It's complicated. There were some legal issues to settle (nothing to do with Dalton). It ended up taking 6 years before another movie was made, and by then he was ready to move on. Dalton's Bond was basically a 180 from Roger Moore. Moore was good with the one-liners and womanizing, but hard to take seriously. Dalton was intense and a force to be reckoned with in a fight, but seemed to have no sense of humor. Pierce Brosnan, I think (like Connery) was a nice balance of all the above traits.
