He was our family friend. Really close to my maternal grandmother. He would visit my grandmother every time he used to come to Kashmir. My grandmother always tells me about him every time I meet her. It's unfortunate that I was never able to meet him as I was born 5 years after his death 😢
May his soul rest in peace.
hope yk they makin my ass declaim one of his poems in school. You should tell his family this
I feel very proud that he is from my Kashmir valley ...
Awe-inspiring. Agha Shahid Ali is my favourite poet.
Love from Srinagar Kashmir
Prof Agha was a versatile, many-faceted genius. He composed poems in a variety of forms and genre. His creative imagination encompassed music, history, folklore, anthropology, and metaphysics.
Amitav Ghosh sums up A.S. Ali's oeuvre in a succinct comment: " sorrow has no finer mask than a studied lightness of manner". The epigraph to his poem Leaving Sonora reads: " living in the desert has taught me to go inside myself for shade". He died, like his beloved mother, of brain tumour. He was barely 52 .
