I still think this counts as Judd and Lil Judd being the only mammals left.
Grizz is like, barely even alive (that thing can straight up melt like there’s no organs in him) and his creations with the fuzzy goo are hardly mammals, just hairy sea creatures. He’s lost his sense of self and possibly even deluded about what his is now, and anyone who touches the goo shares that fate with him.

The second they revealed Mr. Grizz was a bear, I knew you'd be pissed. But in my opinion they handwave it enough to that they make it believable in-universe. However I think the subtle implications that Grizz gained sentience through human experimentation, or even the crystals that gave the inklings and octolings intelligence. Do I agree that it was lazy and predictable? Yes. Am I ok with it? Also yes.

I thought the crystal thing was brilliant. I thought it was a wonderful metaphor for how even in death, there is life. After the destruction of human civilization, I think an entirely new life form emerging from the remaining hopes and wishes of mankind was a beautiful way to explain the evolution of the Inklings. There are things I would change or expand upon, of course, but I think Return of the Mammalians overall is a great story about the beauty of how life on Earth finds a way to keep on living.
Even Mr. Grizz, dumb predictability aside, ties wonderfully into this narrative. I love the detail of when he notices how truly alone he is, and his desperate need to cling on to the past and see his own kind again drove him to destruction and obsession. If Return of the Mammalians is about being able to recognize and appreciate the change going on around you and letting life continue, the story of Mr. Grizz is about the danger of refusing to see that truth.

To add my two cents regarding the lore, I personally love that they went the more predictable route of making Grizz an actual bear because it helps emphasize how wacky Splatoon as a franchise is. Honestly, Splatoon lore reminds me of how Kirby lore is presented. Through and through its a lighthearted, wacky adventure before hitting some of the darkest bits of lore it can without bumping the age rating like a semi-truck. But underneath all of the craziness there's some genuine heartfelt and depressing moments. Even if it's nonsensical you still feel grounded in reality because the emotions are real.

Yeah they had a whole game to set up the little seeds and hints towards the fact that Mr. Grizz is a bear. It's pretty obvious if you dive hard into the lore and all the elements of the game, but the average player probably didn't think too hard about it.
For me it was never in question that Mr. Grizz would be a bear, but rather "What kind of fucked up bear are we going to see" and I got a great payoff. Giant fuzzy ooze horror Bear to me is quite different from "just a normal bear".

His bones, his organs, everything was replaced by the ooze, which is why he can fall into it like Inklings do. And also how he can talk normally, and why he's shaped like that meme bear, and why his fuckin fur indents when you hit the spots and makes me feel uncomfortable.

His existence actually got me to question, pull back, and ultimately *stop* assuming that ink based lifeforms are physiologically/cellularly homogenous goop shapes and to actually admit that yeah they actually do have a defined biology.
And as for why he can submerge in ink without shifting to a swim form, need I remind people about octodivers?

      @antonberkbigler5759 2 роки тому +6

@@oranplan1630 we do not directly see his body being broken down into ooze, the animation you are referring to can just as easily be interpreted as him drawing up fuzzy ooze from beneath himself to engulf himself before diving. Also his dialogue towards Cuttlefish of “does your species even have bones?” can imply that he himself does have bones, however this is both circumstantial evidence at best, and dependent on NOA’s localization being accurate (they have proven themselves to be a poor source of accurate splatoon lore). Inklings/octolings are not the only modern marine creatures that can participate in ink sports or related combat activities, such as the Salmonids, a species that does have bones and can dive into ink in their base form. Leastways I assume they have bones because IRL salmon have bones.

    [Spoilers, ofc.]
The sheer amount of "PLEASE DON'T BE A BEAR" is easily the funniest part of this video, along with the immediate recognition of the hat and the utter glee over Smallfry's transformation. I think one of my favorite loredrops was the crystal substance: it explains perfectly how Inklings and Octolings can change their ink color (from muscular, electronic impulses), as well as being an explanation for how many species just spontaneously got sapient at once.
I like to think that Mr. Grizz is very much like Judd-- same intelligence, same telepathy to communicate, same general-root of "cryo-sleep for 12000 years does weird things to animals". But he's also a massive bear-ooze amalgamation at this point which makes things really... work about him? He's so hellbent on restoring the past that he lost his original body, sort of how Commander Tartar lost its original purpose as time went on and it developed its motives. It's such an obvious take but I genuinely really like it, even if the story mode isn't perfect; there's something so delightfully absurd about Mr. Grizz that it fits in perfectly with all the other final bosses.
Congratulations on being the first Inkling in space!

I love the contrast between Judd and Mr Grizz
Both are cryo mammals that survived for 12000 years, and being cryo made them way more intelligent than the average member of their species
However, while Mr Grizz developed his intelligence on those 12000 years and became desperate and crazy after seeing that the Earth how he knew it was gone. Judd didn't really care that much (probably being a cat helped IDK), he quickly adapted the cephalopod society and became a part of it
But also, I think what helped Judd was: He was cryo under safer conditions than Mr Grizz, he was found by the Inklings who made him a part of them, and he also got a clone by the cryo machine in case he felt alone
Alone, that's the important thing here, Judd was not alone, but Mr Grizz was, all of the tripulation on the Ark died, he was all alone on his thoughts for 12000 years, and when he woke up, he didi it on the midle of nowhere without anything familiar he could find, the only thing that was close home for him was Salmon, but these Salmons were heavily changed too
Mr Grizz became desperate on his wish on getting the glory from the past again, he focused so much in the world that he wanted instead of accepting the new world he's living in on
-Kinda like holding on to your own theories and beliefs instead of accepting how things where clearly meant to be, poetic-

Honestly I think for me the bear thing is fine because the ending seems to solidly refute the idea of bringing mammals back into the world of Splatoon. Like you've said before, the design of the series is unique because of it's avoidance of mammals and other animals humans generally find cute, and having an ending that treats mammals solely as an enemy felt like an affirmation from the developers that this is something about the series that is valuable. But that's more of a meta reading of the story mode, from a Lore perspective I'm good because they made sure to emphasize that Mr Grizz was the only mammal left besides the Judd's and so now that he's gone it's just back to them

I remember having a similar “wait why actual bear” reaction and thinking he was some Fuzzy Ooze monster myself, but the Log.exe actually made me come to terms with it and quite like it.
I mean, Judd confirms that cryosleep is a real thing, so why wouldn’t they make a Noah’s Ark of Earth creatures with that tech? Personally I’m happy that he’s not an Inkling or Octoling, that ending just isn’t as interesting or morally grey as people make it out to be at all. I was banking on the Water Bear theory myself, because I saw somebody with the Mr. Grizz Badge and thought “Oh, I guess they WOULD stylize a tardigrade as a cube-shaped fat thing, right?” Plus, I just frankly love microbiology and thought it could expand on the “microorganisms in the air that eat ink” theory. Because if those things eat ink, and Inklings are MADE of ink… I mean it writes itself. My personal theory before playing the game was that he was a Salmonid, as not only do they not fear death and even honor it, but it’s the perfect cover for a takeover. As in, if Salmonids rush Splatsville, people are gonna wait for Grizzco to stop it- which of course they can intentionally fail at.
There’s also my brief headcanon of “seals are close to bears, what if Grizz was a seal that adapted to go on land because of competition from marine life,” but that had too many holes for me to take it seriously. I guess an arctic animal WOULD make sense, considering Alterna’s snow and the fact that humans ravaged the ice caps… plus, grizzlies and polar bears are pretty close. Perhaps Grizz is a hybrid after the originals died out due to the warmer temperatures and their first objective was to recreate the specimens that were killed off due to human activity.
TL;DR Mr. Grizz being a literal bear has grown on me because it’s so obvious that it kinda became unpredictable (I’m just relieved he wasn’t a human)

Also o don’t like grizz as a bear because they mainly just failed to make it work. It was already a concept I wasn’t too keen on but they could have possibly made interesting if they did it right. But instead we get tar tar with a sob story that makes zero sense. Like why did they give a bear intelligence how could this bear read human language and understand their instructions and how did this bear do jack shit with no thumbs
Also knowing everything about grizz kinda ruins his character as there is no longer this sense of mystery and intrigue he’s a big fat evil bear and that’s that.

For your question on how Mr. Grizz could swim in ink/fuzzy ooze, it’s actually hinted at the moment he “borrowed” Cuttlefish’s brain and wisdom. From what I’m guessing he somehow through golden egg infused technology, he absorbed some of an inklings latent ink swimming capabilities, which is why he was able to move in the ink in his boss, even if it’s at a much slower rate. It would explain why he captured Cuttlefish specifically as he mentions needing the wisdom of the ages.
Edit: also wanted to add that most likely the ingredients to make Fuzzy Ooze involve his blood/fur, an Inkling/Octoling Brain, and Golden Eggs. This would explain why it effects Inklings and Octolings so heavily by the Ooze. Plus with those three ingredients it keeps up with the 3 Theming. It would also explain why there’s a mummified Inkling in a Sunken Scroll and how Grizz was able to mummify Cuttlefish instantly, he mostly likely read and found a way to dehydrate and remove the brain of an Inkling to create the ooze. It’d also explain why he’s so goopy himself since he probably just ingested a mix of inkling ink and golden eggs and mixed it within his body, which explains his constant size changing and his ink swimming.

I don’t think that Mr. Grizz even qualifies as a “bear” anymore. He has mixed himself with so much of the liquid crystal material that he has lost almost all of what makes him a mammal. His body is filled with ooze and fuzzballs, and he can submerge into ink and has mutated to an abnormal size. This is what I like about what Nintendo did with Mr. Grizz, and I personally think it’s the perfect characterization of hopelessness, distortion, and tragedy.

They left that twist extremely obvious since before that game came out
With Mr Grizz they did a little more mistery, but they left all the clues really clear, the most clear one being Polaris Ark
The point is, Splatoon doesn't reallu saved much mistery, I mean, is a game where octopi and squids fight eachother with ink, has a cat with an arrow shaped tail as a game referi, the main villain from the past games is a DJ Samurai Octopus, and the most serious this franchise has gotten involves an old sentient telephone and a giant blender
This franchise is just wacky, Mr Grizz being a Bear is basically the devs telling us to chill, this is a funny wacky E rated franchise not rocket science

I mean, Rassicas, you are kind of right when you're talking during the credits. He is basically a sentient pile of ooze at this point. One that tries to hold onto something of his original form but ultimately he's as much ooze as he is anything else. I will say I understand the want for him to be more, in the sense of being something completely different than what he is, but he also isn't JUST that and his motivations when taken into context of everything, the ooze, the liquid crystal, etc, is honestly both understandable and low-key kinda horrifying, even if it's mostly shown in a PG way cause of that rating. For what it's worth, Splatoon has a really great story line for a series that's just winging it. I've seen many do much worse, especially when grown adults are not the main target audience... Like, they are making things up as they go at the end of the day. It can't possibly become some masterpiece in writing if things aren't extensively planned out in advance because of Final Splatfests, and if there isn't a finite amount of planned sequels before the Splatoon story mode just straight up dies.
The Direct claimed Return of the Mammalians is already the last of the "saga". For me, this means this was a send-off to the DJ Octavio arc. He's lost his entire Octarian army, and joined the New New Squidbeak Splatoon, even if unofficially. Whatever goes on for the DLC and later games will likely involve a brand new boss, or character arc. As far as I'm concerned, I really wanted Octavio's character to be properly resolved. His character feels like it hasn't been done justice. How did he survive his initial encounter with the Fuzzy Ooze? And from his established motivations, none of the issues Octarian society was facing have been addressed, the Great Turf War, both its causes and its consequences were completely ignored by Inklings and Octolings alike like it never happened or had any reason to happen, even though the sea levels are supposed to be still rising, and Salmonids are only making things more difficult for Inklings and Octarians on the surface, not easier. Their biggest problems are compounding. There's also the idea that the Great Zapfish is getting smaller every game, and will potentially "run out", putting everyone in danger.
I hope they don't forget about DJ Octavio and that we can see him develop better, this time as an ally. Also because I want more Turquoise October and DJ Octavio tracks. They're sick AF

My personal theory for why Mr Grizz could melt into the fuzzy ooze is that the actual bear Grizz died a while ago, but the ooze just started filling inside him and replacing his insides, though preserving his mind (the ooze is made with the liquid crystals, which reflect minds). Because of this, he's essentially just a bear pelt filled with that gross ooze.

Man I know a lot of people were upset with Mr Grizz being a bear, and I will agree that in some aspects the explanation for him having been a bear was kind of weak, I still think it makes sense in this dumb squid world.
Both Judd and Mr Grizz were cryogenically frozen for the longest fucking time, and almost everybody is fine with that explanation with Judd, but don’t really like it when applied to Mr Grizz? At least that’s what I can infer from a lot of peoples reactions.
And even with some of the weaker aspects of Mr Grizz’s backstory, like how he can make fuzzy ooze (imo it’s a little weak), it still fits in with the alterna logs, that being the crystals that evolved the squids and octos.
