He transcended all genres, which helps account for his relative obscurity. If artists can't be pigeonholed, the critics and promotors and record companies don't know what to do with them. See also: Nesmith, Michael.
I watched a documentary a few weeks ago..one if his songs was on the soundtrack..jesus what a talent...this man's music is now in my life! Thank you John!
Saw John in 1970 at the Vanguard coffee house in Kansas City with my future wife. Moved to Phoenix and caught the Phoenix concerts. Followed him to many venues after that. What a talent
What a wonderful video with such great quality. John Stewart was simply an incredible singer/songwriter. Altho' well-known by lovers of fine music, he was & is still vastly underrated.
A REAL TREAT TO HEAR AND SEE THIS WONDERFUL MAN AND HIS BEAUTIFUL MUSIC. I found John in 74 up in Central City CO and have loved him since! Thanks for this.... :-)
ANyway what i wanted to say was that I miss the hell out of John Stewart. Been listening to him since his Kingston Trio days back in 1961 or 62 I believe it was. Fine singer, composer and guitar player
I use to try to see him when he was in AZ. I was going to use one of his songs with my middle school ELA classes when he died. I liked introducing his music to new generations.
one of the serious regrets of my life is that i was never able to see John perform live. At least there is a tremendous legacy of recorded music to remember him by.
saw John live many times late 60's early 70's. seems like he was just someone we knew---even though just from the audience. taking requests, oh yeah. Little coffee houses, and cafes were the best, when you could reach right out and touch him, as his music touched us. Thanks, John
Heard John Stewart at Celebrity Theater (in the Round) in Phoenix and he performed the welcome concert at the start of the 1975 academic year at Northern Arizona University.
It is hard to explain his effect on meafter listening to his songs from the trio days through Viet Nam, Army infantry, airborne, Somalia, Afghanistan and all of the insurmountable problems of life, he was always therewith rare relevance.
Thank you for posting this, Mickey. I hadn't seen it before. I grew up listening to The Phoenix Concerts album. (As much as I grew up, anyhow! 😁). My Mom and her boyfriend were at that concert that the album was recorded at, and that makes the album of soul moving songs even more meaningful for me. She "moved upstairs" a few years ago, as has John. This album is like a tattoo on my heart. ❤️
The song is on at least two of John's albums, "Phoenix Concerts" and "The Last Campaign." This particular performance is not on audio that I know of, but the concert is on DVD, "The Kingston Trio and Friends Reunion."
I saw him at the Ice House in Pasadena in the late 60s, then several times in N Calif at Chucks Cellar in Palo Alto, Even interviewed him once there. My all time favorite ballad singer.
Kentucky Derby, last weekend, Preakness in 1 week and a half. Time for me to listen to "Let the Big Horse Run" again. John Stewart. Thanks for posting this.
Why cant you go back to Kanas? Great song every word of the song are excellent you just dont want it to end. Back round singers are awesome makes the song perfect. Rip to a great singer.
John played several times at the Hilton Inn in Vail about 1976. Buffy was with him and he packed the house. I still have the Phoenix Concerts loaded in my car CD player. I loved his music.
I got to see John live many, many times and was privileged to meet him in person three times. He was my musical muse. Great writer, performer and guitarist. But mostly, he was a down to Earth true gentleman. The world is less bright by his absence, but at least we still have his music. Thanks so much for posting this. Anyone know what happened to Buffy Ford?
It was Japanese Deer park. It was 1AM the band was still playing I was in the front row. The park closed at 11PM. The music kept playing and John sang on. I first learned of California Bloodlines in 1970 from having known Jim Gautney and Sam Hamill. Bolinas is my favorite John Stewart recording.
I love this song, and especially this version. I watched it in 1981 and have thought of it ever since, and I'm so glad it's been posted here. I wish I could buy the audio of this version. Anyone know where I can get it?
Buckingham most likely introduced him to the Model 1, they had spent a lot of time together when making Stewart’s album and around this time as well. Rick Turner built the Model 1 for Lindsey as he wanted a guitar that was a cross between of a Les Paul and a Stratocaster. So Turner came up with the model 1 for him. John Stewart had said in the past that he patterned his lead guitar style from Buckingham, which I can hear a bit of in this performance.
It's that same hand made, off-brand that Lindsey Buckingham used around that time. They were made by Rick Turner. Perhaps, it's even Lindsey's, since he was there at the show and was working closely with John.
The most underrated and fantastic singers of all time
And song writer/lyricist!! RIP
Over the past decades I have seen JOHN STEWART perform a dozen times. Here he is at the top of his game. Sad to see that these times are gone. RIP.
I was so fortunate to see John at the Phoenix Concert. Had never heard of him; still
Love his music and this song in particular 49 years later.
The 50 year Phoenix Concert reunion is at the MIM this coming March 22, 2024. Tickets are on sale now. Got mine yesterday. My god I’m excited!!!
God, I just love this song! Never get tired of John Stewart music . . .
I Love the sound of the back vocals kisses from Brazil
This version of this classic is in the top ten of all time! Think about that for a minute.
Yes , this song & The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down from The Last Waltz.
This song is so true, and still brings me to tears sometimes...
Liquid nostalgia. No one evokes it like John Stewart. He is missed.
The Phoenix Concert album is one of my top 10 all time favs. Miss John Stewart.
Great album. Great artist!
You have to admire what a long career he had, through so many years and different genres.
He transcended all genres, which helps account for his relative obscurity. If artists can't be pigeonholed, the critics and promotors and record companies don't know what to do with them. See also: Nesmith, Michael.
Miss that dude!
I watched a documentary a few weeks ago..one if his songs was on the soundtrack..jesus what a talent...this man's music is now in my life! Thank you John!
I met John in the 60's when in Hawaii. He was such a wonderful and talented gentleman. Hope he is still singing in Heaven.

"I will go on loving you. It's easier that way. "
I never thought of it that way.
A prolific song writer of beautiful Americana. Sorry not to be able to anticipate more from John Stewart. Still love July You’re a Woman!
There's nothing to be down about you either win or lose. Could be the greatest fucking song ever recorded.
it's indeed a good one no one knows about which includes John himself But we do.
And how- Stewart, best American songwriter ever.
18 wheels! My favorite.
Saw John in 1970 at the Vanguard coffee house in Kansas City with my future wife.
Moved to Phoenix and caught the Phoenix concerts. Followed him to many venues after that. What a talent

My Hero....John Stewart who went mostly ignored except by other Heroes of folk & Country Rock.

Heard John Stewart at Celebrity Theater (in the Round) in Phoenix and he performed the welcome concert at the start of the 1975 academic year at Northern Arizona University.
Saw him several times in Flagstaff in the early 70s. Great shows.
John Stewart also played the welcome concert Northern Arizona University in 1975 or 1976.
Can't even tell you how much I love this.
It is hard to explain his effect on meafter listening to his songs from the trio days through Viet Nam, Army infantry, airborne, Somalia, Afghanistan and all of the insurmountable problems of life, he was always therewith rare relevance.
True. His music is timeless.
John Stewart is feeling it.
Way too long to find John but I'm glad I did .

Terri Reed. Great words. 👍
Having lived in Topeka, Kansas in 1953 and going to high school in Wichita, Kansas from 1959-1962, I am so aware, now, that I can't go back to Kansas.
Just love the passion
Saw many times in Kansas City-last with Pat Paulson then twice at McCabe’s in Santa Monica. Talked to him 3-4 times VERY patient & polite!
The song is on at least two of John's albums, "Phoenix Concerts" and "The Last Campaign." This particular performance is not on audio that I know of, but the concert is on DVD, "The Kingston Trio and Friends Reunion."
I saw him at Celebrity theater in 1977 , Rest in Peace John.
Thank God this has been reposted. A wonderful version of a Stewart classic!
What a song ❤
I saw him at the Ice House in Pasadena in the late 60s, then several times in N Calif at Chucks Cellar in Palo Alto, Even interviewed him once there. My all time favorite ballad singer.

Who were the two ladies singing harmony/background? Beautiful
It looks to me like he is playing Lindsey Buckingham's guitar.
Ahh, John, we miss you!
Could you image Jon Stewart slapping Tommy Smuthers for that remark? Ha! John Stewart - great song writer.
who are the 2 backup vocalists. great harmony together.
Would love to set a video of the Phoenix concert- is there one?
Él mejor!!!
He and Dylan... on key at least once per song.
+RantzBizGroup You are so ignorant--on both counts
I agree and I can't help but ask,"RBG, WTF are you doing HERE?"
And he called her "Sweet Heart On Parade"
You can either sink or swim!
Where did you get that guitar???
Did Stewart introduce that guitar to Buckingham, or the other way around?
Buckingham most likely introduced him to the Model 1, they had spent a lot of time together when making Stewart’s album and around this time as well. Rick Turner built the Model 1 for Lindsey as he wanted a guitar that was a cross between of a Les Paul and a Stratocaster. So Turner came up with the model 1 for him.
