My grandma, an apache from San Carlos/AZ, said she remembers that as a girl, her grandfather (who was a medicine man) told her stories about how back in the day, the medicine man would journey all day to the mountains and retrieve the "Crown Dancers" from there then bring 'em all back to perform these ceremonies at camp all night before the medicine man would eventually lead 'em back to the mountains from whence they came before sunrise :O creepy yet fascinating lore and stuff.....
I thank the Person that video taped this and hope that the young Woman in this Ceremony becomes a STRONG WOMAN....I am only a " OUTSIDER" not even American at that.... but you have such a BEAUTIFUL and STRONG Heritage that stayed Strong through out all the wrong doing that was done by us " the OUTSIDER". MAY IT STAY ALIVE FOR MANY MANY YEARS TO COME and MAY YOU STAY PROUD AND STRONG BY TEACHING AND GIVING IT ON !!!!
The dancing and singing is awesome. People coming out early in the morning, that's dedication? Seeing the little ones dancing off to the left Awesome. One day I (Navajo)hope to see the Sunrise Dance.
I knew the late Ryan Burnette, I had Harris Burnette for my daughter's ceremony, Family members sing/dance for Bert Hinton, we have Harold and Basil Kenton as family members, my uncles all sang and danced. We celebrated with them, for them, but it all comes to, what it means to you and how you want it to be sacred. We are proud of who we are and where we come from. Our culture is our pride, our respect comes with dignity and unity. Sacred or not, the ceremony continues! come one, come all!!
One last post, I love this video, IT'S MY FAMILY!!! Love you lots and hope we get to video another one and post it online. Thanks for all the comments and for the others who live off the rez, like me, this is a joy to see whenever I get homesick!!! It was good and it was a beautiful ceremony from the beginning to the end! GOD BLESS!!!!
IN THE OLD DAYS, we use to walk to another's camp and exchange gifts, the gifts were simple household items, things handmade, just to show appreciation and gratitude for the ceremony. Now we use trucks, cars, buy store bought items, buy big screen t.v's, game consoles, make tons of quilts, tons of food, because you know other people will be looking at you and see what you got to give. JUST TO OUTDO ONE ANOTHER, it has come to this point. A COMPETITION, now where did SACREDNESS go? hmmm, I wonder
i am so honored and humbled at the opportunity to find this and share in the spirit thank you so much!!!!! reminds me what i am here for!!! red pride!!
reading comments, the negativism is your way to not enjoy something. I enjoy all this and see a blessing in it for me. I may not be apache but i am dineh. The "fire water" came from the 'lost guys' who claim to have discovered america. They forget we were here first. Blessings & Stay Strong n tradition and culture. ,;~)) and this is only my second comment
A long time ago, just about everything we did was SACRED. Dances were plain and simple, used natural plants, used the basic necessities. 2010 comes around and at sunrise dances that are suppose to be sacred are not anymore. From giving a feather/stone to the godparents, it's suppose to be a secret, unexpected and unplanned. But now, we use the internet, phone, notes, and we tell them ahead of time! The crowndancers identity is suppose to remain a mystery.
This video is part of a four day ceremony of an apache girl who is having a puberty ceremony. We call it a sunrise dance. This is saturday night when she dances with the crown dancers. The other girls, one is her dancing partner, and a close friend, the other two girls come from the god parents side. People from the community and visitors come to watch this part of the ceremony because of the crown dancers.
I live in United Kingdom and i interesting in native american culture, this video showing me something amazing. Not everybody can go to america to see this live.I understand some ceremeonies might be sacred and not dispayed for everyone. But I appreciate for let me watch this on you tube.Best regards
now we proudly yell out their names when they dance by. We use materials that are very easy to use, easy to purchase and easy to assemble. When "purchasing" items for the crown, we go to the store! we use store bought paint, mirrors, use a sewing maching to sew the headpiece, use the sewing maching to sew the moccasins and skirts. And we use dye purchased at the store dye our moccasins from white to yellow.
Dancers in the parade have a different meaning, This is a dance that is done with a lot of prayers. We need to be careful how much we share. I like to share my culture also but i know there are things that i can share with the outside and things that i can't and if we dont keep it sacred, it will never be sacred any more. Gaan are blessing and the blessing have to be respected in every way. I was told when i was little, that the dancers are like angles and we should respect them.
I miss home. Theres times and parts of this ceremony that you can video and take pics and theres times that you can't. So respect that. When you disprespect a rattle snake it will bite back at you...the same if you dis respect our ways it wil bite back at you and even kill you. Please respect.
I've always wanted to attend one of these.... but I wonder if Navajos are allowed at these... I dont mean to disrespect them.. so I guess it's by invitation only... I love the disclaimer --->>>> hahahah nice one
I just find out I was going to dance behide the crown dancers yesterday. And am so excited and scared because this is my first time. I just had a massage. And am so scared and excited!!!
lovegame29's grandpa is absolutely correct. It is a coming of age ceremony. It might be creepy or gross to small-minded individuals, but in all actuality, sex is a part of life. It is how we reproduce and continue the human race. We are losing our traditions because of people with that same negativity and disrespect. I had a sunrise dance and I am very proud of it. :)
@jessialynnn.....NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY, YOU AINT GOIN CHANGE A THING. BOTH FAMILIES KNOW ABOUT THIS ON UA-cam AND HAVE NO COMPLAIN ABOUT IT, THEY ENJOYING LETTING PEOPLE SEE THEIR DANCE. IM APACHE AND PROUD TO SHOW TO OTHERS WHAT OUR CULTURE IS AND CEREMONY.
What is wrong with sharing and being proud of your cultural heritage? At least you know who you are have a proud tradition. Where is the shame in that? America and the world respects the Apache nation. It is time they started respecting themselves as they once did.
@Trony0267 This wasn't always a public show for the world to see. My grandparents told me that this WAS only done for our people. Now its done for the world to see. But still I exist. I am Apache. I don't need videos to prove this by posting vid like this so the outside world knows. Usen(god) knows we are here.
i know this is not suppose to be recorded but its qood seeinq ahh' sunrise dance!(: i miss those!! but im san carlos!!(: (sarcasticly) not white river, san carlos !!! xD mahh sisterr was ahh' partnerr andd its so expensivee, andd funn!:D
@azapache2006 i understand wat ur sayN but i dnt think we all gta show our sacred cultureZ. TherZ jus certain thingZ that gta stay between us. itZ wat kept us here on Earth. sad cuz now alotta ppl are jus losing that tradition or they expose it n use it n an ignorant way.
I dont like seeing videos like this online. If people want to view native ceremonies then come to the rez and see it for yourself. Then you can be educated about our native cultures.
WELCOME TO THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION....QUIT UR BITCHING AND DEAL WITH REALITY......NO MATTER IF I DO IT OR SOMEONE ELSE RECORDS.....JUST ACCEPT IT. FOR SOME........ITS THEIR ONLY WAY TO SEE HOME N LISTEN TO THE APACHE SONGS.
If you wanna justify yourself by whining around about how everybody else doesn't revere/respect their culture/traditions and its sacredness. Then why are you participating in with those people anyway? Why are you not trying to correct those people? Or better yet trying to help preserve Apache culture/traditions by, um idk, not stooping down to other peoples disrespectful & coveting behaviour?
