Mexican jumping beans are known by anglos because they are pretty common in Northern Mexico (Sonora and Chihuahua), along the border with the US. I think they are essentially a kind of seed pod that some moth larvae settle in, and when they react to the warmth of a human hand, they move. Karl, however, was in Yucatán, which is that peninsula in the south, so that's probably why they haven't heard of it. Btw, at 36:36 Did Stephen say that Karl was going to meet some of the *ancestors* of the Mayans? What? Surely he meant descendants, right? Is that a common thing for English speakers to confuse, or?
No. Stephen just fumbled his words, which if you've listened to the XFM radio show that he, Ricky, and Karl hosted back in 2001, you'll know that he does that _a lot._ He's a very anxious and self-conscious person, which has a tendency to make him use the wrong words for things while being filmed or recorded.
What Karl is referring to is a for want of a better word a toy we had in the UK. It's basically a small ball bearing inside a capsule that moves due to gravity, giving it the appearance it is moving on it's own.
Karl's 'Pancake Tuesday' is Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday - basically Mardi Gras, but our version is eating lots of pancakes - traditionally to use up rich foods / ingredients before Lent. Our pancakes are more like crepes than American pancakes
The noise thing, referred to as the Chichen Itza Chirp is supposed to mimic the sound of the quetzal bird. The bird being connected to one of their gods. Its assumed that it is the stairs causing it, causing the sound waves of the claps echo to get bounced about. Being so long ago noone knows if it was intentional or not. Historians have said that the priests would clap and say the noise was them communicating with their god

Mexican jumping beans are a thing. I think they're seasonal though, because the beans themselves have a season, then towards the end of the season a particular bug lays eggs in the beans, and once the larva get to a certain age, they hatch out of the bean like an egg. The Easter bunny is known in the UK, but it's possibly just a US import as it's not really used, seen or mentioned much. It's all about the chocolate Easter eggs here.

I remember when I was about 15 going to East Germany as part of a European camping holiday and when I crossed the border into the communist East it was like I'd walked into a black and white movie. Everything was grey, even the grass. There was a fine dust on everything including our car after one day parked in a camp site. The town we visited was like a time trip back to the 40's and not in a good way, everywhere else looked like a half finished building project. There was a shop there that had a pushchair with a doll, both second or third hand and nothing else in the window. The difference between West and East Germany was astounding and at that time they had only been split for about 30 years.
@@MandyCaneLane The old town is gorgeous, we did take a walk to one of the oldest chocolate factories in Europe, and the museum, once we left the old town the landscape changed drastically, We actually walked past the old KGB operations centre, and after that a lot of the buildings just looked so grey and run down. It certainly did not feel like a place you would want to be late at night. Although I must say everyone we met was wonderful it just weird to go back in time like that.

I went to a rodeo once on Oregon and I found out that the reason the bulls and horses kick and behave like that is that their testicles are tightly bound with rope. 26:17 If I’m not mistaken those are the fireworks from that Harry Potter IRL video, people using them in the street at each other and it legitimately looks like a magic battle. 😂
When Christianity was first introduced in England they incorporated a lot of the pagan beliefs to make it more acceptable so mid winter solstice where people had a big feast and invited the wood spirits into their homes for good luck became Christmas and that's why you have holly , mistletoe , yule log and Christmas trees ! Easter adopted the pagan festival of fertility where it was believed hares who don't live in burrows like rabbits but sleep in tufts of grass and would run away when someone aproached , and it was believed at the time they layed eggs because the nests of ground nesting birds were mistaken as the nests of hares or the easter bunny and the egg ! And you just heard that from another bald Salfordian / Manc so you can't tar us all with the same brush !
JC died on the Friday and was raised on the Sunday. Except that it was hijacked from the Pagan festival of Oestra which celebrates the start of Spring and fertility, hence the bunnies and the eggs. Hard to let go of Pagan festivals when there is money to be made from it. Personally I'd rather celebrate the start of Spring when all the plants, veg and trees are starting to get green shoots than celebrate a fella getting nailed to a cross and dying.
I must say I was very chuffed when I got the notification of another Idiot Abroad video 🫶 I remember watching this series when it was first aired, and watching your reactions to them is so much better than seeing them the first time around! What you described at the beginning is how I just watched your reaction haha. I kinda got Karl at the end, he didn't really enjoy the things that he did but really liked the general vibe of the place. It looks fun there and far less stressful than England so I got that he would want to live there at least for little while and take a break from here. Oh and i'm so familiar with the phrase 'Mexican jumping beans' too but I don't fully know what they are. I think they were in a cartoon with Speedy Gonzalez, these tiny little things bouncing around everywhere. Hi I haven't been in Argentina since 2011, but found Salta different from most other towns,. Salta had a well kept colonial style center, probably the nicest I saw in the country.
I have heard the word Easter comes from the Roman goddess Ishtar who was a fertility god hence the eggs and rabbits. The bean is a little pod where a moth larvae burrows inside, it jumps around like a little jumping bean.
Ishtar is a Mesopotamian goddess, not a Roman one. The Romans had several gods of fertility, including Bona Dea, Fecunditis, Inuus, Liber, Mena, Picumnus, and Venus. The word Easter comes from the Old English word "Ēostre". The English referred to the month of April as Ēosturmōnaþ, which means "Month of Ēostre". Ēostre was a West Germanic spring goddess who was celebrated around April. Like many Christian traditions within Western and Northern European cultures, Easter as a holiday borrows quite a lot from old Germanic pagan beliefs.

I think his dancing is based on Bez from Happy Mondays - a band from around where Karl grew up. (They had a stage dancer who got kind of famous on his own) If you search youtube for 'happy mondays werchter 1991' there's a perfect clip of his classic 'dance'
Pancake Tuesday = Shrove Tuesday and yeah, pancakes are the food for the day. More like crepes than the pancakes you'd know though.
Perfect timing! I was hoping you had some new Karl up and 18 minutes ago it became so!
🙌🏻
The Easter bunny is known in the UK, but it's possibly just a US import as it's not really used, seen or mentioned much. It's all about the chocolate Easter eggs here.
When I was younger and in the states. There were chocolate easter eggs and bunnies. The bunnies were the yummiest because they used some kind of special recipe that you couldn't get any other time of year... or at least that is how I remember it 😅😅
You're so positive and happy keep them coming!
Thank you!! I will! 🤗🤗
You've never seen the seagulls we have in Britain their absolutely huge wouldn't surprise me if it did pick up the dog and fly out to sea
I was in Margate and they have special heavy duty, hessian refuse sacks to stop them tearing them apart!
😮
Urban myth, It didn't happen. A bird of prey like an eagle, yes but not a seagull. I think a few people are confusing two different stories a one.
@@1funkyflyguyyou can literaly search up seagull picks up dog and there's loads of articles about it we literaly have the biggest seagulls in the world the seagulls that live on the sea fronts In this country are abnormally large

"Why is he in the most embarrassing outfit?" - The answer to this question is Ricky. =D
😂😂😂😂
lmao Karl runs like an NPC
100%!!! 😂😂😂
I used to get Mexican jumping beans when i was a kid. You could get them out of those plastic containers in the bubblegum machines.
Never seen one, just like Karl. Lol
A time trip back to the 1940s in Germany and not in a good way?
My wife and I just spent a week in Riga, Latvia, some parts of the city feels exactly like stepping into a Soviet movie.
Crazy how so little distance can make such a big difference!
It's cute that you have a crush on Karl Pilkington of all people lol
Lol, I never said I did.. haha. Just find him funny and oddly relatable 😅😅
@@MandyCaneLane I know lol. Just teasing.
Pickled onion crisps are the dog's bollocks (a strange British idiom meaning the best), try some pickled onion monster munch if you get the chance. Loved the reaction as always, keep up the good work young lady!
Ok, I started reading that totally in the opposite direction 😅😅😅
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm so happy you're doing these and you appreciate it as much!
Thank you so much Jonathan! 🤗🤗
As the Spanish say frijoles saltarines or Mexican Jumping Bean is not generally eaten because there might be the Larva of a small Moth inside. It's the movement of the small moth that makes it appear to jump. Very Good Reactions to a Good Episode.
I loved this one! 🤗🤗
Karl is very kind hearted, think he doesn't really know that the things he sometimes says aren't that nice like at 32:21😅 This one was the funniest so far😂 Simpy love your reactions and the laughs aswell!
I had so much fun watching this! I think it might have been my favorite so far!! 🤗🤗
These uploads always come at the perfect time I love it.

Love the Joey reference at the end. 😅

I imagine Ricky was struggling to breathe from laughter while he was watching all these 🤣 And great Friends reference "JOEY DOESN'T SHARE FOOD!" 🤣
😂😂
Yet another great reaction Mandy, when you watch Karl, for me, it's like watching a child opening a present on Christmas morning... I smile and laugh with you every time.. ❤
Hahaha, I am so chuffed you enjoy! 🤪🤗
@@MandyCaneLane 'chuffed'!!! you've been listening to Uk shows for too long..... and the 'alrights' haven't gone unnoticed either 🤣🤣
I had jumping beans.. they did actually jump when warm. Maybe a tactic for the larvae to escape the heat to not overheat and die. Eventually they'd burrow out and there'd be a tiny hole in the shell and 1 heartbroken kid 😂.
You make everything better that the original. Love you. Thanks 🙂
Lmao Mark! Thank you for sharing!! 🤗🤗🤗
If the UK is the only place he has ever seen Mexican jumping beans then maybe he should have been looking for them in the UK 🤣
Lmao! You make a very good point Gary 😂😅
@@MandyCaneLane The irony is that it is Karl who should have been making that point lol
The mighty Karlos Pilkington😅🦸♂️
The seagull story is true!
I am shocked 😮🤪
Don't drink the water in Mexico, but can you drink the water in Argentina? Also you can pause the video as much as you like we all want to hear your thoughts on Karlito
Lmao! Depends where you are in Argentina. Main cities and towns is usually fine, but some places near the beaches the water is a big no no! 😅😅
I remember Mexican jumping beans at school and eating the worm it was much bigger than Karl's I was sick mainly lots of dequila before though
😖😵
I went to a rodeo once on Oregon and I found out that the reason the bulls and horses kick and behave like that is that their testicles are tightly bound with rope.
After the cowboy is thrown off, two cowboys on horses, one on each side pull the rope that releases the balls. Some people PAY for that treatment 😀
Disgusting animal cruelty. Not funny in the slightest.
@@1funkyflyguy yes and I know its not a competition but bullfighting takes the biscuit on that front. Every time I hear of a bullfighting getting the spiky horn of consequence, it makes me smile 😃

Karl wrote a few books on these travels. Reading them will answer many of your timing questions. Plus if you like the show then the books give so much more insight! :)
Karl WROTE BOOKS? 😮
I remember a cartoon when I was very little with a bear who had a Mexican jumping bean that kept causing him trouble.
The bean had a sombrero!

I would like to try Monster Munch 🤪
Morning luv.
Poor Karl lad just wants to be comfy at home.
Apparently, not a chance 😂
There’s never a dull moment here, we had Alan Whicker/Michael Palin in the uk 🇬🇧 travelling the world 🌎 and were excellent shows. They were more serious than this however, and never had to do what was required of Karl. Eggs are a symbol of new life, and love how you say ‘chuffed’

If I’m not mistaken those are the fireworks from that Harry Potter IRL video, people using them in the street at each other and it legitimately looks like a magic battle. 😂
Lmao!!! Expelliarmus! 🤪
I'm really enjoying your reactions to Karl. As for the comments, they're just what every good reaction video needs - added content!
Thank you! 🤗🤗
I hate Spring! So many allergies 😭😭
she reminds me of boxxy so much
I have no idea who that is 🤷🏻♀️

I gotta say. I think you are one of the real best reactors to karl. Top 2 😉
Lol, thank you
I must say I was very chuffed when I got the notification of another Idiot Abroad video 🫶
I remember watching this series when it was first aired, and watching your reactions to them is so much better than seeing them the first time around! Your commentary on how things are similar to Argentina is like having a little window into your life and being able to experience some of the culture 🙂
Thank you for the laughter Mandy ❤️ hope you're feeling better after the allergies and asthma ❤️
Aww, that is so sweet! Thannk you so much Andy!! I am proper chuffed you enjoyed 🤪🤗🤗
What you described at the beginning is how I just watched your reaction haha. I got myself set up with a cup of tea and some chocolate biscuits while its quiet and I knew I wouldn't be disturbed and almost made it like an event. I wasn't disappointed, this was soooo freaking good. I think it's my favourite episode from the season and you add so much to it too. The moment with the bees is maybe the funniest moment for me from the whole show and it was awesome to see you loving it too lol. I think you laughed more in this episode than anything i've seen you react to.. well maybe. You always laugh a lot with Karl. You totally nailed "wonder" in a Manc accent, made me think of the song Wonderwall cuz the band Oasis are from Manchester too.. don't know if ur familiar with that song or the band. Oh and I didn't miss you saying fuck under your breath hahaha, don't know if u realised you did that. I had to replay it cuz I was like, did she just say fuck. I'm sure soomebody has explained them but I want them to stay like a magical thing in my mind so I don't want to find out lol. I'll stop talking now.. i'm a bit like you in that way. Can't stop once i get going 🙃
Lmao Daniel! I am so chuffed you enjoyed!! 🤪 And I loved this episode! Might have been my favourite so far!
And I am trying not to swear and be a proper lady but sometimes the best word to describe something is a swear word 😅😅😅
Also the bee part was so random!! 😂😂😂
@@MandyCaneLane Hahaha you're becoming a true Manc 😋 and ur doing a good job at being a proper lady too because the swearing did seem a bit out of character. Looking forward to more Karl reactions already but keep taking your time and finding a good moment for you 😊
Bunnies have to be bigger than the eggs. How else would they lay them?

Hi I haven't been in Argentina since 2011, but found Salta different from most other towns,. Salta had a well kept colonial style center, probably the nicest I saw in the country.
Interesting, never been there 🤗
I have heard the word Easter comes from the Roman goddess Ishtar who was a fertility god hence the eggs and rabbits.
