I've recently decided to have a go at building a few steam bent shells. In this video I'm bending a piece of kiln dried Ash about 9mm (3/8") thick x 125mm (5") wide which I soaked in my bath tub for a few days, then it was steamed for about 30mins. I've bent two pieces like this which will eventually be glued together once they have dried. I still don't really know what I'm doing yet, but I've managed to make a few steam bent rings so far with each ring made with two steam bent semi-circles, left to dry out for a few days, then trimmed and glued together. I then stack 3 or more rings together with the joints staggered like a segmented shell so all the rings reinforce each other. So far it seems to be working quite well!

You sir are an inspiration. Steaming and bending drums shells in the kitchen. Now I know I’m not crazy for wanting to go and do the same.

You don’t screw around when it comes to “how to” videos! That’s great! I don’t know if you’ve seen the hybrid bearing edge that Guru Drums came up with, but I think it would make a noticeable difference on ANY drum and they purposely didn’t patent it so anyone can use it .Beautiful work by the way!

    10:31 ooooooh🤣.
I wanna try steam forming solid wood shells. It looks like a fun kind of PITA. Nice work!!

Your wife must have been ecstatic with how you've repurposed the kitchen. Haha.

Haha, I have a band saw in the living room too... Probably why I will never actually have a wife, lol!

this would be an excellent way to make RIMS type drum mounts

I see you make half shells. Do you make full shells too?

pretty cool, but have you considered mounting one of your end blocks permanently? instead of bending from the middle you slide the board into one end and then bend the full semi-circle from one side. that way you only have to worry about initially clamping the opposite side and not both sides at once.

You could also notch out the metal to then slip the clamps into, and then just pull the metal away when done.

It is a great to see him do it. But I am wondering. Why do you fiddle around so much? Why didn’t you just set it and be ready to set it? You had it clamped, then you took the off, then put them on, then took them off, then was not ready with the clamps, then one of the clamps are not functioning. Etc. it was kinda stressful to watch.
I was saying to myself.... Geez dude, hurry up and set it and leave it alone before it cools. Lol

Dude! Are you growing your hair out again? I'm really looking forward to seeing this project evolve. I like your band saw technique for segmented shells and I'm sure this will be just as enlightening.

Nah, it's about time the mane was cut again, I look like Grizzly Adams in this video, lol!

I remember your long, flowing, golden locks. That would suck to get caught in a lathe. You're probably better off with shorter hair.

Really? Half shells? Most steam bending is done in one piece of wood, not two. You don't have enough clamps, no ropes or cords, no peg holes around the form base. The form itself should have been a full circle, with a notch cut for the final over lap clamping. Where did you learn to do it this way?
PS: Just a thought, did you at one time make wood wagon wheels? It looked like you were bending a Felloe or an Ox Yoke. Maybe you used to make Windsor Chairs?

I've never done any steam bending before, just learning as I go. I've been building stave and segmented drum shells for a few years and this was my first attempt at doing steam bent shells. I decided to make the shells with 3 or more rings stacked one on top of the other like a segmented drum, with the butt joints staggered, rather than making the rings in one piece with scarf joints. This is just a little prototype and I already have one Oak shell that is looking good, just haven't finished it off yet. There is a picture of the shell on my Facebook page: facebook.com/MurrayDrums/photos/a.1933326976709853/1933329896709561/?type=3&theater
I will be doing more of this in future if I run out of orders for my segmented drums!
