I failed to mention in this video that if docking is going to be performed, it should be done within the first week of a puppies life. Our puppies are way too old to dock their tails and we have never had any intentions of docking their dogs' tails.
In veterinary medicine more and more vets do not agree with declaw removal, tail docking and ear cropping they are seeing it not necessary specially in the cases for cosmetic reasoning only. This is a very informative video appreciate your input and views on the matter.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Our goal was to educate people on where docking came from and why it is still around. We are so glad that you found it informative. Have a wonderful day!
Our Vet told us exactly the same thing and I agree that the dogs should not be altered. I see no value to doing it to the dog. Also, unless the dog is going to be used for breeding, they should be spayed or neutered to prevent needless breeding. There are too many unwanted dogs and cats now.
Great choice of an aussie! I have four aussies. In Europe they stopped the requirement of Australian Shepherds to have a bob or docked-tail. My aussies have docked tails because the American standard description still requires it. They still wag their docked tails. Many members of the Australian Shepherd community, including myself have requested that the standard description be changed.
The puppies are adorable. I'm glad they won't have docked tails. I think their tail is a big part of their communication. I wouldn't feel right taking it from them. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas 😊❤
We have had a good day and hope your's was as well. We haven't ever liked the look of the docked tails and it is such an important part of their communication. Thanks so much for watching!
After the first 8 seconds when you said "we are about to remove her tail," I had to stop and go to the comments! What a relief to see that you did not do that to the dog!! Was not going to watch one second longer.
We hope you kept watching. Our intention was to educate people one where tail docking came from and why it still continues. Sorry for scaring you! No tail docking here. Thanks for watching Angela.
@Tami Lewis....LOL. Evidently you don't know this couple very well. I know how old those pups are and KNEW I'd been 'clickbaited'. But I watched anyway to see how he'd address a very controversial subject. I must say he did very well.
Some Australian Shepherd bloodlines are naturally bobbed. My Father had them and they all were born with short tails. Some LGD's have cropped ears and bobbed tails to lessen injuries when they fight predators. Great information. You have beautiful puppies.👍👍
I agree, I prefer leaving the dog's tail versus docking for looks. But if it's going to be done it needs to be done humanely for the dogs comfort. Thanks for your video
Mike and Selah, when I raised schnauzers I dock the puppies tails at 3 days old... That's been a few years ago I don't have the heart to do it now. Hope you all had a Merry Christmas. Have a most prosperous 2019.
Yes .... many of the hunting breeds have their tails docked .... and normally within days of being born. My two male German Short-haired pointers, and the rest of the litter (12 in all) had their tails docked, and dew claws removed by a vet. I saw these puppies almost every day, and none of them skipped a beat by the procedure. My remaining GSP is now 12+ years old and has never had an issue with either procedure. His tail is about 5" long and has never had issues with maneuvering through any kind of hunting cover, or swimming, or pointing for that matter. He has plenty of tail to wag, and plenty of tail to tuck between his legs if he were to be in distress. I would never have your puppy's tails docked at this point .... that ship has sailed as far as I'm concerned. Do it early, or not at all. I really don't like to even broach this subject, because many times people's opinions are only based on feelings, and not on the utility of the procedure ..... because they don't have working dogs. Take care, and I hope you & your family are having the Merriest of Christmases!
Thanks for your experience and knowledge with us David! We never even considered docking our puppies tails and knew that this would be a potentially heated topic but thought it could be a good teaching point about where docking came from and why it has continued. We can definitely see the reason that people have their working dogs tail docked and see how it can be beneficial to the dog. Again we appreciate you sharing your experience with us, thanks so much for watching! Hope you have had a wonderful day!
Great video, Mike! I remember hearing about docking before, but I guess I didn't realize that it was still a practice. Thanks for the information. Very well said.🙏
You scared me there a minute.I worked in vet med a long time and have seen first hand the nightmare of somebody trying to dock an older dogs tail at home.
Sorry Christie! We would never dock their tails and especially at this age. I am sure that you have seen some awful things. Sorry to worry you but we wanted to educate people on where docking came from and why it still continues. Thanks so much for watching Christie!
Interesting history. But I don’t like the practice of docking. I love the fluffy little tail and I am glad you are not going to do it. I hope you had a very Merry Christmas. You are one of my favorite UA-cam families. I have enjoyed watching your videos in 2018 and am looking to sharing 2019 with you.
Thank you Cathie! We have had a nice day and hope that you have too. Thanks so much for being part of our channel and we appreciate you watching! Blessings to you during 2019!
Thank you! We are so glad that you found our intro funny. lol There seem to be a lotof people that thought we were really going to cut our dog's tail off. 🙄
Mele kalikimaka from Hawaii! Thanks for the informative video. Keep it coming! Oh and when you raised the axe at the beginning of your video, Kenzie yelled "nooooo!" Haha, your acting got her.
My Dad raised Jack Russell Terriers in the UK and he would dock the tails and remove dew claws at birth. The pups didn't even squirm or squeal. He had seen too many cases of bad injuries in dogs with long tails that worked along hedgerows and such and got caught in thorns and brambles. Ear clipping has been banned in the UK for many years and now they've banned tail docking too (although I believe it's still allowed for working breeds). I currently have a Boston Terrier/Chihuahua mix and after the third time she pulled out one of her dew claws I had them surgically removed. My other two dogs have no problems with their dew claws and I've never discovered how the Boston was ripping hers out.
I raised poodles and cut the tails off at 3 days old. No blood not even a sound. But my standard poodle still has his tail and knocks over everything with it. I thought having him all natural would be great thing. But now I'm wishing he didn't have his tail.
I have never seen it done. That's interesting that there is not any blood. Thanks for sharing your comment. It is always great to hear calm & rational opinions like yours. 😀
@HEAVENBOUND Homestead.....Agreed. MY experiences with years of breeding 'Aussies' also. 'Clip' 'em with barely a whimper at 48 hours, put 'em back in the nest and watch 'em crawl back to their favorite teat. Done deal.
I was thinking this would be about docking sheep tails. Did that as part of my farm training. Cut between the joints with a red hot chisel. At less than a week of age the lambs were more stressed by being held by all 4 legs than the fraction of a second that the hot blade cut and sealed the tail.
We had a dog with a flag... I agree that docking shouldn't be done just for looks. I can't stand to cause pain to a critter if there's not a real reason. It's hard enough to do something that makes them scared or uncomfortable when it's necessary (their shots, being neutered or spayed, etc). We had a mix breed dog that was just a pet. She was a mix but looked completely like the breed that is traditionally bob tailed. We opted not to bob her tail because there was no reason. Plus, about the last 2 inches of her tail was white, the only white on her besides a bit of a vest-like patch on her chest. Her tail fur was about 5 inches long and flopped around when she wagged her tail. My dad dubbed that white on her tail her flag and it was a cute joke about her all her life. We had her for about 15 years and she was a delight. I've always been glad we didn't bob her tail. I wouldn't have wanted to cause her pain, but it was also just the cutest little thing. Her little flag flew high and she was cherished all her days.
Merry Christmas folks....spot on,Mike. Only dock tails for working dogs....fashion comes and goes. When docking goes out of fashion you just can't glue the tail back on the dog. Besides I like a dog with its tail....personal preference of course. Anyway thankyou for making this video....might change someone's mind that was on the fence about this matter. In the case of Australian Shepherds and some other breeds, they are docked to follow the breed standard set by the breed club. The breed club set the standard because of the dangers of cattle herding dogs and injury. No one should ever, for any reason dock tails by banding. Nor should they be docked on older pups and adult dogs. That is serious surgery. Much like cutting a limb off. The tail is an extension of the spine and easily can damage the spinal cord. Pups should have their tail docked by 3 days old. It is the safest time. With that said and in my opinion. Aussies tails are cut too short. A lot of health issues can come from a very short tail. My current Aussie has a natural bob tail and it is longer. About 3 inches and I like it much better that the no tail look. For me and my life, i would rather have the tail. Though ai will admit that it is nice not having to brush all the stickers and cockle burrs and stick tights that get hung in thefur of their tail. In Europe, tail docking and ear cropping is illegal on any dog. I like that. Kudos for you to leaving the tails on. I pray no one whacks them off later, because they would rather have it off. People are crazy sometimes. Beautiful puppy!
Lindy, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. As you know we prefer no docking as well. If you have a hunting dog or a working dog that might break their tails docking is a good practice. I’m trying to be patient while watching this video. I’ve been in rescue for over 20 years. Im about to blow a gasket. Click bait.
Don't blow a gasket! That is awesome that you have been involved with rescue for as long as you have. We wanted to educate people on where docking came from and why it still continues. Thanks for watching.
Unless it is done by a doctor under sedation it is animal abuse.
I think a train professional should do it too. 👊
God gave dogs tails for a reason who are we to mess with what God created
Please I beg you don't cut anything off your dog. Jesus made the dogs the way He wants them. They are already perfect. Plus those dogs are too old for docking. I could not watch the video
You are right!! Too bad you didn't watch the rest of the video.😞 Because we discussed that we are not docking our dogs tails. 😉
Merry Christmas
Thanks Wes! Hope you have had a wonderful day!
