I was diagnosed with Cervical Dystonia over a decade ago. I thought my life was over. The condition is managed with medication(Baclofen) and its challenging to live with but after I accepted it as part of my life I discovered that my life was not over. Its just on a different path.
There are different therapies for cervical dystonia based upon symptom severity. Your treating doctor will guide you on this. Some of the general understanding for treatment of cervical dystonia can be read from the following web link www.movementdisordersclinic.com/cervical-dystonia/
I agree Many people don't know about and it often goes undiagnosed for years. Fortunately there is so much more information about it now, one thing I thank the internet for 🙂
Sir, I was having stiff neck and pain with right side back shoulders a bit stiff swollen and raised just a few minutes after I woke up. The GP said it was Torticollis by asking and touching the parts. I was prescribed Naproxen. The condition is getting better slowly. Is it really Torticollis? Is it going to happen again?
Torticollis means twisting or turning of neck to one side. It can happen due to various reasons. One of the reason could be muscle spasm secondary to a strain (like in your case). The muscle spasm causes neck to be slightly twisted to one side. These usually improve over few days to a week (like a cramp). Muscle spasms / cramps can happen to anyone based upon various factors. Strengthning of muscles, adequate hydration usually help to prevent recurrences.
@@movementdisordersclinic Thank you for replying. Will take your advices to avoid recurrences. I was really afraid with the slightly raised shoulders (trapezius muscles) and having this intermittently.
I have a friend of mine that is now 22 years old , she had meningitis at the age of 3 , which wasn't treated well ,so after that she had difficulty to walk ( she couldn't move her left leg ) , she has contractions of her superior members ,and she doesn't pronounce all the letters well, ... a cerebral MRI was done , there was no abnormality . She was diagnosed with dystonia ...What do you think is the best treatment ?
The treating doctor / neurologist / Movement Disorders specialist should be able to advise based upon severity and symptoms. Different therapies are available including medications, injections and surgeries
Please meet your treating Neurologist Or Movement Disorders Specialist for assessment and advice. Without assessing it would be difficult to give an proper advice.
Dystonia is just a symptom. The underlying cause for dystonia will let you know whether it can be cured or managed. e.g Dystonia occuring due to some medication sideeffects, brain fever can possibly be cured. Dystonia occuring due to metabolic disorders like wilson's disease can be reversed. Dystonia occuring due to some genetic or unknown causes can be managed with good therapy options. So overall the underlying cause will predict the outcome of dystonia - curable, treatable etc

While researching my father's tongue dyskinesia for the past five months, I came across valbenazine and deutetrabenazine as potential medications. It's important to note that effectiveness can vary and should be determined by a doctor. Are these medications readily available in India? Additionally, I'd like to inquire about the appropriate stage for treatment with these medications and the possibility of Botulinum toxin injections.
Valabenzine and deutetrabanzine are currently not available in Indian markets. You can speak to your treating neurologist or Movement Disorders specialist to find out whether he requires botulinun toxin injecitons for tongue dyskineisa or can be managed with other forms. If any other concern you can contact our clinic secretary at 7026603300
Greetings sir I've been having focal dystonia (writing cramps) for the past 2 years without knowing that it was focal dystonia. I have had the most neat; and well perfect hand writing in my life but this problem began in Grade 12 earlier in the year. My mom once took me to my doctor and i explained to the doctor that I've recently been having problems writing and gripping the pen, she told me that it's probably stress and anxiety that I'm in my final year of high school, but then and there I knew i had a neurological problem i just did not know the name of it. I do have anxiety sir, but i don't think it has anything to do with this problem. I'm even scared of writing in front of people, i wear long sleeve jerseys t-shirts to cover my hand when I'm writing because i can't seem to get even the posture right. This is just frustrating because I've isolated myself from the outside world. I once bought a pencil gripper and inserted it on my pen but that didn't work either. Do you think I should go for a proper consultation to determine whether or not I have focal dystonia. I'm from South Africa by the way
