Yes an octave is tuned the same as a mandolin. On this particular tune, he plays with the E string dropped to a D. It's very fun to play this tuning on the mandolin as well. Emory uses this tuning in his song Fantasy, off the same album as this song.

GDAD is also Irish bouzouki tuning, i have tried playing this tune on bouzouki it sounds good.
Nice - now just imagine how it would sound if he played on it for a few weeks!
