Hey guys. Good show. Always fun However, I feel a duty to inform you of the band that Nin stole the most from. Shock Therapy was an electro-punk band from Detroit not far from where I live. They began releasing music in 1984 and have a tremendous discography. Not to be confused with the rock a billy band of the same name. They took off in Germany early on and even resided there for a while but remained unknown here in the states. I rarely meet anyone who knows of them and they literally lived 20 miles from my house. The lyrics and music is raw and vulnerable, but from a deeply disturbed point of view, no fakery. Not marketable lyrically since he sings about being wrecked from trauma, pissing the bed, crying at night hooked on drugs realistically; unromantic and shameful. Hmm, change it to emo lyrics and trendy it up a bit and we have a product! Unfortunately, Itchy, the singer- songwriter who diarized this brilliant but tortured music passed away a few years ago. I went to his memorial at a bar in Royal Oak and met a slew of ex band members who talked of him carefully as if not to strain my fondness of him. There's a guy called Jimmy Doom who I met there who told the story of how Trent got his band name. You can find it on youtube. At a Shock Therapy show in Ohio some guy rushed the stage with a railroad spike in an attempt to kill Itchy mid-performance. I heard that Trent Reznor was there and was even involved with disarming the man who was in fact wielding a nine inch nail. Well, it also comes as no surprise that the first Marilyn Manson album sounds alot like old ST, Cake and Sodomy biting "No Thoughts are Free" off the Touch Me and Die album really hard. But where Marilyn Manson went on to imitate other forms of music, Trent stayed behind to rumage through the 15 or so Shock Therapy albums looking for songs to sanitize and reuse. Anyway, sorry for the rant but I try to spread the word whenever I can but most importantly I think you would like this wierd band. They are one of my all time favorites and surely are unique
More like the Sonic Drive-in of goth: Marilyn Manson's music is represented as a big juicy goth burger, but it's really a smushed, soggy, meatcake that was scraped off the floor of the goth kitchen.
@Ray , you have some discography flowcharts out there, to explore the different albums. Each one is subjective in some degree, sure, but they can help a lot. Most are very useful because, like almost any band, NIN has changed over time (a few times). My favorite album is Downward Spiral (cliché!). But I can't choose this album without having a hard time, leaving a step behind "The Fragile" and "Pretty Hate Machine" (each one for their own reasons). I love Broken (LP) too, very addictive to me, and "And all that could have been" it's very fitting sometimes. Everything Reznor did since Ghosts I-IV (2008) until now... well, I'm sorry to say that recent works doesn't mean as much to me. If you want something hard and industrial: "Downward Spiral". Less noisy: "The Fragile". More noisy: "Broken" and then "Fixed". Rock: "Whit Teeth". Something new wave: "Pretty Hate Machine". Electronic: "Year Zero". Instrumental and melancholic: "And all that could have been". Maybe I'm being tiresome! So I'll finish just saying which song made me realize that this band was 'out there for me': The Big Come Down.
@@generose9083 Actually it kind of is. Trent Reznor even said himself that he does everything in studio himself, but has a band onstage because he thought it would be boring to watch one man preform.
@@DomDizzler5053absolutely false. He doesn't play drum except on maybe 2-3 songs. Involves many musicians for guitar, foley and synths. Who gives a fuck if it's a band or not. It's unique and surpassed everyone in its genre.
I'd consider myself a pretty big fan of NIN, but i loved listening to this - a lot of it is funny and insightful, especially looking back at the 90s goth subculture. "Cringey" is probably an accurate way to describe a lot of it, including Trent's childish rage-quits and occasional bad poetry (the latter of which still seems to be a problem today, e.g. "Copy of a..", "With Teeth") You have a pretty solid knowledge of his work, so I can't fault you for not being exposed to it like a lot of fans I'm sure would. I do think it's a little unfair to say X is a ripoff of Y and then go onto state how it's also a ripoff of Z, and W. In other words, it's obvious that the mentioned bands (New Order, Ministry, Skinny Puppy) have served as notable influences to his music. Each of them brings a different element and each band is very different from each other. Where do you draw the line between inspiration and ripoff? With reference to being the McDonald's of goth/industrial: With few exceptions, industrial-type acts did not break through because they had very little in the way of being commercially accessible. All of those complex sample layers and dissonant strikes, drones, and chords were all a part of the sonic vocabulary of industrial, but clean rock vocals were definitely a differentiator in a field where vocal distortion effects were the norm. Also, if you thought Downward Spiral was too busy and chaotic, it's hard to imagine you being cool with listening to a Skinny Puppy album (although it's cool to name drop them for cred with the goth crew, a lot of their shit is heinously unlistenable). To compare their music to McDonald's is fine, but the analogy only works if you've tasted what everyone else is offering and the equivalent to the industrial genre is a lot of those restaurants haphazardly throwing ingredients at your head and calling it a burger. Anyway, you keep making them and I'll keep watching them. Stay safe.
I accidentally found this podcast looking for Tool song in Spotify (not there) and thought it might be amusing but, then I saw them compare NIN to Ministry and Skinny Puppy!! and dude!! who even knows these bands?!?! Brilliant

NIN wrote one industrial album named Broken. Then during their next 2 albums he sprinkled a few heavy songs in them. NIN was truly heavy for a few brief moments.
Reznor on that Ruiner guitar solo: '"Ah yes, the great, Pink Floyd-esque, Seventies-sounding section of the song. That's just a preset on the Zoom. I think I accidentally called up the wrong patch. I'm not a soloist. I was just laughing when I was playing with this ridiculous sound, recording into the computer saying like, "This is so cheesy," you know? It's silly." But he goes, "Man, that guitar section was fucking great."'

Obviously PHM sounds corny as fuck, but why zero in on his first album? He evolved like overnight into something way cooler with the next album, Broken. I still love PHM in all its goth goofiness.
A lot of the fans of this podcast are exactly the same as Radiohead or tool fans, every episode has at least 3 comments telling people "this is satire, it went over your head". I'm not sure if this whole thing is satire, but if it is that makes me sad because I really am this angry about shitty music, and thought I finally found others who felt the same 😥
I think it's semi-satirical, cos they sound legit pissed or bewildered most of the time, and a LOT of what they say is actually spot on. If you didn't know the stuff they tell you about to be true, it would sound like pure satire, especially for The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Radiohead, Nirvana, Green Day, RATM, The Smiths, U2, Weezer, and Sublime. The facts about ALL of them are actually that astounding. Even as someone who likes songs from most of those bands, I find it baffling and pathetic
@@PBL187 yeah, I actually like some stuff from the bands they reference, but I don’t think they could be more on point when it comes to the fans of these (or any) bands being a major point of ruining the enjoyment of their music. I think nirvana fans have to be the worst because of the way they idolize an extremely mediocre band that happened to write a decent amount of good songs… don’t even get me started on “grunge”, it’s awful music from awful bands, and nirvana, if anything, was a punk band anyway. If I’m 100% honest, I think it’s that these people who only listen to the bands who make it to radio (like Green Day, Jimmy eat world, or similar music), think that’s all there is, and only give them a chance because it’s beat into them through repetition. I once heard someone say that weezer was the Beatles of our generation, and that’s probably one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard. For one, the Beatles are terribly overrated. And two, that title belongs to the Descendents/All, who are actually better than the Beatles in almost every way. But I guess that’s only the opinion of an extremely opinionated dummy who bases it solely on how the music moves me, so I’m probably not the person to ask
NIN is my favorite band, part of my identity as a person, and I've seen them live 3 times. I bought the T-shirt at those concerts and more at Hot Topic! And I have "most" of the HALOS! Honestly - This was really awesome! Yes, the lyrics are really BAD! And the studio tricks are really REPETITIVE! You could go even further down the spiral! Not only did they do the dreaded "Double Album" - they did the dreaded Instrumental "GHOSTS" - one through FOUR - Trent is somewhat responsible for MARYLYN MANSON'S career (that's a good subject for a future your favorite band sucks discussion), Ghosts V and VI (more instrumentals), Johnny Cash did HURT better than NIN!, LEST WE FORGET - YEAR ZEROTHE "Concept Album"! Lastly, NIN is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Material for a part 2? "I think you owe me a great big apology!!!"
You guys are hilarious and addictive. I am African American but I love all Rock rock music. I hated some bands especially the b sides of many big bands. Wow y’all are entertaining amazing.
The guitar, drums and general vibe on Down In It do sound like Dig It. Then the guy starts to sing. 😂 that's what I will say for every ripoff. The copy far outweighs the original. Trent's voice is just the best for this genre.
I came to this podcast because I wanted to hear people talk shit about U2 and stayed to be amused by people talking shit about some of my favorite bands lol
Closer : a dance song that has never been topped. Sounds huge. Crazy interesting textures. Sex and candy : an okay song by an okay band that has nothing unique and oooooh wow, are played on "real" instruments. Musicians are narcissistic. Get over it. Show me well adjusted people who create interesting art.
Wow must be pretty easy to look down on everybody from your f****** pedestal. So what universally acclaimed and loved the world over band did you guys create and write all the music for?
Flood saved Pretty Hate Machine in production. Trent managed to figure out how to produce albums better later on but Purest Feeling is rough to listen to.
Listen to Breaking Glass by David Bowie. Then listen to Closer by Nine Inch Nails. Also, listen to Lava by Ministry. Then listen to Antichrist Superstar by Marilyn Manson. This one's lazy af.
Welp. I’ll correct you. I’m a big NIN fan so how your wife didn’t know about this is beyond me. Anyways, here’s the scoop; while filming the music video for “Down in it” the balloon that was filming Trent lying down came undone and ended up in a guys pasture way out in the country of Ohio I believe. The guy turned it in and the footage ended up being used a feature for the news show Hard Copy. Yes, it happened. Here is the link to the Hard Copy clip... m.ua-cam.com/video/5gV8yQc0m7g/v-deo.html
So I've never heard this band. And after finding out that the grammys gave them an award for metal. WTF is this?? This isn't metal. Are the grammys doing whippits?
The grammys gave Sweet Child O' Mine an award for best heavy metal something or was it MTV, but yeah goes to show that the industry don't give two shits about Metal
Used to be a fan after i turned 17 i was like i dont like this band anymore.. 😂😂😂😂 im 36 now.. Their songs are always "depressing" and negative... After a while it gets old fast Songs seen to be the samething its a fact. That they are a rip off of SKINNY-PUPPY when i found skinny-puppy.. I was like omg!!!! this dude is a rip off sonically.
Lol, I had the same experience when I first heard Skinny Puppy. NIN was just a cash grab to capture "Industrial" fans. The music doesn't hold up over time. Skinny Puppy early albums are still fun to listen to. I never listen to NIN anymore.
..Broken is there best record an awesome record and I guess going up that year against Ace of Base Spin Doctors and that god-awful band Live that song about the Dolphin's cry..... also you need to do one on Tool because they just take Rollins band Rush Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and how they try to act all like underground and in Maynard thinks he's cool because he makes wine and wears wigs because he wishes he had hair... but really they're just like Nine Inch Nails go back and look at Tool Maynard James Keenan's Public Access video just like Nine Inch Nails wearing spandex... Skinny Puppy Front Line Assembly Front 242 Pig will be greater industrial bands then NIN....
Ministry Jr. LMAO. I liked NIN up until about the age of 16. Then I found Skinny Puppy and Ministry. So much better and more original than crybaby Trent.
@giftofgab247 That's funny because Trent has admitted that NIN is basically a Ministry rip off. What do you call a band that rips off a shit band? A SHITTIER BAND
to each their own but NiN is so much more versatile and Trent truly is a genius imo. yes he's incredibly edgy but that doesn't detract from the quality of his work, Ghosts 1-4 for example is a masterpiece just as much as the downward spiral or the fragile.
I really thought I was alone in my hatred of this band, and I say this as someone who went through the whole of their work several years ago. Surprised no one ever seems to mention that one of the songs on 'The Downward Spiral', in the context of the album's quote-unquote "story", is the main character assaulting someone.
What really sucks is the name "Tyler" which George Carlin called soft, lol. Can't stand this guy anymore. The nicer dude is a lot less angry and centered. What also sucks even more than these podcasts are the awfully designed $28 dollar tshirts these guys are pushing. I was literally disgusted just looking at them on their website. These guys have little creativity, and are pretty much the same thing they are criticizing. I get it though, but I'm done watching these videos. Guy needs to grow up and sound less whiney.
They just reminded me of Skinny Puppy. Glad you mention this. Complete rip off. Never liked when Trent sings and goes all boy band either. Are you industrial hardcore or N Sync? Do Marilyn Manson if you haven't. Even worse. You mention Trent and a laser pen light incident. Don't throw a bottle at Manson because he'll urge the crowd to beat you up. Also beat up a fan with a guitar watch?v=wrlmTwf-ZyA. Surely assault (if real). Also starts shit with band members. Total dick.
Nine inch Nails ripped off Bauhaus. If it wasn't for Bauhaus NIN would have never existed. A lot of other bands tried copying Bauhaus too since they pretty much invented the genre of gothic rock.
@@littles3715 That is true. But other people agree that one of Nine Inch Nails artistic influences was Bauhaus. They even call Peter Murphy ''The Godfather of goth''. NIN and Peter Murphy even did a show together.
@@EvilDeadRecordsVideo Al has definitely squeezed a few great songs out since then, but I wouldn’t put it past you to ignore them because it’s like like panning for gold (more like silver lol) in a river of creative bankruptcy/self parody, bizarre annoying noise, and out of touch half-hearted political messages.

Obviously PHM sounds corny as fuck, but why zero in on his first album? He evolved like overnight into something way cooler with the next album, Broken. I still love PHM in all its goth goofiness.
Robin Finck did get to be in GNR for a while though...
The Beatles were playing tape tricks in 1966.
Man they really do suck. *That's what I get....Tuuuuuaaah* at the end of each time he says get is massive cringe.
Nine Inch Numan.
You guys are hilarious and addictive. I am African American but I love all Rock rock music. I hated some bands especially the b sides of many big bands. Wow y’all are entertaining amazing.
You dont need to buy Reznor Abums, just go in your kitchen and hit your pot wit ha spoon.
There, NIN music.
LOL! Love this. They ripped off the Jurassic Park sound boardn for the stupid guitar sound. Good one, Tyler.
That's so win among such suckage!
I know this episode is old but I request a Garth brooks sucks episode since it’s up Tyler Coes’s alley
Pleasantly surprised to learn that you guys prefer early Ministry. Not surprised at all to learn that you're closeted NIN fans
The guitar, drums and general vibe on Down In It do sound like Dig It. Then the guy starts to sing. 😂 that's what I will say for every ripoff. The copy far outweighs the original. Trent's voice is just the best for this genre.
Please do Greta Van Fleet!
Rem is boring yet they like sunny day real estate.
No ministry or nine inch nails without skinny puppy
You say that like it would be a bad thing.
@@YourFavoriteBandSucksPodcast I said it cause you didnt bring them up.
Add more groups with auto tuners. Uggh
What's wrong with being "emo"?
I've heard Saves the Days songs less emo than this... LMAMFAO
I've never met anyone that is a huge fan of NIN
*15:30 describing Korn fans
Not gonna lie, Korn is genuinely good.
Nope, that’s emo fans.

I came to this podcast because I wanted to hear people talk shit about U2 and stayed to be amused by people talking shit about some of my favorite bands lol
Their lyrical stuff sucks, you couldn't pay me to listen to it, but their instrumental work is fantastic.
False
Closer : a dance song that has never been topped. Sounds huge. Crazy interesting textures.
Sex and candy : an okay song by an okay band that has nothing unique and oooooh wow, are played on "real" instruments.
Musicians are narcissistic. Get over it. Show me well adjusted people who create interesting art.
Wow must be pretty easy to look down on everybody from your f****** pedestal. So what universally acclaimed and loved the world over band did you guys create and write all the music for?
as a goth, NIN is my favorite band, this is hilarious
Ok
i love NIN, screw you guys.
I bet these guys did like nin at one time, and thought trent was amazing
I used to like shitting in a diaper, but I grew up
Jesus built my hotrod rocks
dude there allsome
20:45 probably why theamazingatheist likes NIN lol
Flood saved Pretty Hate Machine in production. Trent managed to figure out how to produce albums better later on but Purest Feeling is rough to listen to.
I can’t believe these two agree on everything. Oh wait the second dude has no opinion of his own.

Come on how you gonna finna dis’ on nine inch nails
So I've never heard this band. And after finding out that the grammys gave them an award for metal. WTF is this?? This isn't metal. Are the grammys doing whippits?
The grammys gave Sweet Child O' Mine an award for best heavy metal something or was it MTV, but yeah goes to show that the industry don't give two shits about Metal
The Grammy's are voted on by cunts.
NIN is just Halloween music for edgy teens.
What about misfits lol

"depressing" and negative...
After a while it gets old fast

its a fact. That they are a rip off
of SKINNY-PUPPY when i found skinny-puppy..
I was like omg!!!! this dude is a rip off sonically.
Ogre would disagree with you.
Lol, I had the same experience when I first heard Skinny Puppy. NIN was just a cash grab to capture "Industrial" fans. The music doesn't hold up over time. Skinny Puppy early albums are still fun to listen to. I never listen to NIN anymore.
@@countvanbruno182 Something I Can Never Have is better than any Skinny Puppy song.
@Exe Cutie Uhhh, no, you return to where you came from, ex-cutie.
@@balladofcoseypolar4711 LMAO "Something I Can Never Have" is a whiny EMO song. Are you 14 years old?
NIN was, but is not
..Broken is there best record an awesome record and I guess going up that year against Ace of Base Spin Doctors and that god-awful band Live that song about the Dolphin's cry..... also you need to do one on Tool because they just take Rollins band Rush Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and how they try to act all like underground and in Maynard thinks he's cool because he makes wine and wears wigs because he wishes he had hair... but really they're just like Nine Inch Nails go back and look at Tool Maynard James Keenan's Public Access video just like Nine Inch Nails wearing spandex...

You're special.
@@balladofcoseypolar4711 I know
@giftofgab247 That's funny because Trent has admitted that NIN is basically a Ministry rip off.

Ok so now panning criticism. Man 😂 love the podcast but damn this is ridiculous. Fucking around in the studio is making music.
I really thought I was alone in my hatred of this band, and I say this as someone who went through the whole of their work several years ago. Surprised no one ever seems to mention that one of the songs on 'The Downward Spiral', in the context of the album's quote-unquote "story", is the main character assaulting someone.
this is not a serious podcast
mashedpotatoman `, The host’s comments in the “Fan Mail” episode would indicate otherwise.
@@TheRiverLeW maybe he's not serious in that ep. maybe he's pulling the wool over fans & haters alike.

Nin 🫡
I disagree they ripped off
SKINNY-PUPPY..
@@littles3715 That is true. But other people agree that one of Nine Inch Nails artistic influences was Bauhaus. They even call Peter Murphy ''The Godfather of goth''. NIN and Peter Murphy even did a show together.

Nice podcast. I used to listen to them with my friend when I was a teenager but I never actually liked their music much. I think this band is lame.

I like the first few releases. The first two studio albums and the first EP between them. After that they went downhill for me.
The only nine inch nails song that stands time for myself is piggy.
