Loved Cybernary so hard when I was a kid. Thanks for reminding us of the magic of Nick Manabat's work. Did not know he passed. 😢

I was so blown away by Nick's work that you showcased. So I looked him up on the web. When I saw he had passed my heart sank. So incredibly young and so talented. A tragedy. I'm thankful that he blessed us with his talent for the short time he had. Rest in peace.

Thanks Jim and Ed for reminding us how amazing the late great Nick Manabat's art is. Thanks for not letting it fade. Back in the mid-90s, when i was enrolled in a comicbook making class, we met Whilce and Nick's dad -they're friends, and Nick had passed two or three years before. One story Nick's dad told us was when Nick was confined and word got out during one of the conventions in the US, his idols visited him at the hospital. Among the visitors i remember him mentioning was Simon Bisley, whom he described as a large biker-type guy. We also visited Nick's house and were shown the massive collection of inspirational artboooks that fueled his imagination and talent.

From my country, Chile, in the mid 90s I asked for comics via catalog and when I saw the Deathblow magazine I found that work by Cybernary. I loved the style and when I read that its artist had died from that sad illness it made me very sad. almost my age. To this day I remember his name and artistic legacy.

Man, his work makes me want to draw so bad! What incredible, advanced stuff at such a young age. What a loss.

Great video lads! Like most when I was a kid I picked this up for Jim Lee's Deathblow and stayed for Nick Manabat's Cybernary. Blew my mind as a kid and still does to this day.

It is amazing how you described his work exactly how I remember it. I was excited to get Jim Lee's Deathblow but quickly forgot about it when I was introduced to Nick Manabat's work. My mind was blown. His work was visionary and has influenced me in my work. I was also was into the dark late 80's early 90's anime and his work paralleled these movies. Broke my heart when I read what happened to him. Great content and video. KUDOS!

Whilce and Filbar's (a favorite local comic shop) organized a drawing contest when he went to the Philippines. Together with many aspiring comic artist, teenage mediocre me joined and obviously lost. It was a humbling but also a proud moment. The winner was Nick Manabat. RiP. Gone too soon.

Wow, my goodness.. I had never heard of Nick until now. Watching this really hits home that u never really know when your time is up on this Earth, and its clear that Nick Manabat drew like there was no tomorrow on these pages. Phenomenal draftsmanship from such an early age as an artist.
Hugely talented yet very driven to draw comics. I have no doubt that he would've improved his eye for visual storytelling, and pace his work better as time went by.
I can only imagine how he would've matured as a comic book artist. So it is bittersweet seeing the huge potential in a lifelong career that was left here... .. .
Anyway, thanks for shedding light on this work fellas!
Keep spreading the word on the underdogs of the comic world!

I faintly remember this as a kid, so thanks for bringing it back around. That black and white art is insanely good. It's the kind of stuff that makes you want to give up ever attempting drawing because it's so good.

Jewels like this get lost in the total non-sense that was Image comics in the 90s. I have the Deathblow books (at least the first one) at my parent's house and I haven't picked it up since I first bought it. When I was digging through my collection a few months ago I skipped over it, assuming it was just more Image fluff. Now I need to grab it next time I'm over there! Thanks guys!

A comic called Deathblow; where 3 of the creators of the book died too early. Gerber, Sale and the great Nick M.

Manabat's art has elements of what I was seeing coming out of England in the 90s-- Marvel UK, 2000 AD, etc. But there was some of Jae Lee's stuff.
I had heard about Manabat and Cybernary, but don't remember seeing any of it on the shelves at the time.

One of the most looked at books in my collection. Nick's art inspires and I think the art in Deathblow was Jim's best work. Worthy of an artist edition.

Whilce Portacio and Filbars comics at Robinson's Galeria held a contest to draw a character and possibly get it published. I saw Nick Manabat's entry, it was called "Musang" (Philippine wild civet cat) and everyone there knew he's going to win. It was amazing.

Striking pages, probably could have been a superstar if not for his illness, but still a great achievement to stand above the crowd with what like 30-40 comic pages total.

Unfortunately, I had never heard or seen the name Nick Manabat until I watched this video. I don't think his work was ever published here in Brazil, and access to imported editions of Image wasn't easy to get by at the time. But watching the video, I fell in love with his work. I have already purchased a few editions I found online, and I can't wait to be able to appreciate his work firsthand. Thank you once again, Ed and Jim, for showcasing amazing artists that I still need to discover.
