Making Golden Nesting Dragon Eggs - Amazing Metal Casting Process

  • In this video I will be casting a pair of golden nesting dragon eggs. This project was inspired from the Russian nesting dolls that most of you have seen. I started by 3d printing the dragon eggs using polycast castable filament. I made a mold of the eggs using investment plaster and then burned out the filament. I melted down some aluminum bronze and poured the molten metal into the molds. I then sanded and polished the eggs. The eggs now fit inside each other and are screwable to open and close. Great job man! You inspire me to fire up my CastMasters forge and make something cool.
I'm working on functional 3D prints and casting them in aluminum eventually, but you've taught me a lot in how the process is done and it is helping me to make the necessary components for the industry I'm in.

Great idea. The thread on the 2 pieces work well together, and are as good as you're going to get using that method. To get them to fit any tighter, almost seamlessly, you'd need to use a tap on a lathe, (albeit a very big one), but that's something else.

I think I would have actually just cleaned up and left the base on the large egg so that it could stand on it.
So running your furnace right on the edge of the garage under the door, do you have any sort of heat shield or anything above it as I would be concerned about it damaging the door?
