Let's just say before Baramey and Vannda, there was K1J who bravely represented the world of rap and hip hop in Cambodia. It was during the time when the genre was considered an abomination to the culture by the native Khmer folks. There was no support from the industry to push it out or help it grow because the entertainment industry is owned and monopolized by the Prime Minister's family. You either conform to their ideals or have connections powerful enough to get you air time. But K1J persevered, got his music on UA-cam and was able to reach more people in Cambodia. Which gave rise to more talents such as Khmeng Khmer rapping on UA-cam in their teenage years. This is before Baramey, CG and other labels existed. As a Khmer American, I grew up listening to NWA and the other great legends in L.A. Then listening to other khmer Americans rapping in khmer but they couldn't really speak khmer. So when K1J popped up , he really captured my attention. There were other artists around back then but K1J was the only one I felt was top notched. The words he strung together were fire and the only artist who's English didn't sound FOB. Therefore, I understand if he claims the legend title. I respect that. He earned it with blood, sweat and tears. ❤
