The cane either spins around your wrist, or your palm forward of your thumb, or your thumb itself. So then:
When it spins around your wrist, you can convert that into spinning around your thumb or spinning around your palm.
If it's spinning around your palm that's horn-down on your right hand and horn-up on your left.
If it's spinning around your thumb that's horn-up on your right and horn-down on your left.
Seeing that there are these different axes of rotation made it much easier to for me to get what's going on here.

Other than an exercise I have never found a reason to twirl my cane when used in defensive mode

Horn swinging is for decoration. Looks good and you might get up some speed but you aren't going the stop anyone whose rushing in. Personally I don't use it for that reason.

It's a good drill but not fight friendly. It is a good way to get familiar with the cane and how to use it in a comfortable way but in the a stress situation I wouldn't change direction this way. All the best. Chris

Chris Bird Sorry Chris, Not seeing it. A good drill for what. Swinging by the horn has no benefit for conditioning so what is it giving you. If you want conditioning exercises using a stick then Silambam exercises give more benefit for time spent or Kali exercises for single stick but using the walking stick. Personally I use a Blackthorn stick as my EDC although I have some crooked sticks as well. Started with walking stick in 1979 when I was doing HapKiDo but over the years I’ve carried on training but gravitated to impact either single or double handed as my preferred usage so don’t have much use for the crook.

Exactly. It may be good for acrobatic dance routines, but it has no place in a defensive situation. A thug with a stick will wait until the stick is on the back swing of the figure eight to launch is attack. The cane can more easily be knock out of ones hand since the figure of eight requires a loose grip to swing it. I am curious how many times the instructors have actually been in a serious cane fight and what was the opposing weapon. These dance moves are easy to choreograph when everything is calm, but for those few 45 seconds of adrenaline rush, basic stick fighting knowledge is crucial. A good grip on your weapon is vital. For more coordination and exercise with a spinning stick, one may want to add skipping on one's feet while doing a figure of eight. With skill, one can then incorporate a simple nursery rhyme to the routine.

May you never accidentally catch yourself in the junk. Was messing around with my practice nunchucks a few days ago... Still kinda get the urge to dry heave when I think about it.
