute and Cate Blanchett (obviously)
Glenda Jackson hands down. Her nuanced performance really captured Elizabeth's mercurial, enigmatic and often exasperating nature. And she really had a grasp of the political realities and dangers of being an unmarried, childless woman in that world. Stupendous.
1.) Glenda Jackson. 2.) Dame Helen Mirren. 3.) Cate Blanchett. 4.) Dame Judi Dench. Those have always been my top four Queen Elizabeth I's in film, but there are other wonderful actresses who have played the queen that I enjoyed. Anne-Marie Duff is another favorite, as is Laoirse Murray. She had SO much potential to play an adolescent-to-queen Elizabeth I in a mini-series, if they went for it.
@@cmm5542 I know! I fell in love with Larry's work at 18 after having to do Wuthering Heights for my A Level English in the UK and haven't looked back since. I'm actress (though not well known) and have writen 2 plays put on by my friend's theatre company :)
@@grandduchesssh2406 Congratulations on your hard work! I perform in amateur theatre, and in my university days dreamed of making it my career, so I know how much work it is to be an actress even without being famous - yet, I am sure you will make it 🙂. Laurence Olivier is one of the most incredible actors. My favourite role of his was probably in Rebecca, but to my shame I must confess I have not yet seen his Wuthering Heights. I have seen a later version with Timothy Dalton but have not been able to find the full B&W version. I'm sure I could buy a DVD on Amazon, but I avoid that when possible 😄. I get a lot of shocked criticism from fellow Jane Austen fans for my preference for the 1940 Pride and Prejudice - I really don't care if the costumes are wrong and they changed some of the dialogue/plot points, the acting is just so good.
Anne Marie Duff is my favourite Elizabeth. I’m sure Glenda Jackson and Helen Mirren are more accurate to the real Elizabeth. But I found Duff more relatable as a character while still being true to Elizabeth. Also I think she delivers the best version of the Tilbury Speech.
actually Anne Marie Duff plays everything on historical facts the series had very much done their homework as far as sticking to historical facts as much as possible
I adored Anne Marie-Duff in the last episode. But Helen Mirren's Tilbury gets it for me without doubt. In fact I think Helen Mirren's Elizabeth was so beautifully written, I just wish I could forget it was Helen Mirren while I was watching her
This is great! Just wanted to say that there are 2 more movies with her aside from these (and probably more that i don't know about): Orlando (1992) where she is played by a man for some reason Anonymous (2011) where she is played by Joely Richardson and Vanessa Redgrave
Given the prevalence of the Bisley Boy conspiracy pushed by Bram Stoker and others, her being portrayed by Quentin Crisp in Orlando is actually quite a fun twist.
Oh My!!!! You omitted the great FLORA ROBSON as QE1 in “FIRE OVER ENGLAND” (1937) w/ Lawrence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, James Mason... Flora Robson is the embodiment of QE1 and holds court with a mighty and loving grip!! A MUST SEE... (Free on UA-cam)
What, no mention of Flora Robson? "Fire Over England" and at least one other performance (I think with Errol Flynn, the title escapes me)? Not lengthy roles but she projected a lot of character.
I'd like to see a compilation of the various actors portraying Robert Dudley. I never forgave the casting of Robert Hardy as Dudley in "Elizabeth R," at least as a young Dudley. Joseph Fiennes was "fine" opposite Cate Blanchett, but the first movie with her as Elizabeth insulted and disparaged Dudley's reputation and he wasn't even in the second one. Two of my favorites as Dudley are Tom Hardy.and Daniel Massey (in Mary, Queen of Scots, 1971). Jeremy Irons was delicious as an older Dudley, opposite Helen Mirren, but I don't think the original looked that good at that age. As to Elizabeth, my favorites are Glenda Jackson, particularly in the movie, Mary, Queen of Scots (1971) and Helen Mirren. Cate Blanchett does a great job, too, but major parts of the movies made me cringe.
And Fire Over England (1937) That Has Flora Robson Playing As Queen Elizabeth I In A Supporting Role As Queen Elizabeth I It's A American Film About A Young Boy In Queen Elizabeth It's Court And The Ship Of Queen Elizabeth I Is Missing And The Father Of The Young Boy Are Missing Too.
Absolutely astonished that you missed Dame Flora Robson, who in the 30s and 40s really monopolized portrayals of Elizabeth I, especially in Britain in films like "Fire over England" and "The Sea Hawk". Here's a clip from "FoE" of Elizabeth giving the Spanish Ambassador what for: ua-cam.com/video/inQhCimpDHY/v-deo.html

wot! No Flora Robson?
She was the “Golden Heir” her father always wanted but never knew he had.
The irony.
Glenda Jackson and cate Blanchette
I love Judi Dench as Elizabeth. But then again, she's a fantastic actress and a thespian.
I'm starting to not like judith dench. She's choosing these shit woke roles. Which is disappointing.
Cate Blanchett obviously is the best 🌟

2022?
Glenda Jackson was Elizabeth R! Just like Peter OToole was Henry ll!
5:36: Helen Mirren you don’t want. That is before James Cayce he would smack you dead.
How about Bill in 2015?
1:43: This one was a paper doll. Pretty frightening. Jerk grandchildren throughout the ages 🤔

Emotional impact.
But The Tudors messed with the ages of other characters as well, including Henry VIII himself.
Agree with everything you said!

Glenda jackson and cate blanchett as Elizabeth

She was a magnificent queen . Her father would have been so proud and of course her mother !!
And she had a high intelligence .
Her father would have his jaw on the ground
Her father would be jealous the spiteful old cow. She is her mother’s victory
Nobody could touch Glenda Jackson in "Elizabeth R".
1.) Glenda Jackson.
2.) Dame Helen Mirren.
3.) Cate Blanchett.
4.) Dame Judi Dench.

Judy dench and Kate are great butt i liked anne marie duff's version of it because of how hot tempered it was and boy was Elizabeth hot tempered.
Yup, she raged with the best of them.
Played it back at 0.75X
Boy, if Elizabeth looked like Jean Simmons, she would have been a real prize for the Kings of Europe.
Cate Blanchett, Glenda Jackson, Helen Mirren, Judi Dench and Anne-Marie Duff. These five are untouchable.
Cate Blanchett, Glenda Jackson, Margot Robbie, and Judi Dench did the best job at trying to imitate the late Elizabeth I Tudor

Anne-Marie Duff and Helen Mirren were my favorite versions of Elizabeth I. They were absolutely brilliant.
So Glenda Jackson, Betty Davis and Cate Blanchett played her twice? (I did not know about Jackson. However, they seems to have forgot Davis?)
