Every tattoo artist should take note about what Ryan Ashley said. Her approach to her clients likes and dislikes are amazing. Show 3 pics you like and why and show 3 pics you don't like and the reason for it. It's so important to know what your client dislikes so that you don't tattoo that on them. Big ups to her!

I thought the same, but they are both in the tattoo industry and he is untouchably talented... she won Ink Master season 8 and was amazing... he, is sooo much more...OMG... checkout his work! This is the common denominator between them and probably the initial attraction, but I totally agree he is better looking than the spoken word! BTW, I don't have and will never have any tattoos myself, but I am an artist and appreciate the art of tattoo and have watched every season of Ink Master

13:30 there is a simple reason why tattoos dont achieve prices as "fine" art does: it's not tradeable! If you buy a famous painting it might be worth more some day and will be around even longer than the owner. a tattoo basically dies with it's owner and deteriarates over time. It's just not a suitable investment für huge fortunes as painting or other art pieces can be!

Preserving human bodies is an art of its own. Maybe preserving a tattood corpse is a genius idea.
Fine art is definitely, to a degree, also used for money laundering. Pay someone to paint something gaudy and gigantic and then pay them with dirty money, and now you've got a transferrable good that holds that same value and whose value may potentially increase with time.

I came to the comment section to see if others were annoyed about how much he talked over Ryan and I was not disappointed
I just got my second tattoo yesterday. It’s MUCH bigger than my first and I’d been booked in for months for it. The artist was amazing. We laid the stencil several times until we got it right, she was patient and kind, she talked with me through it and checked if I was okay. It was an amazing experience compared to my first tattoo. So in the end I absolutely tipped her greatly. I was so happy with my piece I almost cried. She earned every bit of that tip and probably more tbh.

Loved this commentary. It’s so good to hear tattoo artists point of view, and it all sounded fair and valid. It’s a massive thing to place so much trust in what they do. At the end of the day they deserve respect and kudos for the respect they give their clients.
My tattoo artist stayed 5 hours after the shop closed to finish up my friend and I’s tattoos. We both tipped 50%. He also did my first tattoo. Ive had over 12 hours of tattooing now and am finally coming up on my sleeve. All I have left is to add my last piece of “patchwork” and my filler :) I’m super excited that he is going to be doing my chest piece this christmas

I already have a hard time trying to save up for a good artist.
When art sells for those prices, it's mostly at art house auctions, when the artist has no longer anything to do with it. At that point it's really only a matter of status, getting the famous artist painting, or it may be that it's a relevant historical piece.
Tattoo artists are more like craftsmen anyway. There's self-expression there, but they're not really writing philosophical dissertations and manifestos and changing the cultural zeitgeist with brainy socio-political pieces and reinventing mediums. They're mostly just being commissioned to ink cool stuff (Not that there's anything wrong with that, I'm an artist too but that's also what I do, "cool looking stuff"). So it's not gonna be any time soon that you get a tattoo equivalent of a Damien Hirst, plagiarizing hack or not.
And you can't really re-sell a tattoo. So yeah I'd say don't worry about that.

Tattoos are expensive, but the only artists that would make a tattoo 120,000 dollars are artists that are at conventions a lot, the only tattoo I can see being that much is a full body tattoo. At the shop my parents and I go to, small tattoos are only 1-2 hundred dollars.

Getting a tattoo done and meeting Ryan is on my bucket list. Her work is fine art.
I just recently started a BEAUTIFUL tattoo of my favorite Tiger from a sanctuary. It took several months to find the PERFECT PERSON to do it! After seeing her portfolio, I said "HELL YES!" It's done in color and realism. People who have seen it, are shocked and amazed! I can't wait to go back next month to get it completed! I kept telling her the whole time that this is absolutely gorgeous from the time she put the stencil on my arm until the last moment of the tattoo!

Pick a tattoo artist on their style, their level of talent and also how you feel about their personality, not price. You are sitting with this person for several hours so it's important to like each other. The shop has to factor in, is it comfortable to spend time there? I've changed tattoo artists because factors are location is closer to where I live even though it's on the other side of London from me, previous guy was in a different country, the new artist is more outgoing and jokes around than the first guy who is very quiet and reserved. Also it's going to be expensive to get a good tattoo, I've spent about nine hundred pounds so far, I envisage some people see it as a waste but I'm happy to be a canvas.
They both interior each other. They are both excited about what they do and it doesn't seem to bother either one of them. They obviously have a respect for each other and the same passions they are stoked to talk about

Six6 Nix my guess is because hes salty tattoos aren't considered fine art. He doesn't see himself as a service person or working in customer service, he wants to be considered an artist and make that "hung in a museum" money.
From the economics point of view, it seems that he was referring to information asymmetry. When buyers don't know all prices individual sellers charge, they can't make a fully rational informed decision and end up paying more than they could have paid otherwise. He also mentioned sellers collaborating and setting price minimums for their works, but that is impossible in the tattoo industry workers since all sellers can't communicate and set the minimum. This would have had to be done via non-public communication between artists, not via posting pricing.
In short, sharing prices on social media would lead to lower tattoo prices and less profits for artists, which he tries to defend by arguing about cartels, which is impossible in this industry

I think an argument they miss about why tattooing will never be on the same level financially as painting is that a work of art, like a painting, is a secondary asset. It can be taken care of and preserved for generations. Bought and sold to make a profit etc etc.

The first 3 seconds are classic. I saw stills of them together when she was preggers and it was so beautiful. I would get a tattoo of that picture, and their tattoos would be in my tattoo! Getting the tattoo would hurt less than watching this video, though, and would seem to take less time. It seemed so perfect in the magazine.
