Can’t believe I cried watching Rick cry about Carl. Woah. Great acting and emotion in this episode. You can tell Danai wrote this one. Both of them should finally get an Emmy for this episode.
Omg that moment made me cry me too. The fact that Michonne knew he was forgetting when the artist said he could never get it right for him, so she had him draw Carl bc she remembers him... it CRUSHED ME
Agreed! As soon as he said he still wasn't leaving when she asked him before she left I saw how anxiety he had and then Michonne said (in not so many words “so you're worried they could come after us someday so you're giving up so you can take a slim chance with the CRM by yourself?” I do believe the CRM is dangerous, but they've got him so scared that he doesn't even want to try and stop them. So sad, but man as someone who deals with anxiety I felt that. I get it. It sucks!
I think it’s time these two finally get nominated for their Emmy’s playing these characters. They’ve been deserved for a decade. This is my favorite episode so far. Spectacular acting, superb dialogue, beautiful character growth, and obviously some HEAVILY emotionally impactful moments that made me cry harder than I have in years with the franchise. This show is everything I was hoping for so far. I’ve missed this in TWD.
I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't, unfortunately. Whatever can be said about it, Star Trek: Discovery had some great acting in it, especially by Sonequa Martin-Green. That woman acted her butt off. Never saw acting nominations that I'm aware of. Star Trek: DS9 comes to mind regarding some great performers/performances as well throughout their run, but I don't recall acting awards or nominations there either. (I know it's not Star Trek, but those come to mind most readily because I'm a big fan.) But maybe it'll be different in this case! Because they're both great actors! Frankly, it'd be nice after seeing Danai act her butt off in Wakanda Forever too.
So I really appreciate that Danai didn't write in the obvious thing that she believed Michonne expected would bring Rich back. We all thought soon as he heard about RJ that he'd snap back into true Rick Grimes form. But instead Danai brilliantly writes in Michonne excavating the thing that broke Rick having to do with Carl. What a lovely way to bring Carl back into this story because their family in many ways started with Carl! It wasn't the expected moment we all thought it would be. To me, it was so much better and beautifully done. So many tears fell from my eyes! Wow. Well done Danai! 👏
I agree 100%. I feel like a lot of writers now do the obvious choice. It would’ve made their son seem like a cheap cop out or too soon of an immediate “fix it all” when relationships and decision making is more complicated than that. I had no idea she was a writer and she may have just inspired me to start back writing.
I totally agree. As much as we wanted Rick to snap back as soon as he heard about RJ, and as much as people wished Michonne would present him with a phone with RJ sketched on it, it makes much more sense for it to be about Carl. RJ is abstract for him right now. Carl is the one he has memories of and it broke him when he stopped dreaming of Carl. (This is nothing against RJ. It’s just facts - Rick obviously has no memories of him.)

Also willing to show her vulnerability when needed. But you've already said "damn strong", and she has to be _that_ to open up so much to the people she trusts. Beautifully portrayed, three-dimensional hero.
@@darkhclmeI have 50% disagreement. The writers in the og TWD made Michonne overshadowed by Rick and Daryl all the time. However, when it comes to consistency and character growth, I agree that it was well-written.
I love it when film actually tries to be a visual format. They didn't need to tell us that Rick isn't part of the CRM by words or exposition. They told us by seeing Rick in normal clothes the next day.
It feels like the building falling apart throughout the episode symbolized Rick fighting his inner demons. Then when the building finally fell apart it meant he figured out what he needed to do, what Carl would want him to do
Love that Greg pointed out the importance of getting to the truth. That was one of the things that pushed Danai's writing she has stated multiple times about this episode "if we don't get to the truth of these characters and this story then what is the point". she did not want to shy away or skirt around the traumas these characters have been through. Brilliant writing, this episode was the reckoning of a relationship of two people who had been apart for almost 8 years with mountains of trauma and I love that at every opportunity for a cliche narrative they swerved it. So well done
They have been due multiple awards for years now, The Walking Dead and their actors always gets snubbed from award season, with many times having them not even be nominated.
Oh my god. The best episode of the walking dead I’ve ever seen. No joke. I honestly cried in a few different scenes. The writing from her and their acting is just wow
“I hope this is taught like Shakespeare one day” is one of the best things I’ve ever heard a reactor say. 😊 I love watching you guys because you truly appreciate every element of the show. And you nailed it when you said “the walking dead” when Rick was describing himself finding a way to live while feeling dead.
The way I don’t cry at television, but cried when she handed that phone with Carl’s image on it 😭 😭. I still got teary watching you guys watch it. It was one of the most emotional episodes of tv I’ve ever seen
I set my alarm for the time it dropped and it was honestly one of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen. Raw, real, every single human emotion in one episode. This felt more real than anything I've ever watched.
I find it such good writing how Rick refers to Judith as Judith but doesnt mention RJ by name but instead says our son and him. Because he never knew RJ and saying someones name feels very personal like you know them. But he doesnt even know what the kid looks like so it feels wrong to say RJ as if he knows him
I noticed that too! And I feel like him trying to keep that distance at first was because he didn't want to get to know yet another person he would be afraid to lose. A callous person could have been like, "I don't know him, really." I feel like that's the rationale a lot of people who walk away from their family early on might use IRL. Like, they never got to know the kid, so they can't miss them/aren't involved (or only involved from a distance). Especially when they don't see the birth or leave before the child can start to recognize them.
Danai and Andrew, I hope they hold their heads up high in pride at the product they produced this episode. Absolute Cinema. The way Andrew showed Rick seeing Michonne's scar for the first time and realizing the love of his life had been in danger without his protection, so subtle. And the way he portrayed stockholm syndrom so genuinely... masterful. And Danai... dear god. The portrayal of a woman who lost a YEAR without knowing how her family is, still inhumanly pursuing a goal, just to achieve said goal and have it be the complete OPPOSITE of what you expect? She acted her ASS off. 11/10 episode. This episode belongs in the HOF of walking dead episodes.
The fact that they are playing South African music amaPiano at the end @24:00 , what a good reward of being a fan, love from South africa🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦 Ma sibe happy munt'wami translate to let's be happy my love 🥰🥰🥰🥰😂😂😂
I can’t believe Danai wrote this script, it was such a tear jerker I mean it really was from rick being at that door having to make a choice, saying it felt like his heart was being ripped out, and to Carl him saying what they did and then michonne giving him the phone, I was on the verge of crying during the entire thing I’m so shocked I didn’t, I need more of this I really do
I could actually FEEL my heart breaking when Rick broke down about Carl disappearing from his dreams. Andy and Danai deserve all the awards and Danai needs an award for writing. Absolutely magnificient episode.
Danai Gurira!! Say her name! Feeling so much admiration towards her for writing and starring in this and powering this show to a whole new level. What an incredible talent.
It's interesting that y'all mentioned it being like a play because Danai is a playwright. She was before being cast on TWD, actually, so that's the experience she was drawing on (aside from writing teleplays as well). ETA: They said she essentially showran the episode as well.
I was holding my breathe the whole time. I was so afraid he was going to go back and push the button. I cried so much when he finally broke down and told the real reason he was scared to go back. I just can’t wait for the reunions with the kids and hopefully Daryl at some point.
This might be a little to deep for this channel, but here i go. I have a friend who was really really deep into Scientology, a very dangerous and live destroying cult. I had, i think, over 15 conversations with him, trying to get him out. It was extremely difficult. It's a proces called "de-programming". it takes a lot of time and a lot of patience. I feel like this episode shows that RIck was basiclly stuck in a cult, for over 8 years, and Michonne trying to de-program him. This was a really heavy episode for me, but it was beautifully done. ( sorry for mistakes, i dont speak english very well )
I needed this show. Ill say it.. with my current injuries for over a year.. i have wanted to die.. and before that it had been a decade with 2 suicide attempts. This show has genuinely helped me grow.. Wars don't make peace.. Cinema does. and thats why i want to make cinema.. this feeling. the feeling of purpose and growth.. this show made me look in my past and remember parts of myself i thought long dead.. and i dont know how.. but i want to live now. even as lonely as ive been for over a decade.. i want to live now. the acting in this episode made me cry and feel human. good stuff (i noticed 2 editing errors.. but literally don't care haha) helped me locate a new found strength to get over my spine and shoulder injury no matter what so i can make cinema.
"Tough times don't last, tough people do." Stay strong, bro. I'm glad you're here to enjoy this show with us. Hope you create amazing cinema in the future 💙
As someone dealing with chronic pain from medical issues (I've had multiple major spine surgeries and need another one) and chronic depression from the pain and from abuse, I felt it so acutely when he said that he found a way to be dead and still live. Because I've been there more times than I'd like to think. But I keep fighting. So, that really hit me!
This was truly a masterpiece. From the lighting, the music, THE SCRIPT!!! Every time I thought I was done crying, my eyes just started watering all over again 😭 Danai Gurira is truly a MASTERFUL writer!!! I’m definitely going to tune in to every piece of are she produces in the future ❤ just WOW
"It's like a play" - Danai Gurira is an award winning playwright. I don't think she could escape it. But obsessed! She had me crying at 2 am *I hadn't watched the whole discussion yet but I really don't think there were other writers. Danai has said repeatedly that everything about this was her baby from the script to the edit and she argued whenever AMC gave her notes
Listening to your brotherly love reminds me why reactions are so special. Thanks for giving Danai Gurira credit for being excellent both behind and on camera.
I recently found out that from the beginning of the apocalypse to the bridge was only 4 years. So Rick has been away from Michonne longer than he even knew her which is crazy to think about.
Must have not watched a lot of TV huh LOL jk sorta but really tho -The shield -Breaking bad -Sons of anarchy - Game of thrones - The Walking Dead main series -Justified -True Detective S1 🤷♂️
Man, I also wonder if Michonne will be the one to kill Jadis now! This episode was pure art. So raw! I have never seen them this intense and emotional with each other. Thank you, Danai! ❤
What a phenomenal episode. Danai and Andy are amazing and obviously put 100% into this episode, as they have of course the rest of this series. Definitely my favourite thus far. Bravo.
Danai is a playwright. One of her plays “The Convert” was done here in Chicago (at the Goodman Theater) back in 2012, during her first couple of years on The Walking Dead. It did well too.
This is so real and deep of a show and standout episode. Great reaction and discussion from you both! This episode so parallels my relationship, 40 plus year marriage dynamics and current separation in so many ways. Super Heroes are real people with trauma and emotions mostly glossed over because they are forced to continue due to circumstances their badassary!
This was one of the best episodes of television and art I have ever seen. This is so beautiful and life affirming. Thank you both so much for your powerfully heartfelt and insightful discussion. Love this show and these two actors, love the Reel Rejects ♥️
I have watched a bunch of these reaction vids and yours is the first one to really expand and explore the emotional journey this episode was. Thank-you.
Show somehow keeps getting better, this might actually end up being the best season of TWDU. These last 2 episodes are going to be nuts!! Also, Morgan Rick reunion next week???
Danai should've written dialogue for the show all this time. Excellent writing giving Rick's mindset & the interactions between them for what comes next. 2 episodes left. 😬
The love, dedication, and commitment from the entire cast of the walking dead lead by these two. They truly give the best of their craft to the show. I was totally blown away at how the gentleman on the left in the glasses was spot on about recognizing what was going on with Rick as why he was behvinv the way he was. You guys are great reactors loving the duo great Job. As both of you had valid points as to why Rick might be acting the way he was. 🎉
Being a man shouldn't exclude you from expressing your feelings even if it's in the form of crying. Emotions, the full spectrum of them is a human experience. Men and women are humans no need to explain why you feel.
I love a hero who is strong and capable but completely in touch with their emotions. That's why some of my favorite characters of all time are Ellen Ripley, Okoye, Shuri, Captain Benjamin Sisko, etc. At the end of the day, they must still be human. They cannot be unstoppable bad @sses all the time. The audience has to have something to identify with while also having something aspirational. Both Rick and Michonne give that.
I just want to say that I've thoroughly enjoyed watching your fun, thoughtful & insightful TOWL reactions. Fun Fact Danai Gurira is a Tony nominated playwright for her 2016 Broadway play "Eclipsed" and has won many awards, ie Obie Award, for her many off-Broadway productions. I saw her Broadway production of 'Eclipsed' and the off-Broadway production of 'Familiar.' Danai was the show runner & writer for episode 4. Danai said she wanted to write the emotional reckoning episode & wanted to give Andy meaty material to work with. Andy said it was the largest amount of dialogue he ever had to learn for the show and I hope this series earns them both the accolades/awards they deserve as actors and creators of this series.
@@rhiannasanford6160Right! it really felt like the ending of a movie with hope. This show could have ended right there for me…open ended with hope and an outro song at movie end.
@@pjthrand2173 It was totally like a movie ending! And I feel the same. It could have ended there and I would be ok with it. Knowing they were off to go find their family together. But I know there's something else coming! Kind of nervous!
I haven’t seen much talk about it, but michonne changes outta CRM clothes almost immediately while Rick still wears his wet and probably cold gear pretty all the way until we see michonne “take it off him” in the love making and after we assume he changed into different clothes looking like good ol rick we know
This show so far is everything I've been waiting for and more. Each episode I have no idea what to expect. Each episode has been beautifully written and the acting is top tier. Seeing the flashbacks with Carl absolutely killed me. Even had me crying. This imo is the best walking dead has been in a very long time, and I've been watching walking dead since the start

I truly thought she was gonna have a pic drawn of RJ. But Carl!!!! I'm Not a softy or a cryer but Damn that got me choked up!!! Rick was absolutely broken and she got through. Great writing and phenomenal acting. Man these last 2 are gonna be 🔥🔥🔥
Beyonded out one of the best episodes I've ever seen from the walking dead. It was pure, versatile emotion. It took you on a journey showing you exactly what trauma they took from Rick. And then then you see the triumphant return. But it's not without you them earning it. They keep having to go back to the same cocoon and deal with what the real trauma of Rick is. And it's just so brilliant. written and acted. If they don't get an Emmy for this, I don't think those people deserve jobs anymore.
A cool parallel I realised while watching the show because I thought to myself "for him to get to that point he must have envisioned his own family being forgotten" and then I realised that the whole reason Andrew Lincoln left TWD in the first place was to be with his family. He left a place where he knew he had potential to go very far and have an even bigger impact than he already has had(bit of a weak link there but I'm confirmation biasing myself😂) just so he could be with his family because he knows that family is what really matters, if not for your family then for who is any of it for? In my heart that's partially what the show is about. Also when he says he just won't survive that, we know it's true cause we did see his unalive attempt.
What's interesting is that, in his interviews, including recent ones, they all (including him) talk a lot about the family they built on the show. So, after raising his kids (and now being seen as "uncool" by him, per his words), he can go and spend some time with his other family, encouraged by his blood family. It's lovely. He has two families he can enjoy. Just like those of us who have blood family and found families. It's lovely.
This made me cry to, very emotional. Every episode so far has been top notch. I started re-watching The Walking Dead from Season 1. I'm so glad I did. Knowing where they are now and getting to re-watch where it all began just gives the show soo much more meaning. I really hope they get some kind of recognition for this series. Well deserved!!

Absolute Televisual excellence!
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
It was a fantastic episode. They all have been. And the cinematography throughout this whole series has been brilliant!
@@RozzerMildred97I can totally see that. The colors and lighting is very BB/BCS like. The props always have meaning too. Roomba is Rick
Dani knows what we want out of Rick and Michonne's relationship and im so glad she wrote this because it gave me everything i needed!
Man.... Michonne is the best woman a man can hope to have in any tv universe lol. Shes so damn strong, loyal n smart as hell
I know she's incredible
Also willing to show her vulnerability when needed. But you've already said "damn strong", and she has to be _that_ to open up so much to the people she trusts. Beautifully portrayed, three-dimensional hero.
Michonne and Kim Wexler are the goats of women on TV shows
I would go as far as to say that Michonne might be one of the best written female characters of all time!
Then when the building finally fell apart it meant he figured out what he needed to do, what Carl would want him to do
And him not wearing his uniform anymore was also a good symbol of him leaving that behind and finding himself again
I think Rick is finally ready to go home and meat rj junior and reunite with his friends and family
Rj is rick junior@@autograph415

Love that Greg pointed out the importance of getting to the truth. That was one of the things that pushed Danai's writing she has stated multiple times about this episode "if we don't get to the truth of these characters and this story then what is the point". she did not want to shy away or skirt around the traumas these characters have been through. Brilliant writing, this episode was the reckoning of a relationship of two people who had been apart for almost 8 years with mountains of trauma and I love that at every opportunity for a cliche narrative they swerved it. So well done
Andy and danai deserve those actings noms, danai should get one for writing as well, this episode was amazing
The moment he mentioned Carl, I broke down. Man, this was truly a beautiful episode.
And yes. I love that they didn't rush tje grieving process.
Andrew & Danai deserves not just an Emmy Nomination... But an actual award for their performance.
Especially Rick's Confessing Scene😢
Agree!
I agree
Absolutely LOVED Discussing This Episode! Do You Think These 2 Actors Deserve An Emmy Nomination?
Hell yeah
They have been due multiple awards for years now, The Walking Dead and their actors always gets snubbed from award season, with many times having them not even be nominated.
Oh yea especially Andrew Lincoln is a crime he doesn't have it yet, he should it got 1 when Season 7 came out
Yesssss
Yes! It’s long over due. I actually got choked up and I remembered I had a heart when they were talking about Carl. 😂
Oh my god. The best episode of the walking dead I’ve ever seen. No joke. I honestly cried in a few different scenes. The writing from her and their acting is just wow
The acting….the WRITING….speechless. Michonne gave Rick back one son and a new one ♥️♥️♥️
Seeing Rick cry when talking about how he cant see Carl in his dreams broke me.
Honestly, if Rick dies, if Michonne dies or they don’t get to reunite with the kids people are gonna riot!
Big spoiler

“I hope this is taught like Shakespeare one day” is one of the best things I’ve ever heard a reactor say. 😊 I love watching you guys because you truly appreciate every element of the show. And you nailed it when you said “the walking dead” when Rick was describing himself finding a way to live while feeling dead.
The way I don’t cry at television, but cried when she handed that phone with Carl’s image on it 😭 😭. I still got teary watching you guys watch it. It was one of the most emotional episodes of tv I’ve ever seen
I've never had such an emotional response to an TWD episode before....this was amazing!
I set my alarm for the time it dropped and it was honestly one of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen. Raw, real, every single human emotion in one episode. This felt more real than anything I've ever watched.
Danai was also show runner on this episode.
You said it perfectly!!!
The king and queen are back and on the run.
Absolutely magnificient episode.
rick seeing the roomba is one of my favorite scenes
The way he says "wtf"

It reminded me of breaking bad when Jesse's friends freaked when they saw it, then Walt later asks what it is.
Hilarious Old Man Rick moments.
Ricks scene talking about Carl and Michonne. I fully sobbed. I really did and i dont say that lightly.
The frustration towards Rick Michonne was going through...I really felt it.
I never imagined that this show would be THIS good. Actual Art.
I was holding my breathe the whole time. I was so afraid he was going to go back and push the button. I cried so much when he finally broke down and told the real reason he was scared to go back. I just can’t wait for the reunions with the kids and hopefully Daryl at some point.
they both made me cry in this episode, and likewise the walking dead never hits me that hard. just absolutely amazing, and so emotional and perfect.
( sorry for mistakes, i dont speak english very well )
CRM definitely gives cult vibes. Especially with Scientology and the “secrets” that most ppl are not allowed to know
You wrote that beautifully. Thank you for sharing and thank you for staying strong and being a guiding light for your friend.
THIS EPISODE WAS INSANE!
I needed this show.
Ill say it.. with my current injuries for over a year.. i have wanted to die.. and before that it had been a decade with 2 suicide attempts.
This show has genuinely helped me grow.. Wars don't make peace.. Cinema does. and thats why i want to make cinema.. this feeling. the feeling of purpose and growth..
this show made me look in my past and remember parts of myself i thought long dead.. and i dont know how.. but i want to live now. even as lonely as ive been for over a decade.. i want to live now.
the acting in this episode made me cry and feel human. good stuff (i noticed 2 editing errors.. but literally don't care haha)
helped me locate a new found strength to get over my spine and shoulder injury no matter what so i can make cinema.
No joke I cried watching the Carl scene again while watching your reaction. Holy freaking cow. This show is gold.
That Carl moment comeplety broke me, I think more than the Glen scene. One of the most beautifully written moment I've ever see
When the gunshot goes off, Rick flinches and puts his hands over his face - I lost my shit.
She had me crying at 2 am
*I hadn't watched the whole discussion yet but I really don't think there were other writers.
The acting of Andrew and Danai is superb
It's truly the best episode of TV I've ever seen, and im 38.

Bravo.
The emotion these actors are feeling without saying a word shoots through the tv screen! Amazing acting.
She wrote this and did that shit. It was so raw and real. The respect dor the relationship you can see from everyone involved
This was one of the best episodes of television and art I have ever seen. This is so beautiful and life affirming. Thank you both so much for your powerfully heartfelt and insightful discussion. Love this show and these two actors, love the Reel Rejects ♥️
This was a great episode! Very emotional and the topic of Carl really hit me in the feels 😭😕.
When she handed him the phone with Carl’s picture, I fully sobbed. What a phenomenal episode.
It felt like a play cause Danai is an award nominated (can remember if she won) playwriite.

I have watched a bunch of these reaction vids and yours is the first one to really expand and explore the emotional journey this episode was. Thank-you.
Nah that Rick and Michone hallway fight scene was just a turning point for TWD
I absolutely love these actors and this universe 🧟☠️☠️🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟🧟
The Walking Dead has not made me cry in years, but this episode made me weep and I'm a grown ass man. One of THE BEST episodes of The Walking dead.
I can't name a single human emotion that wasn't perfectly represented by this episode.
Well said. 👏
Rick Grimes is my favorite character of all time. A masterpiece episode. Everything I ever wanted and more
Amazing episode. Danai Gurira is a legend
Michonne is the first person to bring somebody back from being “the walking dead”
Stunning episode. God Rick broke my heart😢
