WOW! Me love this! Finally someone talks about stitching on paper. Theres not too many people that talks about this. I appreciate all the details you are giving. Thank you so much! I appreciate you!
Great run through of lots of basics. One thing I would add is for metallic threads to use a special needle, which is designed to cope better with its unusual texture
Ohhh thank you so so much for sharing this here, I did not know that you could get a special needle for the metallic thread and will definitely seek one out. I'd love to use them more and if I can avoid the frustration just by switching out my needle I'm up for that! The metallic thread texture is the weirdest thing ever.
Wow, what a fabulous video, Gwen! You put so many helpful tips for new paper seamstresses. Your layouts and mini albums are so beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing. 😊
Okay, you've confirmed my original thought; have a separate sewing machine just for paper sewing. Brilliant! and so is everything else as well, of course! Thank you 🙂
What a fantastic tutorial. It is very timely for me as I just bought a dedicated machine. I thought the exact opposite about the needle and thread, so your recommendation of thicker thread and stronger needle makes so much sense. Thank you.
Thank you so very much for making this video. It is such a big help. I have only tried machine stitching on layouts a couple of times. I mainly add hand stitching but that can be very time consuming. I think my biggest problem is I can be a bit afraid I machine stitching on paper but I think you guide here will help me with that. I do have a Janome Sewing Machine I actually purchased from Aldi just so I can use for my paper craft and it does seem to run well and only cost me $99. I do have a larger Jamone that I have had for many years but I just use that I have used to sew lots of clothes when my boys were small. It is about 34 years old now but I thought I would just keep that one for sewing fabric. Thank you also for showing us all your beautiful projects you have create with stitching. They are all amazing ideas.🙂❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hey Maree! I'm so glad this has been helpful and you're excited to give stitching by machine another try - I love the look of hand stitching but it does take a long time. What a great deal to pick up a machine for $99, Aldi is so so good isn't it! I am a big fan of Janome machines, they just last and last. It's always nice to see you by pop the channel and say hello 🌸
Exactly, I don’t think anyone else has given us a tutorial on how to get started. Thank you so much! Now, please do a video on, “Too much paper? Here are unique ways to hide it all over your home.” I’ve found a new place… suitcases. They are large and hold lots of paper pads… and they roll back and forth. Ha! Ha! (But I do use them!)😂😂😂. I’ve find myself looking forward to all your videos.😊
Aww Julie, this comment has made my day ☀️ This is EXACTLY what I was hoping for with this video. Stitching 101 for EVERY paper lover xoxox Thank you for your kind words.
THIS sure did make me giggle and smile, I'm so excited to hear that you look forward to my videos! Funniest thing too is that I have made one, well kind of - it's called "Too Much Pattern Paper" but it's more about organising than hiding. 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for popping by today lovely.
I'm so glad you added this info here Mary, I have no experience with the 'mini' machines but if anyone was going to make a good one it would be Janome... I really love their machines. Is it a handheld one? I'd love to know, I'm thinking now (after making this video) that mini machine and handheld ones are 2 different things.
@@CreatedByGwen No it’s not a hand held just a very (10 inch wide by 9 inches wide) small version of their regular machine (probably the simplest one..). I can change stitch length of straight stitch and zigzag stitch and thread tension. My foot peddle is so small I can actually press it using my hand…which works but I prefer to use my foot. It truly just looks like a small sewing machine ( Amazon carries it)…it was a birthday gift from my husband who saw it and thought I would like it for paper. It a sturdy machine, I have had it about 8 years and it still works great. The only issue is threading the needles is a bit awkward but once you do it a few times it gets easier. I am looking forward to trying the heavier thread just to see the difference. By the way I love that thread pulling trick…it works great and so much better than back and forth stitch.🥰
Thank you so much for sharing this extra info, it's SUPER helpful for others and me to know because I do get asked all the time about the smaller machines. At first I thought the handheld ones and 'small' ones were the same thing, clearly not and from what you're saying these smaller (but proper) machines could be a really great option. I love pulling the thread through rather than back and forth stitch, the look is so much cleaner. You can also tie them in a knot at the back if you want but I never bother with that. Thanks for popping by the channel today and sharing your experience with us all. I am super thankful for that. 🌸 @@marybethcully5883
This is an EXCELLENt tutorial, Gwen! You have given clear and thorough instructions. I have done some stitching on my cards and love the look. I tend to lean towards a bit wonky and leave the start and stop threads long. The tips about the thread and needle are very helpful. I have just been using what I have on hand so I will be looking for a heavier weight thread and needles. I will definitely save this video.
So so glad you found this helpful... I really like the look of the thicker thread and yes, wonky and natural and long threads for sure! Thanks for popping by today lovely 🥰
Aww thank you!! That's so good to hear, I was hoping that even the gals who had been stitching would still find this useful. Blessings to you too lovely 🥰
Cheryl, I have a regular sewing machine but I don't use it for scrapbooking as I don't have the space to set it up. I was thinking of getting a mini sewing machine just for papercraft. 👍
I would love to hear how those mini machines work because I've had no feedback or experience with them. I hope they would work, especially if they are $20-$30.
I put my needles for paper in a Rx bottle that is labeled “paper”. I save my older rotary blades also, and keep them in clear boxes, per size, and label them for paper also. Rotary blades and a Flex Curve ruler make great waves for ocean/beach scenes.
I just bought my first sewing machine today specifically for my scrapbook pages! Can't wait to bust it out of the box and give it a go! Thanks for the super helpful video and products!

Hi Gwen.. I bought the Silvercrest sewing machine with the intent of mainly sewing on paper. Yet my straight stitch does not look like a straight stich, but rather like a straight line with punctured holes in it. The manual suggests the upper tread tension is too high yet changing the settings does seem to make a difference. Any beginner mistake spring to mind like thread too thin for paper (I used the thread that was sold with the machine, not Gutermann) or the likes ? Thank you so much for your support. ♥
Hi there 🌷 If I had to guess I would have also said that the tension is too tight, but it's super hard to tell without seeing a picture of the stitches or your machine. Sometimes it is because your machine is not threaded correctly... there is a clip towards the top of the machine that holds the tension on the thread, maybe check step by step that it is threaded correctly according to your manual. The other thing I would do is ensure the bobbin (the bottom thread) is right way up, you can accidentally put it wrong way up and it will go in there but stitching won't be good. You could send me an email with pics if you like. Email is in my 'about' section.
Very helpful Gwen, thanks so much. I have a sewing machine but I bought one of those very small cheap ones from Aldi for paper but it got all knotted at the back. Any tips? I’ve saved this to check back in future.😊😊
Unfortunately with machines you do get what you pay for, so it could be that the machine is not working as it should. That may not be the case, a couple of other things to check come to mind. 1. Check that the bobbin is positioned properly, pay special attention to the position of the thread and how it feeds up through to the needle. 2. Check that the thread itself that you have put on the bobbin is threaded evenly, if it's bunched or uneven that could be affecting things. 3. Check your tension is not too loose, it may need tightening slightly (this would be my first guess at your problem - try this first).
Thank you Gwen. I sewed on a layout for the second time today and I’ve been scrapbooking for 20+ years. I learned after it was too late a lesson that when you turn the paper to sew from the opposite side to adjust of a strip. Am I making sense?
I'm so excited for you!! So glad you're giving it a go after all this time. I'm not entirely sure what you mean about stitching from the opposite side sorry :(
@@CreatedByGwen I think autocorrect got me at the end of the sentence. But…I was sewing on the left side of the strips then had to turn the paper. I sewed the next strip on the left then noticed I needed to sew on the right. I made the correction but one of the strips is not like the others lol. I just accepted it for how it was.
Great Vid Gwen! I have a question - do you sew through adhesive? Glue & tape? I know you sew through puffy stickers which do have glue on them. Does your needle get gummed up? I’ll check the link for the remover you mentioned in the vid.

Check your manual - sometimes the thread is feeding up to the needle the wrong way, pay special attention to that. 2. Check that the thread itself that you have put on the bobbin is threaded evenly, if it's bunched or uneven that could be affecting things. If I had to guess, it's the way the bobbin in positioned. I've been caught before too, thinking it was in correctly when in fact it was not right at all.
