I own 2 of these beautiful drums a 74 artist with gold hardware stained to look like a rosewood snare and a white pearl 61 artist love them both they are like any snare drums though they're kind like a snowflake no two will sound exactly the same glad you posted a video featuring these wonderful instruments
I have one of these, it's interesting, is early 60s I think WMP- the serial number 5604 -(quite low.) It has 10 lugs and a three point strainer but without any extension brackets, it was actualy sold as a radio king! The sound is very special, it sounds very much like my 40s radio king Krupa model.
this particular snare has my favorite all-time all-around snare sound...love maple snares in that size. Reminds me of the snare used on Paul Simon's '50 ways to lose your lover' song (even though I am pretty sure Steve Gadd used a metal snare.)
I prefer my Slingerland Artist Model 3 ply , over my Ludwig Supra, Pearl Sensitone Aluminium, Gretsch Maple and Gretsch COB. Still prefer it unmuffled, however.
Mike, what kind of cymbal serves as the bottom hat cymbal to the 16” K Custom Special Dry crash? I have a 16" A Zildjian Medium Crash I'd love to use as a bottom hat in a larger hi-hat set. Great and creative playing as always!
Hey Mike! How would you compare this to something like a Craviotto solid shell? or any other company that makes solid shells. An difference? Thanks a bunch!!
zach Var the Cravs and other modern solid drums are all kinda tributes to these but have a more modern/brighter sound with a higher volume threshold. This drum bottoms out if you hit it too hard.
I finally fixed the strainer on mine (the infamous flexible spring fix) and got it up and cracking just this week. Love the muffled sound you're getting Dave - will have to try that. Do you ever tune yours lower? Haven't spent much time on it yet, but having some trouble getting any sort of fatback sound from it. Sounds great tuned up higher, tho! ua-cam.com/video/4g7fYss9_14/v-deo.html Ironically, the other drum I got back into shape this week was my acro. Gonna check out your acro vid next. Good stuff!
I can get a decent lower tone out of it but it's not my favorite drum for that vibe. I think the Stick Saver hoopers might be the culprit. But I ain't changing 'em. ;)
Remember, Gene Krupa and the greatest drummer ever, Buddy Rich, were Slingerland lovers. Actually sounds better, unmuffled, like the great jazz drummers played.
Roy Beckerman if I were playing in the style of Gene and Buddy, I’d probably use it wide open. But I’ve not been in a big band or swing group drum since college.
That has to be one of the nicest wood snares I have ever heard. Loving this series!
slagdrill glad you’re diggin em!
Great drum.... Great playing... you totally nailed that groove.... thanks.
Thanks!
Sounds awesome as usual thanks for sharing love and look forward to the episodes
Thanks and glad you dig em!
Really nice series Michael .... absolutely enjoying them. Great playing too !!

Awesome! I bet those sounds great.

I have three of these. Good drums.
Dave Batemans Shed nice! 👍👍

Sean Meister it totally has that compressed, up-front vibe.

Would the internal muffler not get a similar sound ?
I like that sound if I can't find one then is there any new, easily available, affordable snare that can do similar in your opinion thanks.
John Collins any nice maple drum should be able to get close to this sound. But that really dense tone comes from the shell being single-ply

I've used different cymbals on bottom, including a Zildjian A Medium-Thin. Your Medium would probably work great in that application.
Thank you kindly Mike! I can't wait to give it a try.

Thank you! You're the man. Loving the series! I know I said that in the last video, but still. haha
Neil Peart's snare until DW made him a signature snare.
Except Neil's was 3-ply, not solid shell.
@@markbayer7261 I forgot the composition. 3 ply with rings, not steam bent....ok
Is that a 16” K Custom Special Dry crash being used as a hi hat? If so thanks!
Adam Stachelek Good eye!
Michael Dawson thanks for humoring me. Gonna figure out a version of that combo based on the Special Dry.

Totally. There's something (a big something) to be said for tuning a drum to match its inherent vibe!

Why muffle the snare.
Buddy Rich , Gene Krupa and the greats that used these , had them were unmuffled.
