That is so cool. All the modern, young o/o’s think is cool to see how low they can drop their trucks down, and then a King of trucks pulls on the lot standing tall.
Drove 3408 back in the 70s love to hear it idle and definitely love to hear the turbo spool up one of the best engines ever made.
Just sounds like a big 7.3 powerstroke to me

I was never a trucker, never drove a big rig, or even rode in one, but as a child growing up in the 70s to mid 80s I loved big rigs, and especially loved Kenworth's. You can thank the shows "Movin On", "BJ & The Bear", and the original "Smokey & The Bandit" movie, along with all the big rig books I read at the library for that.
While I also loved the other makes, like Peterbilt, Freightliner, Mack, and GMC, Kenworth's to me were like the Cadillac's of big rigs from that era, with all that glorious shiny chrome, and the hi level of creature comforts described in the books I read.
I worked for Kenworth. Great company and great trucks.

I hung on to a 3408 engine for many years. A guy from Beaver Utah finally talked me out of it. I never heard what he put it in.
That sounds as sweet as a Scania V8 to me. V8s in trucks are awsome! I'm glad i get to hear them allmost every day here in Sweden :)

The Scania V8 is actually an American engine design as it was designed by Mack and shared with Scania.

The Cat 3408 engine was very popular in Australia as a road train engine. I never drove it, but, from what I've heard, from the perspectives of maintenance and fuel consumption, the Mack E9 motor was better. That engine I drove and maintained. That said, the 3408 is a legendary engine, and it sounds good too (I'm a sucker for a good V8😂).

Trucks sounded like real trucks back then but these days trucks are getting quite and sounding like cars
That's a mix of the EPA getting lots of crap in the exhaust systems and truck companies pandering to those who don't want to hear their trucks so they can talk on the phone easier. I like to hear the rumble and whistle.

I've always heard these 3408 engines with a deep burly hum but this one growls like a 3406b. Does it have something to do with straight piping?
The 3408 had a different angle on the V than any other V-8 that being said the rod journals on the crankshaft looked like they were partially sheered I think that was the reason for the distinct sound that engine had I have never heard any other V-8 s sound like them
@@davidsignor7931 Caterpillar's signature of their old school engines. The 3408E and 3412E are different level monsters. There's a few videos of them on the dynos and could only imagine how they'd sound in a rig
Personally when I worked with a dump I don't know if we could have held one down on the dump it would have taken a great tire composition to get enough grip we had problems when we put something on that would put 450 on the ground which back in the late 80's early 90's was a lot

@@davidsignor7931 now that i think about it i think it was just a rebuild test run but they had some 3412s nd 3508(sounds good too) on a computer recording it's stats. The 08E's are said 2 be too big/heavy for road tractors but i couldn't imagine there'd be anything that you couldn't haul with that kinda fire power
Never a jake available for the 3408 correct? Bummer...
CAT had an engine brake, called a "brake saver", for over the road trucks. It add extra weight and you could overheat it. Not the best set up.

I have an old 7.3 power stroke that has bigger injectors. It’ll roll coal like nobody’s business. I do it just to piss off the snow flakes
