    Thanks for sharing about the Freeze Miser. I'll have to get a few for our stock tanks. Even in Texas, you have to worry about freezing... well, maybe once or twice a year.

      And this week that freeze is going to be real! I picked up three freeze misers and hope they get the job done. Could use one more. And I've got a 100 watt bulb burning in the stairwell in garage. The wall there holds the water line to the icemaker, etc. Keeping it toasty in that little cave in the garage.

      @@rickowen6646 I went and checked the one I installed in one of the rubbermaid water tanks for my cows. It was 26 degrees and the steam was flowing. Seem to prevent the top of the water in the tank from freezing too. The Cows like it!

    Good example of the freeze miser. Any time you don't have to unfreeze a fountain is a great big plus.. Freeze fingers ever time have to thaw out a fountain in the winter.. Will have to invest in one. Have a great Christmas and stay safe and healthy'

    Insulate the hose/pipe going up to the Freeze Miser and the water will not get as cold. This will use less water. It's the temperature of the water going through the Freeze Miser that controls how much it opens up.

    When you install or even after installation, use a t-post driven in to the ground to the same depth or close to it the same depth, beside the freeze proof faucet, secure the faucet to the t-post with hose clamps, this will help protect the faucet from being broken should something happen, (someone or something running into it).

    This product certainly looks promising. I battle with frozen stock water from October to May here in Alaska. Twice a day every day, I break ice, fill the tank and run the heater for a few hours - at $0.20 per KWH the cost really goes up. My question is how cold will it work to? How cold have you seen it work at? Temps in the twenties are downright balmy for us in December; every year we get a spell of minus 20 to minus 30 for a week or two. That is when providing the cows water gets really "interesting". What truly is interesting is that the cows never seek shelter in the barn during frigid temp's; they just stand broadside to the sun all day long thinking their cow thoughts. If I can get a hold of a Freeze-Miser unit I will test it to see how cold it functions to and let you know. Love your videos, keep up the good work and merry Christmas!

    I'd like to make a suggestion. I don't know what ( if any ) you have for slope away from your hydrants, but if you do have some slope, this spring or summer ( as if you have nothing else going on ) I'd install drainage away from the hydrants with stone down to drain level from the surface around the hydrants. Water from the freeze mizer would seep through the stone down to the drain and you'd get rid of the ice rink problems .

    You should try a hudson valve float and put a constant flow disc in it for winter time; they don’t run any more water than the freeze mizer and you don’t need extra parts or plumbing to make it work
    I personally like them better than the freeze mizer for the reason of less parts. Last year On several 0 degree nights we had the water freeze from the float to the “y”; the freeze mizer side of the “y” stayed open but the float side froze
    Thank you for doing these experiments and have a merry chrismas

    Curious, as to why you don’t use large equipment tires? We use XXL tires and have our water lines buried 3’deep, when close to tire trough we dig down to 5’. This gives us about 40 / 45 degree water at trough entry. On troughs way out in pasture areas we will sink a 7-8 foot deep pipe inside the trough this allows the water to circulate ( convection) and will generally be ice free in -0 weather for quite sometime. We are not as cold as you guys are for sure, but have several weeks of sustained - o from time to time. However I did poach this idea from a SD farm that my son visited. Just an idea for you....

    Hi Mike and Erin,
    🎄Merry Christmas ✝️. I think you might get into trouble with a deep freeze below zero and complacent use of Freeze Master. I know this because moving water will freeze if cold enough. I.r. #1 that's how rivers freeze over solid. I.r. #2 our Large outside heat exchangers at work (steel mill) would freeze up if we didn't put in antifreeze in the water to prevent freezing damage.
    🎊Good luck in the new year 🎉

    • @nebraskafarmer9015
      @nebraskafarmer9015 4 роки тому

      I was thinking the same thing. The cattle will drink the tank down during the day, it's at night that it would overflow. Building brackets to lower the float 8" to 10" more inches would probably solve the problem.

    Would putting a 50 foot hose between the valve (float) and the miser in the stock tank help keep the water warm enough to keep it from freezing? If the hose has below 32 degree water running through it because of the Freeze Miser, then maybe it would help keep the rest of the water from freezing... Just a thought...

    Just a note about the freeze miser: I noticed that it's not the outdoor temperature that matters. It's the temperature of the water inside the device. When that water hits 37 F, the drip begins. Water colder = more, bigger drip. I think it's going to work. 'Hope so, temps down to 0 here in north Texas for Tuesday morning!
