We Tried A Treadmill Desk Because Sitting At Work Is Killing Us

  • Ever since we found out that sitting at work is killing us, a bunch of my co-workers at Business Insider have gone all-in on standing desks.
Standing all day gets boring, though, and it makes people restless. So, in our search for a better work desk that won't kill you, we stumbled upon this treadmill desk by LifeSpan.
Some of my co-workers spent an entire day working on the treadmill desk. How hard is it to walk and work at the same time? Watch the video to find out.

I mean, I think it should be set to whichever speed you're used to walking.
Walking that slow for me is more uncomfortable than being hunched over for a few hours- I have pretty poor balance, so walking slowly causes me to stumble and it ain't gonna be pretty if I knock over the computer off the desk.

@@pure555 I'm doing it right now. I am a programmer and have to type a LOT. I have very few problems at 2.5 mph and do it for about 12 miles per day. I guess it's not for everyone judging by blue-shirt's reaction, but I can assure you that if you are a good typist you will be able to type and work while walking. Mouse work is, however, a bit more difficult as they noted in the video. It is harder to be precise with the mouse and so if your work involves a lot of mouse work, you may have to slow down and/or just not use a walking desk.

What’s so strange is that I can genuinely focus more when I’m walking. Im so jittery and can’t sit still at a desk. I studied my flashcards for the entire day + attended some zoom lectures all on my phone while walking around the house and I got so much more done… I’m at 17,000 steps.

I love my new treadmill desk. I have been using it for 3 weeks now and it will change my life! Before I barely made it up to 3ooo steps a day. Now I have to be careful to take enough brakes. I have between 10-16k steps per day now and I am sure in 6 months I will have doubled this! I am heavily overweight and I know it will be so great to my health because I already feel positive changes! Love it! ❤️

I still love it! I use it nearly every day and I feel much better with it. After using it for 6 weeks I had to take a 6 week break to recover - I just overused it and my body started hurting badly. After the break I slowly started again. If it weren't for the pandemic and the depression and feeling of utter exhaustion it gave me, I would be much fitter now - but the desk saved me from gaining another 10 kilo. I do between 2000 and 8000 steps now per day - depending on my exhaustion level (and sleep level, I really have a struggle with that).
My only problem is my desk. I have an IKEA desk and it is wobbling so hard now when I am walking it is hard to read on the screen - I am thinking of either getting a better desk or detaching the monitor from the desk somehow. IKEA is definitely not sturdy enough for the constant movement.
btw, the perfect shoes for the treadmill are freet flex - they are super comfy and pretty quiet.

So refreshing to see an honest pros and cons presentation. I've been on a standing desk for 5 months, standing often 12 hours a day at the desk, i have a high chair to rest now and then. The standing position completely changes the body; I'm 56, at the beginning my legs started to swell, doubled in size, i felt like hell for a whole week. Now, I'm tireless, i can hike a whole day, at the end of the day my legs feel still strong. Where people usually sit and wait, i feel awkward sitting now. I'd say we're genetically designed to stand, walk, run every waking hour. Decades of sitting at a desk, the standing position revolutionized my metabolism, tripled my energy.

sounds awesome! I hope to get a treadmill desk, a lot of research on how terrible sitting is.

    • @Paroissien
      @Paroissien 7 років тому +1

6 months after my previous message, the standing position is natural, it's 5pm, I woke up at 5am, i worked all day standing at the desk and didn't feel the need to sit once, maybe I'll sit a little in an hour. Still you should know, i have a very bulky comfortable training bike that i designed to sit at the desk, but even though it is very stable and smooth, it doesn't offer the keyboard typing comfort that i need for speed and precision, and steady focus on the screen, the bike gets annoying, treadmill WILL BE UNSTABLE. So i had to give up any exercise while typing, any movement added to the typing motor function. But i noticed as soon as you pause a while to think you shift left and right leg like a walking movement, anyway it's very dynamic as it is, i wouldn't add any bike, and especially not a treadmill.

I own the smoothest, most stable, comfy training machine there is for a desk, a bike, and it is impossible to keep one's job of editor on a computer while exercising on it; it will only be worse on a treadmill, hundred percent sure. I've been editing for 3 decades (in French). I understand it's a beautiful dream and people want to believe it, but it is not realistic. Keep your treadmill on the side and use it on your break hour while watching those beautiful UA-cam video of hiking/biking in nature filmed for that purpose.

    2. Treadmills that stop/start with your walking are better. That allows you to stop walking for a moment, maybe when you're typing an email or clicking on a link etc. Then you can continue walking again when ready. Much better.

Now it is an era where faster adaptability is considered as high prestigious just like user of Iphone5 is considered classier than a user of Iphone4 or 3. Here I guess, your product is also going to become "a fabulous item" in the society because of its unique functional identity. I am living in India & just imported a desk from www.standbyyourdesk.com/ which is not available in my locality. Talking logically, this new product should not be appreciated by my friends but the situation is against of all logics and most of my friends have ordered it even high shipment risk exist in India.

Keep a speed of 3 on an incline of 3, and you'd have burnt 1000 calories in an 8-hour day without going to the gym. It might not be the most comfortable way to work, but you'll get the hang of it. The benefits far outweigh the adjustments' effort

The problem with trying to work while biking is that there is nothing to keep you going. You have to will your legs to churn. I am thinking that maybe with enough practice you could train yourself to always churn your legs on a bike but I would think that at the beginning, it would be difficult to just not forget to pedal. With treadmills, you have no choice but to walk or else you get pushed back away from the desk. You cannot forget to do it. And we spend our lifetimes developing the skill to walk without thinking about it so it's kind of second nature anyway.

That Greek putz looked like he was having an easy walk but he was so intent on hating the idea. He will hurt the company someday with his piss-weak mentality. I think the key to the treadmill desk is finding the right speed to facilitate the work tasks. Go as slow as possible if you need to.

I'm sorry that your employees who think it sucks have zero balance. I walk 10 miles a day at my job using my treadmill desk. I walk 1.5-2.0 mph. I love it. 911 operators are now all switching to these as well because of the recent study that sitting more than 10 hours a day will put you in a 20 year earlier grave.

    • @patricediana2959

Thanks for your comments Jason! I just ordered a treadmill desk today and I'm looking forward to it! My legs and butt are tired of sitting all day! I work out in the morning and at night, but I'd love to be doing part of that during the day. I was waiting for these guys to turn a corner and start enjoying it. I hope I am as happy as you are!
Update: I got the treadmill in April and am very happy with it. I love the desk the most and actually spend more time standing than walking. I do walk when I need to get my step count over 10,000, and it's fine. i have to walk at 1.5 to get it to register on the Fitbit. This has been an easy pace to do most of my transactions, although sometimes it's hard to hold the mouse still. BTW, recent article said The cool companies, cool executives are not driving BMWs, they're on treadmills. www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-get-up-20140731-story.html. Ha!

Um...maybe the guy who invented the computer unicycle was right, you need some stability to work on the computer, and having your hands and sometimes your weight over the desktop isnt the natural way of walking, might be better for your feet than just standing still but i suspect it might not be as good for your back overall. You dont really need to do cardio per se, just need enough resistance to move your feet steadily and have a balanced seat.
