- Hi all. Here is a video from August 2015 when 2 Draken A4N Skyhawk visited on a Gas n Go. I was fortunate enough to be able to pop up to Prestwick and catch them arriving and departing on the day. I was very lucky to see these. I hope you all enjoy the video.

I was an engine mechanic on the P&W J-52 used in the A-4 and A-6 from 1969 to 1972. The A-4 was so easy to work on! Two mechs could pull the engine in about 45 minutes and reinstall it in about the same time. The bad part was servicing the forward "Hell Holes" where the accessory drives were when the engine was running. It was beyond loud and, yes, my ears still ring to this day. These two aircraft look very different, most notably the tail pipe and the speed brakes. Still a gorgeous plane and hard to believe the design has been in service for over 65 years. Semper Fi!
Noticed the tailpipe right away. Looks very odd! Still, glad to see these icons still flying and working.
@@Dave-xh9oc I didn't notice any vortex generators.
Ex NZAF machines, fitted with radar and had a complete rewire.
I have read that some A4 where retrofited with non afterburning GE404 turbofan engines.
@@allywharton5745 These are not the ex New Zealand Skyhawks. The NZ A4s were modernised in the late 80s, early 90s. Which included new avionics, electronics, wiring, radars, cockpit displays, and new spars and wings. Along with new generation smart weapons etc. This refurbishment/upgrade contract was awarded to Smiths Industries Avionics Corp. And the work was carried out by Safe Air Aviation at their facilities in Blenheim NZ. The upper avionics hump you see behind the cockpit on these A4s, was removed.
Two beautifully presented aircraft. Great to see these birds put to good use. Still have great memories of popping over to Ohakea from Palmerston North for the A4 Arrival Open Day. I had regular on-base liaison with the Photographic Unit at Ohakea over the years and my ears are still ringing from tinnitus caused by those screeching high speed low passes along the runway just to let the Base Personnel know they were kings of the sky.
Thanks for Watching. Considering their age, great to see them still flying.
Beautiful birds, loved by everybody. Good to see these A4s in such amazing shape
Indeed, they are, thanks for watching 😃
Idk how this ended up on my recommended.
But im glad it did. Beautiful aircraft for their age.
Thanks for Watching :) Yeah, the recommended section on UA-cam is completely broken currently.
Age is just a number. These planes are just as good to look at now as ever.
Hey, my dad flies these jets! He works for Draken! This is really cool!
Hb hp iiihhh pl

@das wright these are not the kiwi ones, these are A4ns
@@regregan5755 too true, us kiwis got rid of the avionics hump by completely updating to entire operating systems
Glad to see these scooters being used!
This was my favorite Blue Angels jet...

That sound never ended. It sounds as good as mom & Dad back frm deployment.
1975 thru 1979 in VMA 223 loved those birds
Man, it's awesome to see A-4s still being flown. They have excellent maneuverability, and even though they are a subsonic platform, they're still pretty fast.
Dit toi Argentine en a eue gravement besoin et lui a rendue de fier service durant les malouines
The A-4K's (ex New Zealand) Draken use for combat training are even better, they were modified here with much newer avionics, and with modified wings.
They are gorgeous flying birds
While serving in the 1974 Marine Corps I came across these Aircraft at Iwakuni Japan and MCAS El Toros California
Mutlap I worked on them at Iwakuni in 1970-71.
What does Scotrail82 mean by Draken? The only Draken I know of is a pretty good fourth generation Swedish jet fighter.
It's cool watching carrier-based aircraft as they land. Navy planes are built with over-sized landing gear, to handle the rigors of carrier traps (touchdowns at about 700-800 feet-per-minute descent rate with the aid of a tail hook and arrestor cables) and cat shots (takeoffs wit the aid of steam- or electromagnetically-operated catapults. ) Traps are more of a controlled crash, really, with little if any discernible flare and full takeoff power maintained in the flare and touchdown until the tail hook securely If a cable beaks or the hook misses the cables the pilot has to "bolt", ir a rejected landing or go-around, hence the full power at touchdown . As aviation goes that's pretty extreme stuff, especially if its done at night in bad weather with poor visibility without the carrier's running lights illuminated to simulate actual wartime conditions where the ship would be more vulnerable if lit up. Naval aviators' eye balls tend to roll back into their eye sockets just thinking about night traps. They all hate them but recognize the necessity of acquiring and maintaining that skill.
When that A-4's little delta wing stalls,it stalls sharply, unlike most light aircraft which tend to have docile stall characteristics. .A-4s were also well known for having an early form of hydraulically boosted controls, which gave the ground attack jet amazing roll rate at its subsonic speeds. In fact I read somewhere that A-4s had so much roll rate, around 900 degrees per second, that pilots were taught to never to use full stick deflection for fear of becoming visually disorientated. At low speeds and altitudes that could be a deadly mistake.
Thanks for Watching. Its the name of the company that owns and operates these A4s.
Thanks Scotrail82, for clearing that up. Happy landings!
I don't see any arresting hooks ?
Some where there's combat video of Argentine A-4's attacking the English anchorage in the Falklands. These aircraft are incredibly manoeurvable. In one clip,
flying at wave top level good & fast an A-4 is trying to lose a small man portable antiair missile !
I never imagined a jet fighter-bomber could move as intensely as this Argentine pilot made his A-4 that day .Unfortunately the stinger like missile kept right up with him, move for move till .......
I salute those Argentine pilots who fought like lions in 2nd hand aircraft against far superior forces, they were good men.
AKA Scooter
Pause video at 2 minutes you can see the arresting hook
No match for the Harrier.
Malvinas, no Falklands
They look awesome those A4s, especially with a sidewinder going up their jet pipe!!
Thats hilarious, the same A4 shown used to be owning Us F16 pilots asses at Topgun when RNZAF were flying them. Google.
Nz air force still has a few of these parked up for sale wrapped up in glad wrap . 14yrs they been on the market
Don't think so, Draken bought some of them.
love those A-4s
Same here, Thanks for Watching :)
Heinemann's Hot Rod. And they were a fantastic attack aircraft. Very agile.
Fantastic shots mate! Very nice work :)
Thanks Mate.
Very nice!
Thanks for Watching.
i like this fighter jet.its body, shape and colour..i love it
Thanks for Watching :)
The Word "Draken" is Swedish and in English it´s Dragon
Never even realised this. Thanks for Watching & for the Information :)
My pleasure :)
And it's actually the name of a Swedish fighter jet from about the same era - the SAAB Draken.
It's actually singular form, "the dragon"; "drake" would translate as "dragon".
LOS INGLESES SUFRIERON GRANDES BAJAS! GRACIAS A ESTOS CAZAS EN MALVINAS! VALIENTES PILOTOS ARGENTINOS!💪💪💪💪💪
Cazas?creo que son bombarderos
wonder if its the same two i sa2 today in tulsa oklahoma? they dont fly in the sates anymore. ... was an awesome and confusing sight.
I honestly have no idea, might of been you never know. I caught these 2 back in 2015. Thanks for Watching :)
They are the 2 A4N leased by French Company, SDTS, on their way to Nîmes.
Ah right, thanks for the information and watching :)
Where is Preswick Airport???
It is in Turkmenistan. Lovely airport, very quiet though.
First time i saw the Blue Angels imn 1978, they were flying A4s
Who are the Blue Angels ? WG LOL The Red Arrows never flew A4s oh and the Harriers had them cornered
Is the extended tailpipe a hush kit?
Is it owned by a private??
OMG IMPRESSIVE!!!
LIKED LIKED LIKED!
Thanks a lot :)
very nice vid. liked!!
Thanks for Watching.
Still in service in Brazil Navy.
Really wow! Brazil has lots of outdated equipment. I like HMS ocean though.
Kinda reminds me of the f4 phantom, even though it has only one engine.
@Terry Tytula Phantom II actually dwarfs the Skyhawk. That's why the A-4 is called the "Scooter".
@@jazzandbluesculturalherita2547 Good to know

DRAGON!! LIKE 📢👹
Goofy little plane, but it played its role well.
Thanks for Watching and it still does to this day :)
I mistook them to be Swedish. 😅
A15
The United States needs to build a new skyhawk. Instead of spending hundreds of million s on one plane!
Jay Jordan+ It would be out classed, range to short, payload limited, and radar less than useless, you make like it, it may look nice, but as a fighter jet its had its day.
Thats a bad little bird. Does everything is asked to,and then some im sure.
Los ingleses conocen bien este avion 😎😎
Son aviones estadounidenses
The Aviators in my squadron loved flying the scooter back in the early 90s.
Love to see the Scooters fly !! Took note of Prestwick, where my dad did a gas & go with his B-24 in 1944 on the way to combat.
Rare and great to see the quality of care on them.
Thanks for Watching.
I was a sailor and my first post was an A 4 training squadron in CA in 1970. Got to ride in the back seat of the T A 4 lots of times. I love that little plane.
Its hard to believe when these babies 1st rolled out of the factory the price tag was only $860,000 each for the 1st 500 made
Indeed!
Malvinas "Argentina "
@flip inheck Ah yes, a lot of RN ships sunk by that "targets drones". silly boy....
Still in use with the Brazilian Navy, and it's because we have no money for a modern naval fighter/bomber.
These aircraft seen here are EX-Royal New Zealand Airforce Skyhawks which in the late 1980s were updated with avionics of the F-16/18 and weapons/programs and updated wings etc. They ended up not losing a single aircraft at "Top Gun" , "destroyed multiple F-16s/F-18s/F-20 Tiger Sharks and even F-15s had a hard time in mock air to air combat with RNZAF A4-K (K for Kahu) Skyhawks coming out on top always. Type up RNZAF Singapore exercises etc to see how good these aircraft were before being disbanded in 2001 after the cancellation of the F-16 Program replacement. Don't underestimate these things
Great video. Good to see the old A4's still flying although they do sound like a mini vulcan with the howl.
Thanks for Watching. Yeah they do sound like mini Vulcans. A lot of people are saying that about the new C Series as well.
Some are at Nellis AFB; the Skyhawk lives!
@das wright Yes thanks to that Bitch Helen Clark, PM at the time.
I think they sound more like a 737 or DC-9.

Awesome to See Scooters Again! My Dad Worked on them at El Toro while Stationed there in the 70's. Got to do a Walk Around when ALL 7 Blue Angels were Lined up on the Tarmac. Fat Albert Too! Have Pics of that Day. :)
Tinnitus compliments of Pratt & Whitney.
Thanks for Watching Buddy :)
... And 57 years of Fender & Stratocaster, and a few rounds of Colt & Defender ...
the a 4 and f4 can still fly today for the usaf
@@Tonetwisters That's for sure. I was careful about my hearing but bands and shooting will eventually surprise you with 130 db.
Electric guitars for me. Love the skyhawk
This was the plane flown by late Senator John McCain over Vietnam when he was shut down and capture. Also was used by the Argentinian Air Force during the Falkland Islands war with Great Britain
same birds we have in Argentina from 60s to 80s.. them fought on 1982 in the South Atlantic conflict against British.... on the middle of 90s... Argentina's government had an agreement with usaf and u.s to rebuild and upgrade them... to change and use f16 sistems... now their name is A4 AR FIGHTINGHAWKS... thanks for the video....

Cambodgia primitiva
Worked on the M model in the marines back in 82......love this bird
Thanks for Watching, that must of been a great job, it is an awesome machine.
All ex RNZAF A4s brought from the Australian Govt in the 70s, fitted with F16 avionics in the 90s and it appears they have been re engined as the old JT8s are obsolete now
Wow, never knew that. Thanks for the information and watching the video :)
Was called Pproject Kahu
Watch this video and see them in action during exercises from HUD
(shooting the F-16, MiG, F-5, F-18 etc)
ua-cam.com/video/axy3Y8RN6FQ/v-deo.html
NZ bought ex RAN A4G's in the 80's to supplement the A4K's bought new in the 70's. Draken international acquired a mix of A4G/K's updated from project Kahu. Was one heck of a good upgrade - such a shame to lose them. I believe they are based in Florida now.
@@alastaircodd7302 I don't know much about aircraft, but from what I understand, yes, these upgrades were serious, with a view of making the Scooter a long serving little fighter/bomber for minor nations. And then, it seems like the idea concept fell apart. But these must be the best retrofitted 50s planes ever made.
@Spartacus Maximus im croatian grew up in nz Auckland croatia was going to buy 12 f 16 from israel but the US said you can only sell them to a third buyer if they are not mod even though croatia had already chosen them thats embarrassing
Great vid. Heinemann's Hot Rod will always be one of my favorites !
Always loved "Scooter," but had no idea it had such a quick acceleration!
Question; is the exhaust extension from a new engine, or for noise suppression?
Great video of a classic great plane!
Glad to be corrected; Probably ex- Israel A4s - The extended tailpipe was to stop missiles going up it!!
Love that Skyhawk
Same here, thanks for watching :)
You have missed the point.
A4 ar fightinghawk
I remember going to Prestwick Airport in the 60's on a school outing and seeing a "huge" PAN-AM Boeing 707 right next to the boundary fence..... Oh how times have changed.
Times have certainly changed. Thanks for Watching.
I think there used to be a road from Monkton which crossed the runway(with barriers OC) I remember we were in my dad's car stopped at the barrier(mid-60's) and 4 lightning fighters took off,the roar was deafening but an unforgettable experience for a 10 year old
beautiful plane 😉👍
Thanks for Watching :)
Hermoso avión , gracias por el video. Saludos desde Argentina
Ex israeli air force...
Is that american airforce or not ? Is that Which country airforce ?
It's an American company that owns these and helps train pilots
2 ex RNZAF aircraft
Draken have more than the ex-RNZAF A4's. These have a hump and a modified tailpipe which the the A4K's didn't have.
There was a squadron of A4's at MCAS Cherry Point NC while I was stationed there, my favorite plane.
Aeronautical Engineering Axiom - "If it looks Good, it is Good." Still applies to these ol' birds.
I remember this aircraft, in my childhood i have lots stickers of this, which I collected under bread wrapper. The bread company use to attract customer by providing variety of stickers under there wrapper.
My parents were in the RNZAF and I used to hear lots of stories about these! How scary they were during navy ship defense exercises, as if almost popping out of nowhere.
Shame new eland has none now.
Or any fast jets atall, nz had over 1000 atack aircraft after 1945 but none today and 61 total aircraft but no jets. Sad
Loved those Skyhawks roaring around the sky's when I was growing up, sad they have gone
Unless things have changed these two are still New Zealand government owned, Draken operated A4K's with their Kahu avionics update included.
These aren't Ex RNZAF
@@NighthawkNZ You sure ? Because they purchased quite a few A4,s from NZ
@@rnichol22 These are A4N the RNZAF operated upgraded A4ks (with the Kahu upgrade) Draken also kept the Kiwi Roundel logo on the 8 A4K's they bought from the NZG. The two in this video are most likely ex Isreal air force.
@@NighthawkNZ I see, I'm suprised the camouflage is exactly the same as the newzealand versions, unless I'm looking at the wrong pics lol. Found the history they are indeed Israeli. With a new paint scheme

Was in v.m.a. 331 in Beaufort s.c. Back in 1968 loved working on these planes

My dad use to see these old A4's down in GITMO Cuba every time he was deployed down there back in the 1980's, the Marine Corp had an A4 air wing permanently assigned there to protect the garrison. He has some great pictures from that little military Caribbean resort.
God bless 'em ...
I was there for REFTRA in 88. I often saw them flying over the bay.

Cold War Falcons n Ravens.
It was a very sad day when the NZ govt sold off all there A4s
@flip inheck well they are hard to sell ,in fact I think they are the kind of thing you buy and end up stuck with them because they are a weapon ,they dont want to end up in the wrong hands , in fact nz brought them probably knowing they could not on sell instead rgey would have to be returned to M.D in the US for destruction
@@gruntabro1 When the traitor Clark announced our A4k's were clapped out & obsolescent and she wanted to sell them, the Pentagon promptly gave her a list of countries she was not to sell them to. To weaken our Air Force by withdrawing the transonic A4 was (like several others of her acts) a result of undeclared pacifism.
Great catches mate!

Ok :-)
I remember watching Skyhawks in the circuit at Ohakea when on a trip to New Zealand, there used to be a branch of the RNZAF museum at the base with a cafe and viewing terrace. We were lucky on that day as there were 4 Skyhawks doing local training flights and circuits. The following year the then Prime Minister of NZ scrapped the fighter arm of the RNZAF and I believe gave most of the Skyhawks away!!
These are the ex RNZAF skyhawks and they were sold to this company not given. 9 are with the air force museum and loaned out to other museums around NZ and 1 went to Australia.
@@regregan5755 I stand corrected, it was my RNZAF friends that were saying that the aircraft were given away, then again they weren't very happy about the fighter arm of the Airforce being disbanded and tended to moan about anything associated with Helen Clark's government.
@@mikeandtriciajohnson7241 yes was a very sad day for the air force by all accounts, she single handedly killed an entire services morale.
I went to Warbirds over omaka to see them in their last show, they were awsuuuum
@@regregan5755 No these Skyhawks are not the ex New Zealand ones. The NZ Skyhawks were extensively upgraded in the late 80s, early 90s. As part of that upgrade. The avionics hump you see behind the cockpit, on these A4s was removed.
I've always loved the A4 Skyhawk because my late Uncle Bobby was a Marine fighter pilot and did two combat tours in Vietnam.
Had a co-worker that was in an A-4 unit in Nam that set a tonnage record. To my mind Skyhawk could still be in service today flying CAS

It goes black prior to the break??
Awesome that Jared Isaacman managed to go to space 'inspiration 4', On some of the profits he made with these aircraft.
He bought 4 of them from the RNZAF to join his private air force of over 77
that Draken owns, including 30 Russian MiG-21 and a mint MiG-29UB fighter.
If these are ex-RNZAF why do they have the avionics hump on the back of the fuselage again?
These aren't ex-RNZAF. These ones have been re-engined and still have the "hump" so can't be ex-RNZAF. Someone else says ex-Israeli.
