Back when this show aired, we took watching stars like Vincent Price, Lee Grant and Mel Brooks for granted. They are greatly missed. Wally Cox was a very smart guy in real life.
Thank you for posting these. Wonderful episode, I adore Paul Lynde, Vinnie Price and Rosie, they were all top form tonight. Three fabulous entertainers, so love seeing them. Love Rosie rolling her eyes at Dear Abby. Thanks.
My family and I always watched this game, from the time it premiered. All the stars were known to us, as they had been famous from movies or tv. Vincent Price was handsome. It was one of the best games from the 1970s and before.
This is a rare episode where each celebrity was picked and the entire nine square grid was all filled up in a single round. Now that's what I love to see. There were many episodes where one celebrity was not selected during an entire show and I felt sorry for that star who was left out in the cold. There was not a single lox in the bunch in this classic episode of The Hollywood Squares.
I grew up on this show. This was on in our living room every day when it was on NBC Daytime. So many awesome memories. So glad Peter is still with us, and Rose and Mel Brooks too. So many legends in that grid whose souls have long since parted from this world. I always love the story Peter told about how not long after Wally Cox died, there were some flickering lights or something odd happening, and Peter calmly said "That's Wally."
Any child of the 70s will tell you how wonderful day time game shows were in the summer. They would stay on until 11 or 12 and then off to the pool for the day. Gosh life was great. No worries other than having enough money to get some taffy at the pool. In the 70s and 80s parents would drop kinds off at the pool, the mall, the skating rink and come back 2 or 3 hours later to pick them up. I'm talking about even 10 yr olds. Kids were more mature then. Plus you didn't worry about them getting nabbed. It was just different, and it was wonderful too.
My mom owned that exact model of organ the Kimball Swinger line. It came with a box set of sheet music with famous songs from the 60's and 70's. I used to love mixing the instruments to make unusual sounds. Kinda like my personal MOOG box.

Yes, his script writers certainly gave him the funniest material...nothing on this show is 'off the cuff' as it's all scripted and edited to the nth degree....that's Hollywood, nothing new.
You are very naive. Mostly scripted. John Davidson's remark about Japanese brides who traditionally cut off some hair from their body was by accident when he said: " oh on the whole, I would say. "

Yes, he was gone way too soon! Tragically, he lost in the “roulette wheel” of health but seemed to have a wonderful family life & those are the things that really matter.
One of the funniest game shows of the 70's and 80's. I love that the secret square is worth nearly $2,000. Today, that wouldn't buy you the make-up, let alone a billiard table, a Kroehler sofa, an electric organ AND a DQ certificate. DAYUM! Take me back 36 years to 1972 again.
Mike Preston-Engel: Of course, you'd have to be ready to accept a salary of, say, $3,000 to $4,000, depending on what type of work you were doing. It's all relative. :)
May God bless these stars on The Hollywood Squares who are no longer with us - especially Paul Lynde, Rose Marie, Vincent Price, Redd Foxx, Wally Cox - and Michael Landon!
That organ as a prize, WOW. I remember when my cousin took piano lessons and her neighbor took organ lessons (mid70ds) as 10 yr old girls. I begged my mom to do it. She was like first we can't afford it and second we don't have a piano, or an organ. I as a smart ass 9 yr old ask "what does that have to do with it?"

FYI Wally Cox was the voice of underdog in the 60’s and 70’s
I WATCHED HIM EVERY SATURDAY MORNING, LOL..
And in the 50s, he was Mr. Peepers.
