Love your tutorials. Steady camera good light. Straightforward instructions that a non mechanical person like me can follow. Love that you leave the boopers in too as we can all learn from those. Good job Dude
Dude I always had an environmental clean up job when useing those drain pans so I stopped removing the filler cap dipstick and filter until most if it had drained, top tip😉
Hi, I have astra h 1.7 (74kW) and needs oil change. The car just did 91k miles and the last change was in 84k less than a year ago with 5w30 . My question is what kind of oil should I choose for the change now and can I change it Infront of my house ( on the roa bcz I dont have a drive ) thank you !
The 1.7(74KW) is a CDTi. The recommended engine oil for this engine is ACEA C3 5W30 or ACEA C3 5W40. Please check with your local laws and rules on carrying out car repairs or maintenance on a public road.
10w 40 mate I bet the car is older, more wear and tear on engine so use thicker oil ull get longer lasting engine, I personally think you would only put 5w 30 if it was few years old car or new opel astra, what year the car
Great work, but that sump plug isn't designed for a copper washer. If the inbuilt rubber ring on the sump plug is not sealing you should just replace the sump plug with a new one.
Hi I went for a drive yesterday and when I parked up I thought to check my oil level as I haven't done so before. When I took the dipstick out I noticed white smoke coming from the dipstick tube, is this normal? I've had this car 2 months and I got it second hand. I don't know a lot about engines or cars as this is my first car. It's a 1.4 Astra H
Hi George, Not unusual to get a small big of moisture build up in the engine but it burns off when the engine is running. Best to check the following: 1.Visually check you oil and coolant levels first, dipstick and coolant levels should be between Min and Max. 2.Remove and check the inside of the oil filler cap, what colour is the residue, black or creamy sludge? Black is good. 3.Remove the coolant expansion tank cap, look in and does the coolant appear clear or muddy? Mainly clear is good. Do not do this when the engine is running or when it is hot. Wait for at least 10 or more minutes after the engine has been switched off as you may get inaccurate readings.
Driveway Dudes Thanks for the reply. I checked my oil level, it is just above the min mark so I'm going to get that topped up today. I removed the oil filler cap and the oil was black but on the rim there was a bit of brown sludge. The coolant levels are normal and it is normal colour. I don't drive long journeys, only to and from work about 25 minutes each way
When topping up do it slowly and a small amount at a time then let it stand. It may take several minutes for it to register on the dipstick. It does not need to be Max, 1/2 - 3/4 is good. Wipe the sludge off and check again in a few days to a week. If when checking again you find coffee cream coloured sludge then you may have to investigate further though it could be a minor thing like moisture or condensation.
Hi Kian. In lieu of user manuals, we use online lubricant advisor tools which can be found online by googling them. We stick to using ones made for the UK/Irish market as fuel/temperature conditions can vary from region to region which may effect the recommended oil.
For some unknown reason there are two types of oil filters made by Mann and other brands for the 1.4 Astra H 1. Mann oil Filter HU712/8x is 87mm height 2. Mann Oil Filter HU6122X is 103mm height Ideally you would need to take out your old filter and measure it. Guest presenter Jonathan was lucky he ordered the correct one first time. Driveway Dudes - Paul
My astra is a 1.4 z14xep and some comments saying to use a 24mm socket to remove the oil filter are wrong, measure the cap yourself 24mm is way too small wasted my time buying the wrong spanner
I’m never paying for an oil change again. They’ve overfilled it by loadss, it goes about 3 inches above the maximum line. I really don’t know how they fucked it up that bad. But there isn’t any smoke or anything coming out the car, so I don’t think that it’s done anything too bad just yet. So I’m going to have to drain my oil a little bit at a time until it’s on the right level. Absolute piss take
how do you know youve tightened the filter cap back up 25 newtons with just a pair of grips? I have the correct 27 socket, how do i gauge the tightness?
Hi Hambag2009. In this scenario guest presenter Jonathan used his previous vehicle servicing experience to gauge how tight the oil filter housing cap was with the grips. After running the car and driving it, there were no leaks. I can completely understand and appreciate your question and I would always advise to use a torque wrench for accurate results, but without the right tools available at the time, you do what you can. Jonathan did later invest in a torque wrench and a set of oil filter housing cap removal sockets for future use, and found that his oil filter housing cap was more or less at the correct tightness. Driveway Dudes - Will
ok thanks. ive always been told tighten, but not 'too' tight, and just check that its fitted squarely. check after first test drive for any leaks, if not, jobs a good 'un!
Hey, thanks for your reply. I bought the same car. I changed it's oil with 5/40 and id decreased. I had to add more than 2 litres oil un my engine. As i see here 5/30 c3 is the wright one for this car.
It doesn't seem like a lot but what would you be comparing it too? It's the torque decided by Opel/Vauxhall/GM and it's proven to work for this particular task. Other brands/models have different torques and it's always best to follow manufacturers recommendations to avoid possible issues occurring.
First few minutes into the video and I thought.. This guys a complete amateur, mole grips, drops oil plug, oil all over the driveway, hang on that's average Joe, just like the rest of us, what could possibly go wrong!... Thank you
I really like that you provide alternative tools to use in case someone doesn't have something. Really helps. Thanks
My favorite part is when the oil made the great escape
Love your tutorials. Steady camera good light. Straightforward instructions that a non mechanical person like me can follow. Love that you leave the boopers in too as we can all learn from those. Good job Dude
I love the swearing when the oil goes everywhere. So true to life for all of us 😂
Dude I always had an environmental clean up job when useing those drain pans so I stopped removing the filler cap dipstick and filter until most if it had drained, top tip😉
It's probably a good idea to have some rags lying about to catch or soak up spillage
Great video and well instructed 👏🏻
3:34 - 4:28 is my favourite sequence. 'lube it up a bit'. Also useful video for the car parts too.
Great video! Jus a question. Does the Astra has a floor panel! I just bought one and noticed it didn’t have one so I could see the floor from above
I have a astra h 1.6 petrol and I use 5w30 oil but I have to top it up every 3 months would it be okay to use 5w40 instead
so detailed and so real. thank you sir.
This guy is a bag of nerves but thanks, you give me all the tips i need to do my own oil change... thanks
2:35 I have the exact same car and engine but I had to use a 24mm socket.
What way did you turn the sump nut on the astra to un doo? Thanks
Lube it up ... reinsert my dipstick ... you are pure class my Gaelic friend 😆
Good vid. One criticism: use a 24mm socket to remove/replace the filter top if you have one, NOT a mole wrench.
Needs must while being careful not to damage/break anything
Do I use engen flush?

classic lol, that was me a few weeks back as well, have you got a vid on how to change a egr valve on that astra?
Sorry - a question do you have tutorial on changing fuel injectors?
Try hitting it with an hammer

Just different badges, otherwise identical

What specific oil do I need for an 08 model?

That intro song just reminds me of Filthy Frank can't help it lol
What tool did you use to remove the slump plug?
It's a T45 torx
I noticed your Astra had done 172000 miles, how many miles has it done now?
About another 10k

Hi Infinity vidz help the helpless, You should be able to get one or more in your local motor parts store or online :)

If only the sump plug was that easy to get off, been at mine for ages and it wont come off aha
how not to do it

Best to refer to your owners handbook/user manual.
Typically Irish man 💚
10NM? that sounds like too little torque, doesn't it?
