This is a beautifully done video. I disassembled my MFC-J4410DW, removed the ink absorber box, and cleaned everything out, including thoroughly washing out and drying the pads. After reassembly, it works, but the status still says, "Ink Absorber Near Full". I reset the purge and flush counters, and still get that message. Then I found your other video about also clearing the FLSBK and FLSCL counters. THAT did the trick. No more error status. Thank you!

So relieved to see your post - I have the same model, 12 years old but still as good as new except for the "ink absorber near full" message LOL. I am ordering a replacement box but it doesn't come with installation instructions, this video will be invaluable as will your commentary for this model in particular! Thank you!

Thank you! Just successfully cleaned my ink absorber box and reset purge count on my J4310 DW. I had to follow the alternate instructions (in comments) to get in maintenance mode and then after resetting purge, I had to power off and on to fully clear message. Printer is working great. I could not be more pleased :)

Brilliant, thanks, solved the problem. Video not always very clear but good enough to do what really matters. Messy business though, with all that ink in the absorber! I got the "absorber full" message afterwards as well, but managed to reset that too. Thanks for posting this, saved me the purchase of a new printer.

MFC-J4510DW: Thanks for taking the time to produce this video...just some FYI for those trying to clear messages, etc...after removing the 'chip' attached to the absorber box it became apparent that the chip is actually a moisture detector whereby if it is too moist, (i.e. full of ink) then no matter what you do to clear messages, if the felts are wet this will generate the Error 46/Ink Absorber Pad Full error...all the magic keystrokes, number codes or finagling won't clear this error until you address the full pads which I simply removed rinsed under warm water, then let dry and reassembled...Hope this helps someone down the line...Good luck.

That IS helpful, thanks! I am working on mine right now, and I as guessing that's all it was (detecting resistance across two metal points), and that you want those pads to be REALLY dry before you put this all back together.

@@cowsongs This suggests an even easier fix. Just leave the contacts unplugged, throw away most of the felt (leave a piece in contact with the ink tubes to stop them clogging), and reseal the box with waterproof tape (eg silicon plumbers'). Sure, somewhere north of 20,000 pages the box is going to overflow and maybe make a mess, but by that time the print heads or feeder will have worn out anyway.

Thanks for posting this video. I used it to guide me thru disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly of a J4420 printer. The only change I made was to remove the electrical connector that goes to the ink
Printer tray in order to remove the tray. The little electrical board is attached to the tray and difficult to remove while trying to remove the tray from the printer. It was much easier to remove the board after the tray was completely removed, everything else worked out well. I was surprised to see how much ink was stored in the tray! Seems like a waste of a lot of expensive ink in that tray!!

Thanks for this video!!!! I wondered what was involved. Probably not an easy task for the lay person, but easy for this retired EE.
***I have a brother MFC-J4710DW that's run trouble free for 10-12yrs!!!! I always used the OEM ink, not the cheaper generic water based 3rd party inks.
--> Finally my ink absorber got full, and I need my printer back TODAY. So I'll perform the cleaning fix you suggest here.

Thanks for your video, great help with an old 2nd hand printer!
A little tip for cleaning the 2nd absorber pad at 3:09. I couldn't lift any ink (seemed very dry), so I put a little amount of water on the paper towel and dabbed the pad ... it loosened up the dry ink from the pad. Repeated a few times with wet then dry paper towels and the pad ended up almost ink free.

Brilliant. Excellent instructions relatively easy to follow. Messy. Saved my printer and all my new ink cartridges won't have to go in the bin. One comment is that if one understands that the support arm has a small plastic protuberance at the rear end (back) then gentle levering releases the arm. Otherwise lots of sweat is involved. PS Brother support says only their technicians can do it, Crap.

But I entered the printer's maintenance mode using the info in your other video - *(Fix Ink Absorber Pad Full - Reset the PURGE and FLUSH Counter on Brother Printer (Error 46)* - and after resetting BOTH the 'purge' and 'flush' counters... my printer then was working fine! I tried the syringe / cleaning fluid / print head cleaning method.. but immediately afterwards the machine will only print black, anything of colour is coming out completely blank. I've also got a Brother J5720-DW, practically brand new with blocked colour nozzles. :'(
I guess I'll try syringe clean method on that next. And be extremely gentle pumping the cleaning fluid through.

I’m going to make a vid next on manually cleaning the print head and nozzles. When you used the syringe method, did you use distilled water or isopropyl alcohol ? Did you let it sit for a good 5/10 mins to absorb ? Check the print head itself is clean too~ dampen a folded paper towel and move the print head onto it (unplug the printer mid-print so you can freely move the print head). Let it sit on the towel for a while (at least 15mins) then move it over the towel a number of times.

    Great video.
Just as a point, the left (small) pad can become swollen from absorbing too much ink and cause smearing on the print head. I was able to reach it without disassembly and pat it with a paper towel slightly damp with diluted Windex. (about 10:1 Water:Windex), repeating until the pad was almost ink free. (I found it amazing, how much ink it can hold.)
    Disclaimer:
Using any kind of solvent is not recommended by the manufacturer, so use it at your own risk. I've found that diluted Windex appears to be safe for all printers I've owned.
    HP 560/C
    HP 990/C
    Epson Workforce 600
    Brother MFC-J4420DW (current printer)
Make sure it is diluted and allow the sponge pad to dry before operating the printer. You can accelerate the process by blotting it with a paper towel moistened with distilled water a few times, then use a dry paper towel.
Note: I have not attempted to use this solution to purge the heads on any printer. I have used it to surface clean the print head jets. Remember, the key word is blotting, avoid any forceful wiping.

I think she realized what she had done, ordered new inks and quickly signed off. Anyhoo... I've got a full absorber pad. How do you know if the plastic tray needs to be replaced? What kind of tape did you use to close the felts pad case? Do you have to protect the printer heads in any way? I think I could make the repair easily enough if I could just plug in a new part.

Hello there,Thanks for the video. My pads are drying so I have as of now not reassembled....however I located a service manual for this model MFCJ4620DW and when one reaches the waste Ink absorber box (BTW that's Brother PN : LET 43300 on the assembly ) the instructions are not to remove the chip but instead to follow the wiring from the chip back to the circuit board ( about 7 inches ) and disconnect it there not at the absorber box.
P.S. My box's felt was swimming in "waste ink".

Hi Know How, I've just finished dismantling my MFC-J4610DW (yay but eeeeek) and am ready to wash the ink pads. I wondered about the re-taping down of the plastic. I see that a section of the plastic is full of holes so presumably the holes need to remain untaped? And what to use for taping the rest - cellotape? 🙏

    • @Knowhow1
      @Knowhow1  3 роки тому

Electrical or duct tape would work, or masking tape. I wouldn’t think cellotape would have enough grip on the plastic and might come apart. Only tape the edges down, and any tears. Try to leave the breather holes untaped as much as you can :)

  • @michaelgreen1071

    Great help, thank you
Unfortunately my MFC-J6930DW (with it's ink absorber saturated) is constructed significantly differently, so removing the scanner cover does not seem to be as easy as "pushing away from you", the scan cover arm is also a bit more tricky to unclip.
In the MFC-J9630DW the ink absorber box is accessed from the bottom, it's a rectangular box held in by two screws, thus easy to remove.
However, the problem on mine is the 'ink absorber pad' under the cartridges and it's 'wick' that descends through the bottom of the printer into the 'ink absorber box'
It's become saturated after many attempts to fix 'smudged ink' by using the clean printheads maintenance routine.
While I can remove the 'ink absorber box' from below... getting inside the machine to access the 'ink absorber pad & it's wick' is proving probematic!

Because of the error message, I couldn’t get the purge to go through. After I did another reset, the purge started. Afterward, I was able to print 1 light page before the error came back. I contacted brother and after I explained what I already did, they recommended doing a purge as well. They then said I needed to replace the box. I have found them online, but I just don’t understand why a new bow would work when my cleaned, dried and taped box didn’t. I know this worked for other people, but could there be some sort of sensor that isn’t letting the error clear?

    • @Knowhow1
      @Knowhow1  2 роки тому +1

Don’t waste your money on a new box if you’ve already cleaned yours. To resolve the error msg - Turn off your printer to do a hard reset - unplug after shutting down for at least 10 mins. If error msg is still there, you need to reset the counters again. Don’t forget the flush colour and black counters and the purge count. As for the light pages it’s either: ink nozzles need cleaning by either power purging or if that doesn’t work after at least 3 attempts, or the print head needs cleaning (via settings) or it could be paper scraps on the print head.

The chip is shown at 2:28 of the video - it's at the front of the box. The absorber box has plastic clips that should easily clip into place. Check to see if there's any white plastic pieces around or on the absorber which show signs of being snapped or broken since yours was already dislodged. Good luck and let me know if you need anything else

You might need it slowly dismantle it again and thoroughly check for any debris or tiny paper pieces in the top end of the printer and paper feed. First check there’s nothing behind the print head- move the print head to the centre by pressing the x / cancel or stop / exit button. Turn off and unplug power at the wall. See if there’s any visible obstructions / paper / staples / hard ink residue behind the print head- move it slightly if you need to. Plug in and turn back on and hopefully the error is gone. If not, take apart and have a very thorough check if anything became in the paper feed areas while you had dismantled it for the ink absorber

SOOOO. I see I was not the only one that had an error message EXPORT TO CARD appear when entering the maintenance mode after cleaning the absorber pads and attempting to clear the purge in the maintenance mode....and failing at the effort.. After hours of digging I found this process that works. In the Brother service manual section 5-4 - LIST OF MAINTENANCE MODE FUNCTIONS... Maintenance Mode 46 is listed as BACKUP 0F MACHINE INFORMATION.
Going down to Mode number 76 is listed as PURGE OPERATION. The page is 5-54 section 1.3.29. Here one can perform different purges as well as reset the purge or flushing count. Here are the instructions from the BROTHER SERVICE MANUAL for model MFCJ4620DW - RESETTING purge or flushing count.
1 ) Press 8 and O keys in this order in the initial stage of the maintenance mode to call up the machine's log information ( maintenance Mode 80 ) refer to section 1.3.32 in this chapter.
2 ) Press the Mono Start Key several times until the purge or flushing count appears on the LCD display.( mine took about 25 pushes)
3 ) Press the 2,7,8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge or flushing count. The machine automatically returns to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.
The procedure shown in Know How's post works after this procedure is performed, so perhaps the method I found in some cases must be used to reset after a cleaning of the Absorber Pads, at least in some cases. When my printer returned to normal mode the Absorber pad is nearly full message still displayed, however this does not stop the printer from printing. I printed an image off of my desktop and the message then disappeared and I am back to normal at this point. Apparently there are maintenance mode codes and error codes...well of course there are !!!
