  • First trials using CHDK with my Canon IXUS 220 HS (aka Powershot ELPH 300 HS, aka IXY DIGITAL 410F). I've shoot some time-lapses using the script "sunset4". Thanks to using Apex*96 measurements (accuracy 1/96 stop), the day to night transitions are very smooth and no deflickering was used. Please read the exposure data in the lower-right corner. I've not cropped the frames to show the full field of the 24 mm lens, format 4:3.

    SX220 is a "powershot" while instead this is an "ixus". If you live in US, the commercial name of my model is ELPH 300 HS, as you can read in the caption here above.

    This video was shot using jpg files and only after a video was composed. For videos I use MP4 or AVI containers with h264 encoding.

    I don't remember perfectly, but I've used a small software that analyzed a JPG shot. You can find more info on the chdk page of this camera model. Look for ACID or CameraVersion.

    I assume that when running this and all scripts that account for exposure, you need to turn on 'Override camera settings' in CHDK, correct?

    Thanks! I've used Faststone, a free software.

    what's are the features of chdk on the ixus? time lapse is the only or there is something more? thanks, marco
    I had bought in these days the ixus

  • @loreastro

    The chdk features on ixus are so many that it is impossible to state them here. Yust a few: manual exposure time, manual iso setting (both also outside the standard range), manual focus, raw file, selection of dark frame subtraction, video without time limits, ...
    Read the chdk website!

    How did you do and which of CHDK menu timelapse made me leave the fold ?

  • @loreastro
    @loreastro  12 років тому

    I don't think there is a camera mode in chdk. I've used a script run by internal firmware.

  • @Bash2ok
    @Bash2ok 12 років тому

    I have the script but how do I use it? When I do that, it just records a normal video. If i press the shutter button, it says it starts but then I need to press it again for it to really start. It takes a couple of pictures every 5 seconds (based on the settings I put) but I don't know how to stop it. When I do end up interrupting it or something, It is not in a video like yours but its just a bunch of images. What do I do to make them all into a video?

    I'm considering buying an elph 300 just to mod it with chdk for timelapses, to complement my rebel. is it relatively easy to install chdk and add the scripts for time lapses/day to night transitions, etc? your awesome video sure makes it seem easy!

  • @MrBusfreakinnsbruck
    @MrBusfreakinnsbruck 11 років тому

    chdk sounds really good. but for me its just to much, i think. (i'm a bit of a noob)
    What can you say about the handling with chdk? And another question: the chdk install on the sd card, right? So is there anything important to mention? Or can you destroy your camera with chdk? Thanks for your reply. :)

  • @loreastro
    @loreastro  12 років тому

    Installing chdk was not difficult, even for a newby like me. But please read carefully all the instructions of the website because it's not easy to understand the logic behind all those parameters.
    Using scripts is quite easy, you can find them online.

    yea, much like a dslr, but due to the lack of many buttons and rings they are not easy to set tike in a reflex. Some functions are even better then reflex!

    Probably a bit off subject but is the canon ixus 220HS good at taking photos of the night sky/stars and if so what is the best setting to capture this? Your timelapse seems to show the night sky in gorgeous detail.

    Hi Dave, I don't remember to have set that parameter, maybe it is set by default?

    How did you accomplish the moving shots? Did you use a Dolly?

  • @loreastro
    @loreastro  12 років тому

    absolutely not OT, I'm really interested in night sky photography. I've made also some other tests in dark locations on the mountains and the results are very good, even if not at the level of a DSLR.
    Settings: with CHDK use fixed exposure and ISO, if the sky is not polluted try 32 s and 1200 ISO (true value); fixed focus at 65001; auto dark frame.

    Very nice results. Looking to get the same camera and do TL myself (my A4000 IS doesn't do low light well). You use RAW or jpg?

    • @loreastro
      @loreastro  10 років тому +1

      I've always used jpg because raw is not very good in this small camera. On the other site, with DSLR I always use raw.

    Hi, this is a great video, and beautiful performance from the camera. Can you tell me if the dolly stops the camera for each shot, or it is moving continuously? If so, then what speed was it moving at? Thank you.

    • @loreastro
      @loreastro  7 років тому

      Hi Muddy, the dolly was moving continuously at constant speed. I don't remember exactly, but it was about 80 cm in 30 to 60 min.

    Complimenti veramente! Gran belle riprese considerando che si tratta di una compatta! Ho anche io la 220 HS e dopo aver visto questo video credo proprio che eseguirò il CHDK proprio come ho già fatto sulla 350D! Complimenti anche per lo slider! Spettacolo! Ma è motorizzato? Dove posso trovare buoni consigli e guide per realizzarne uno simile? Grazie! PS: ma sei un membro del TLI?

    • @loreastro
      @loreastro  10 років тому

      Grazie Giuseppe! La 220hs è una bella compatta e col chdk ci si tira fuori persino una discreta via lattea (vedi Alpine Sky - night and day time lapses from Colle dell'Agnello 2012 ).
      Il dolly è autocostruito e motorizzato, ma è un incubo farlo funzionare bene. Se hai due soldi, prendilo già fatto. Se proprio vuoi provarci, allora chiedi su TLI (ci sono!) e sicuramente avrai ottimi consigli.

    Great Job! How did you get the time and exposure details on the images?

  • @loreastro
    @loreastro  12 років тому

    You have to carefully read all the long instructions on the chdk website. You are surely missing something I cannot understand from your description.
    Anyway, the result is a sequence of images you'll have to join in a video using a software like virtualdub.

    You have a link for building that DIY dolly?

    • @loreastro
      @loreastro  10 років тому +1

      Unfortunately I've no DIY guide. It was a continuous improvement over the original design, and moreover a nightmare to make it work correctly. I would not advise anybody to build.

    • @ELPistoffo
      @ELPistoffo 10 років тому

      LOL, I came up with my own build in my head as well but I think I'll take your advice and buy one though I will add a simple motor drive myself.

      Marcelo Schulz So when you take the Sd Card you will the camera have its original FW?

    • @marceloschulzzip
      @marceloschulzzip 8 років тому

      The original FR not change or not will affected, the camera only take the CHDK from the card. When you format the SD, all camera fuctions become as new.

  • @loreastro
    @loreastro  11 років тому

    CHDK is great but less intuitive than the standard sw. You need to study the online instructions and practicize. Simply google chdk and read.
    I think it is difficult to destroy the camera with chdk, but it is not to be excluded.
