  • I came across a 16mm film copy of "The Canadian."
I digitized it so I could post it on UA-cam.
The canister indicates that the film was printed for TV in 1864, but it was originally produced in1955.
The film had turned red over the years (vinegar), so I desaturated it to black and white.
    * This is only the first half of the film. If people are interested, I will post the rest later.
The film is an advertisement for the train that took passengers from Montreal to Vancouver.

Thank you for doing this film conversion. I think the 1964 label on the film can might be the date this print was made. The cars, buses, and 4-engine propeller plane make me think the date it was made is more like the mid 50s.

      I think you are correct.
A train friend sent me some information today saying this film was made in 1955.
      I will change the description!
      Thank you. 😀

Thanks for posting these videos Michael. My dad worked for the CPR. We would take the Canadian every summer from Calgary to Vancouver. This was back in the late ‘60s. Still a memorable experience for me. The spiral tunnels especially. If you were in the rear dome you could see the front part of the train exiting 90 degrees to you.

As someone who works aboard the Rocky Mountaineer train, it’s such a hoot to see what luxury train travel looked like 70+ years ago. We’ve come a long way since then. Thanks for posting, Mike!

This same train is still operating in the year 2024, run by Via Rail on the Canadian National Vancouver - Kamloops - Jasper - Edmonton -Saskatoon -Winnipeg - Sioux Lookout -Sudbury Junction - Toronto route. Using the former Canadian Pacific stainless steel rolling stock, as seen in this vintage promo film. Via Rail inherited the CP route train" The Canadian" on October 29, 1978 & Via operated this train on CP transcon route through Lake Louise, Banff, Calgary etc until January 15, 1990. Sadly, despite the train being popular, that Vancouver - Montreal Via Rail route on the CP line was discontinued, due to federal government budget cuts. On January 16, 1990 the former Canadian Pacific " The Canadian " stainless steel train was shifted to the CN Vancouver - Toronto route. It now operates twice a week from Vancouver to Toronto on the CN route.
