  • I made a Solar Powered Rasperry Pi using 18650 cells as the power storage. Eventually this will become a pirate box, this was the hardware portion of it.
    2x -18650 batteries: amzn.to/2XSb495
    1x powerbank kit from ebay -
    1x red toggle switch: amzn.to/2XSb7lh
    1x dollar enclosure I picked up from Rite Aid, generic enclosure but fits the Raspberry Pi perfectly.

    Do you guys want me to make a follow up to this in 2020?

      I’m keen, I’m wondering if that solar panel is large enough to charge the battery to power the pi?

      @AlansInventions  4 роки тому

      It was not, it would just slow down the battery drain.

    My wife happened to find those boxes on sale at walmart for $0.10 a couple of weeks ago and bought about 20 of them for me. They're great for small project enclosures!

      I found more at walmart a few days ago. I was going to remake this video with better quality and a better electronics system but looks like piratebox is dying due to changes in HTTPS and the ease of use decreasing.

    Needs a bigger solar panel. Also for solar projects the Zero W draws a hell of a lot less power than the bigger boards. Unless you need the extra features you'd be better off with the $10 board. I'm looking at solar for an off grid surveillance system.

      Thanks, I know. This was a thing I threw together in 5 minutes.. Never really expected to get more than a few minutes of usage from. I do have a couple pi zero laying around, might re do this project.

    So I hooked up 25 of the Walmart solar-powered $1 lights but I think I did something wrong like you did and I just hooked all 25 up together and didn't bother putting any capacitor I know it's like 3 years ago or 5 years ago from this video but if you get back to this man I I could use some advice from a real professional

      Maybe I will!!! Any more specific features you would want to see?

      @@AlansInventions Oh boy. I couldn’t tell how the 18650s attached and were retained. Are they enough to get through the night? How big a panel would it take actually to charge 2-4 cells? Now that there lots of cheap usb-attached panels, would a 5v 3a panel suffice? Could you use one directly plugged into a usb battery bank, say a 5000-10,000 mah unit? I know most have some kind of charge controller, so would external boards be required? I could see a parts list: Pi, battery, panel, case, camera. That’s it- in my dreams. But my electronics knowledge is ... none. Still, this project would be perfect for a bird cam, and I have a spare Pi 3b. You have a relaxed presenting style. I think you could go head to head with Jeff Geerling and Chris Barnatt. Thanks -

      Hey thanks for the suggestion. I am just starting to get serious about my channel. If you have any constructive criticism for my newer videos I would appreciate it.

    Did you encounter low voltage issue on your raspberry Pi?

      Yes I did. Runtime was terrible as well. Completely scrapped this. lol

    Hey Alan, this is super cool!
    I'm actually working on my own personal DIY and your videos are very educational.
    I'm trying to build a portable PI 3b+ with a small 7inch portable screen.
    Are you able to create another video like this but with more power and a bigger case?
    I'm trying to target 3-4 Hours of battery life.
    Thanks!

      Hmm, I could try. What would be the intent though? What are you trying to do on the pi itself?

  • @patrwest

    Do you have a link for the board? Also how effective is the solar panel at keeping the pi running?

    • @AlansInventions
      @AlansInventions  6 років тому +1

      I have it running since yesterday night, the board has a 4 led indicator and has not dropped below 2 led's. I am only using two 18650 cells. 3,000 mAh each. For the price of the board i'd buy two and just hook up the solar panels together and maybe add another two batteries.

    How long does this actually stay powered?

    • @AlansInventions
      @AlansInventions  5 років тому

      Unfortunately not very long. The batteries I ended up using were knock offs and had a very low power capacity.

    Did you end up using this for the PirateBox?

    • @AlansInventions
      @AlansInventions  5 років тому

      Yes and No. The solar panel was inefficient and wouldnt charge the batteries fast enough to prevent it from dying. However it is all setup with the software. Below is the link for the piratebox software. I am thinking about re-doing it, I have a couple small flat 1300 mah batteries that i might use. piratebox.cc/

      Unfortunately the 18650 cells I bought were cheap ultrafire ones. Only 550 mAh. To answer your question, not very long.

      It's a wifi access point that you connect to from any device with a web browser and you can chat, share files and no internet is required. This one I tried making it solar using a couple batteries and tiny solar panel but it was not able to stay on for long. Lol the solar panel did not charge fast enough
