Its surprising and scary how many people are susceptible to cults. This is why being a critical and objective thinker is so important. It can’t be stressed enough.

Its not just education though. Cults are precise in their slow envelopment of an individual's life. They use like minded opinions and generous gestures to give people a feeling of belonging integrating these new victims into their warped society.

At first, I thought about how I would never fall into the trap of joining a cult but then I remembered when I hit rock bottom and felt so hopeless; I converted to a new religion/ adopted new beliefs from that religion. I learned all of it through the internet and reliable sources and I thought if someone/ a group had come up to me instead to introduce me to those beliefs/ religion and asked me to join their cult I 100% would have joined.

I met a friend at a bar who played piano and told me he’s into Scientology and it unfortunately really turned me off to his vibe. We were really getting along, talking about gigging, becoming go-getters and whatnot and then he told me that and I got a complete different sense of motive for his conversations with me. He didn’t care about me getting gigs, he wanted me to become a Scientologist.

Man I've almost joined like 3 cults. It's not that crazy actually. Everyone is usually really nice and its a cool loving environment at first. Then they start talking about recruiting and want you to basically give up your life for their cause and then that's usually when I realize what's going on.

@Josh Traffanstedt It's exactly like that. They even said in the video cult leaders are narcisstic sociopaths. They fit the criteria perfectly. Charismatic, controlling, manipulative, grandiose sense of self, excessive need for admiration. People fall for narcissts and narcisstic sociopaths all the time. Most don't realise people can do nice things and appear to be good people but actually turn out to be absolute monsters. We also don't actually know anyone at all if we haven't known them very long at all

I just saw the name of the denomination I grew up in on the list from the USA. I paused and went on a multi hour search through articles. It all makes sense now. Everything I thought was insane and extreme growing up in Pentecostal churches now makes sense. Me thinking speaking in tongues and seeing demons was real leading to my love of paranormal fiction. My extended family cutting me off when I left, to the point that non of them have checked in on me to make sure I’m okay since my mother’s (still in the cult) recent death. The weird compulsions I have to fight to act, dress, etc. My feeling like sex is owed to a partner even when unwanted, but still feeling like the act itself is violating me even when I want it, feeling guilty for lusting for my husband (I am currently married). I grew up in a cult. And, now I can’t stop crying and I think I need therapy.

    • @ZeroGravity60
      @ZeroGravity60 2 роки тому

I agree. I was in a cult. At a young age, they put me in a school to learn how to become a productive peg in a top-down run organization that taught me what to believe and that they, the leaders were in place to serve me. It took years but I finally realized my education, the many group social initiations, and the claim they were here to serve me, it was all a lie. They blinded me of the truth, that I am soul & spirit 1st, mind & body 2nd. They'd drugged my mind and body with harmful chemicals, excessive sugar was routinely buried in my food. While they gave me back much of what I earned in a week, I had little choice but to spend it within the system I had been raised to serve. I didn't really spend it, I just gave it back. I got out of that cult and now live a life of LOVE - LAUGHTER - & LISTENING. Love for the morning star, laughter as a way to cleanse reality, & listening, listening to my own inner cult. I pray for the other members of this cult that they would wake up and realize their living in modern-day mind-numbing soul suppressing slavery. That cult even had a cool-aid company. No shame.

"my survival instinct had not been crushed". I think for me that sums up what I love the most about humanity, this drive towards life and survival and vitality. In my opinion that's the basic thing that distinguishes a cult from a healthy group: does it encourage the impulse towards life, autonomy or freedom, or does it try to crush it?

Same my mum's a narcissts. All cult leaders are narcissts. People can't make the connection between narcisstic abuse and cults even after it's known cult leaders are narcissts. A narcisstic family is it's own type of cult with a narcisstic figure head at top. A lot of people get fooled by a narcissists fake persona and by the time they figure out they got fooled they're living in the narcissts fantasy world they either submit themselves to it or have to find away to escape.
I had a cult yesterday try recruit me with the "God loves you, he's here for you and trust me he understands" then handed me a card about their meeting. They had the same brainwashed faces and glazed eyes you see on the faces of most members of every single cult. Cults are a lot easier to spot them most people realise. If you meet overly friendly people who's group can give you "the answers you're looking for" I mean make the obvious connection.

You aren't omniscient. You don't know what's the nature of Reality. And if someone has an experience of angels or spirits, you can't say "your experience isn't real."
For context, I am getting my graduate degree in psychology. I know the DSM criteria for delusional disorder. And psychologists usually reserve it for extreme cases like when you think someone loves you, but they have a restraining order against you. Disorders have to have: disfunction, distress, deviance, and danger. Believing elves sit on your shoulder isn't a delusional DISORDER, unless it's getting in the way of functioning, causing distress to yourself, or hurting others. Any idiot can read through the DSM-5 and say "they're all this disorder," but that's usually wrong, very annoying, and can be harmful!
People have been using psychological terms as a means to denigrate others for years. Slave owners said their slaves were mentally ill when they ran away. Sexist men "diagnosed" their wives with hysteria when they were being abused. And it's so annoying when people try to use psychological disorders to call people names.

There's nothing problematic with using the internet to read and discuss controversial topics.
However, the internet is riddled with deceptive people that employ sophisms to spin things away from rational thought with the goal of bringing emotional (and irrational) responses from others. As most of people have to be well versed in rethorical, logical and scientific thought to see through this trick - and they are not - a lot of people fall prey to conmen, cultists and crazy conspiracy theories.
Therefore, yes - the internet has become a catalist for crazy behaviour, and yes, it has to be regulated to curb this threat.

    Both are terrifying.

I’d also add Political Parties to this too, it may lack a one particular charismatic leader, but it is many hallmarks. Peer pressure from others including family, playing to vulnerable or hurt people, heavy indoctrination.

On this subject, they should do one on MLMs, probably the most popular cults. Some are more cult-like than others, of course.

This is why those with an important and inspirational message should present it freely. Don’t ask people to follow you. Don’t ask them for money and support. Find a job and support yourself.
Don’t ask people to join your group and come to your meetings. Don’t ask people to subscribe to your channel and listen to what YOU have to say. Just present your message and let it sit in the open. Continue presenting it even while knowing you’ll die, and several centuries will pass, before people begin to understand your point of view.
Anyone who does any of the aforementioned actions in an attempt to convince people to follow and support them, including those in the entertainment industry, have taken the first steps towards becoming a cult.

Nice and informative documentary. I really enjoyed it. Thanks for producing and sharing it. It reminds us of the importance of leading a good life free from fear, greed, violence, loneliness, and hatred.
We don't need to follow any cult or cult leaders; instead, we should embrace the tradition of living with our families, as our foreparents and parents did, with love as our guiding principle. There's no need to constantly seek new perspectives or overthink things too much.
We should always be cautious about donating money or dedicating ourselves to any leaders or groups, especially cult leaders. Unfortunately, many cult leaders and founders become wealthy while exploiting and impoverishing their innocent followers.

Certainty in anything other than love is dangerous. Love is allowing freedom of choice, freedom to ask questions, freedom to explore without harming yourself or others.
