I too have had Opinels for years , since 1970's , acier 7 and 9 . Retired to France recently bought a stainless 6. All are superb , they are a design item and very functional . Chosen by the Victorian museum as one of the 100 best designs in the world. I'm over 80 years and carry the 6:with me , it is so cheap it is no loss , 10 Euros , and is truly superb. Oh , and none of my collection of knives is as sharp. Mercie Monsieur !
I have been using Opinels for years. I’ve had tactical style, but I just like simple, inexpensive Opinels. They are unique and get noticed. Big difference is that no security or police types can mistake them for switchblades or gravity knives. I’ve even had them go through magnetometers. My first was a #8, but went to a #6for everyday carry. All have been carbon steel.
I have 3 of these knives the 8 in stainless and the 9 and 10 in carbon steel they are most impressive. I've found that the 9 fits my hand the best. I love the thinness of the blades which lends itself for kitchen duty an absolute pleasure.Thankyou Opinel for creating such a wonderful knife !
I have a carbon no 8 for a few years . Yes it can throw some sparks off a ferro rod. Every one should own at least one . It so light you forget it is your pocket. They can be modded too. I drill a hole down mine and put a mini ferro rod in it . Drill a hole for a lanard to hold it in place and to clip it on my belt so i cant loose it lol. Great vid thanks.
That demonstrates "razor" sharp. First rod strike fire 👍👍! A nice full work-out on two great knives, and a well-done video taking them through their paces. Thanks for another Walker!
Truth be told I kinda lucked out with that dang nice Yellow Birch bark. So fluffy and hydrocarbon rich right off the tree! :) On a side note watched your video on the Sony A6500 dunk. Waiting for Sony to upgrade that or the A7 III.
Got out fishing today. 1 largemouth bass on a topwater 👍🏻. Opinel are EXCELLENT tools. Try gun bluing on the blade. The Brie is excellent just as is. My # 12 is the BEST kitchen knife I’ve ever owned. Fold it, throw it in the drawer (after properly dried) and it’s ready for next time and no surprises when you reach into the drawer next time. 1095 is excellent. You can cook with brie, cooked mushrooms with brie are crazy good. Great video again Walker. The bass was about a pound and went back home unharmed 🎣
I have not caught a bass in over a year. I used to be all about that. Chased them in my kayak. I actually prefer small mouth as they really jump and can catch um under a large dam. Oh that's it. Next week I am going!
I’ve probably mentioned this before on one of your past videos, but I have two number eights, a 12, and a number 12 saw. One of the number eights has the rounded nose. The number 12 knife is a beast. Great knives. I keep my Opinel knives in my French military mess kit.
Carbon can be made super sharp, stainless is convenient. I oil the inside of the knife slot to reduce any swelling that might occur. Remarkably good value (especially if one lives on mainland Europe tad more expensive in UK) which is a rarity these days. For my 60th I treated myself to an ebony handled/ polished blade No8 engraved with my name, Its a beautiful knife.
I am French and I really like Opinel knives. Let yourself be tempted by the garden n ° 8 by opinel, you will be surprised. 12c27 stainless steel from Morakniv. Atypical design for an Opinel. 100% French manufacturing. For less than 15 €, it's a shame to ignore it.
I totally get sucked in to feeling like I’m right there with you. Your camera work is great. Since I lived in upstate NY for 32 years, it is nice to see the scenery. What is the name of the stream that you showed? I have the Opinel #8 in stainless. It is great for food prep and fire-craft. I appreciate all the hard work that you put into your videos. God bless you. John
Yup, the Opinels are nice. Cheap but usefull. I have more than one and love them all. But one little tip. Sand the handle for a nice fit and "fry" the handle in oil. Like your beloved bacon. No more problems with the opening. Look for "modding Opinels" Greetings from over the pond.
But of course! Good food. I have a carbon number 8, about 2 years old, it has the locking mechanism like your 9. I carry the 8 all the time. Great video, thanks.
Hello, you can eat the Brie cheese with a glass of red wine, Perrier is not the best choice, and please remove the plastic before cut Brie cheese 😂 You can also make a frie brie (with breadcrumbs) or eat it with grilled toasts and a salad. Also you can make a croque monsieur with this cheese. 😋 👏 You did the perfect french picnic. Thank you for this video. Hi from France
I just got the Opinel no.8 stainless because the only things that I will be using it for is some form of food prep, whether its taking it apple picking, on a picnic, to the vegetable stand or just prepping lemons, limes & fruit for mixed drinks...ok mostly that...lol but I wanted the SS blade because of the citrus acids and moisture the blade will come in contact with. Im sure it would make a very nice pocket EDC, but I have way to many pocket knives that are better made for such things and I dont care to have a pocket knife sitting on the bottom of my pocket with no clip. I will get a sheath for it for when I leave the house and have it with me. I do like that you can use a ferro rod on the spine of the blade, even my Mora companion wont do that. I really just wanted to add the Opinel to my pocket knife collection and having a useful purpose justifies the expense even though it wasn't expensive....always nice! so far I really like this Opinel #8.
A. First and B. Great review. Starting a fire and preparing food and doing odd jobs are exactly what these knives are designed for. And I think they do a great job. I enjoyed the French style feast, very appropriate, I'm not a fan of bubbly water either. Love Brie though (you did cut the wax of it didn't you). Thanks Walker.
Opinel knives are outstanding! I got a lot of them. Yes, they need some care. But you can edit these knives excellent, modify and produce to your own taste. In addition, the Virobloc is a really good concept. And the price is also convincing.
I found 3 great tent sites for winter hot tenting. All three are close to water sources and all are close to parking areas at AT trail heads. Can't wait for the cold weather.
Another great video.. yes always good to see kids doing anything besides playing video games... What perfect timing too! Purchased my first Opinel this week, a #8 stainless steel.. (and yes, all the new models that come with a lock have the single direction lock open or closed mechanism..) I used 000 steel wool on the wood finish and removed the rough unfinished feeling from the handle.. without actually going into the wood.. it appears the (semi-)gloss finish gives it the rough feeling.. (left a little to thick, and unbuffed?) I'm quite pleased with this knife... (Note: brie is best at room temperature on a wheat cracker LOL..) Thanks as always for your fine videos!
Great vid right down to the firecraft ... good to see a regional 'flavor' too. That traditional French peasant's knife was shown in a museum exhibit of the 100 most beautiful products in the world along with Porsche and Rolex. You got class, man! Just remember the Grey Poupon mustard on the next trip.
Well I have bought a N7 and looks nice. I have been using for two weeks and ... now have a small dent in the blade. I use to eat and prepare food or eat. And when you clean the knife ... it is hard to manipulate. The wood absorbs water. I have care of it but that small (really small) dent ruined the experience a bit. So it is not perfect but has advantages and the main two is good looking and lightweight. The disadvantages: take care with water and the blade. So I have bought annother one a bit better ... well much better but cost several times the Opinel N7.
I can confirm that the newer no.8 is the same as your no.9 in terms of locking mechanism. I do opinel handle and patina mods and the newer design is every bit as good as the original in terms of quality, it's just a little safer, making it an excellent first folding knife, in fact I plan on doing up a custom no.6 for my nephew for when he turns 13 in a couple years though I might give it to him sooner if he expresses an interest in becoming a boy scout
Good stuff Walker, another nice video. I have two no 7s, one carbon and one stainless. They both have their charms and I love them. Not very sharp out of the factory, I also had to do some stropping. Only thing I hate is that locking mechanism. That ring is not very tight on one of them and has turned before leaving me almost with 4 fingers on one hand. Maybe someone here has a tip on how to tighten the ring? Cheers!
it’s pretty easy to make it tighter just put a bit of olive oil on the wood under the ring and let the wood get swollen from soaking up the oil. It will be tight again.
Hey Kevin. Do you know of any product on the market that is really good at preventing dehydration when on the trail? If there is one I need it because I seem to almost always get dehydrated even when I drink a lot of water
The only thing I ever used beyond water are electrolyte tabs. Also the Sawyer Squeeze allow me to drink more often as will crack it out when crossing streems/
It's the Rails-to-Trails in CT which then goes off to multiple narrower trails. I free hand sharpen. I can do these with a stone but also they seem a bit convexed so employ soft pad (old school mouse pad or foam) and sand paper of 2000 or 1500 then 1000 or 600 grit. Use a magic marker to see the areas coming in contact if you're new at free hand. Also feel the sand paper grasp the material. Go easy and don't apply too much pressure. It's not something which can't be forced IMO though no expert.
@@MegaWoodswalker Haha I live about 10mins away from that section of trail! I used to mountain bike on all those narrow trails. You can get to the top of highway 25 from there which is cool. I'm goin to look into that sharpening method!
So, I'm a fan of Mora's. But I'm intrigued with these knives. I traditionally buy the same thing for all the guys at Christmas. I have 2 questions , #8 or #9 ? SS or carbon? Wait there is a 3rd question. #3 can you place a lanyard hole in it or will that possibly be a problem. Its only a couple bucks to have drilled but ya know just asking and I'm considering engraving each for the boys? Not sure yet. but I'm not crazy about the branding on the handle, is it just ink rolled or is it etched. I'm afraid I'm going to be getting a shoe box full so feel free to give me some advise with reasons if ya got em. Thanks. Great video by the way. You'd have to give me one of those knives to get me to eat that cheese lol.
#8 is the most common and best selling Opinel model, suitable for every day carry. #9 is just slightly bigger. You can't go wrong with both. Ss if you don't bother maintaining the blade ,suitable for food prep. Carbon steel will rust if you don't maintain it. You can drill a hole for lanyard, no problem at all. There's a few people doing it on UA-cam. You can check them out. The logo is probably roll on or stamp on. It's not etched on. I think you can probably remove it with some sandpaper. I could be wrong with the statements above, it's just personal point of view. Hope it helps :)
Hey, Kevin! And what am I going to say today...well, that was a great demonstration of this knives’ abilities around the campsite. But I was wondering, did the Brie, bread, and pate taste like arm hair and wood? Just wondering..
Is no one going to comment on how he butchered those poor ingredients? Lol, unwrap the cheese first (though it was an interesting knife sharpness test!).
Sorry, American "cheese" is plastic and mass produced. So many fabulous European cheeses to try. As for "French fries", I prefer English 'chips'..fatter, soggier, more potato.
