  • As described in this video, • [4K60] Four AVR SD60Ms... , starting in early 2022, the Homer City Generating Station began receiving coal from the Nelms 2 mine in West Virginia. In February 2023, Homer City announced that it was ending coal-fired operations, citing several factors. Consequently, this late January 2023 move would prove to be the last of the AVR coal trains. I took time off from work and drove up from Washington, DC, at night. When I stopped by the interchange to make sure the train had arrived, I happened upon WE delivering the consist, featuring the GP35 - SD40 trio that these trains tended to use. The following morning, myself, @NS5350 and @ConwayProductions would chase the run from Bruceton to Mars, PA. I had to get back to work, but they would record the light power returning to Pittsburgh.
These trains originated on the Wheeling & Lake Erie, were interchanged to the AVR, and then handed off to the Buffalo & Pittsburgh for final delivery. The AVR portion of the routing was the only portion that consistently ran in daylight, and was also the closest to my house. Besides the all-shortline routing, I was obsessed with the AVR runs because they often required helpers, and because they were the only trains to use the Pittsburgh & Western subdivision in daylight.

My special needs son says that there are ways to use combustion and still protect the environment like planting more trees 🌳 because they are natural air purifiers and oxygen tanks and using fuel cells for carbon capture.

Thanx for documenting this. That kinda sucks that the power generating station closed. I like coal power and coal trains.

The loss of traffic is unfortunate, but it is what it is.

I grew up in greenfield I recognize that Glenwood tower like a gem. Im sure this aint the last coal we ever gonna see on the AVR but still a shame there aint as much as there was.

I hope not, but it seems unlikely; the AVR/B&P no longer have any online customers for coal, so there's nothing for them to deliver. B&P still serves the Penfield mine, but their regular trains run north, and the irregular southbound moves they did this summer ran with/used NS and CSX consists/routings. Unless there's more shipments from Nelms heading north, AVR's out of the way, Bailey and Loveridge are the only mines south of them on the network, and they're served by the Class 1s.

Thank you! To answer the question before it was edited, they came down with three units (6002, 6003, 6004). There's a small grade between Bruceton and the Bruceton tunnel, but from there to Glenwood the line follows the river downhill. I didn't do a great job showing it, but they picked up a helper out of Glenwood to handle the Bakerstown grade.

Will WE still drop off natural gas cars for the AVR to pick up and will AVR take them to the siding for the B&P to take and will the AVR run light back

Climate con 2024,, Coal fired power plants will be back, Wind mills can't do it like a good ole coal fired power plant, besides with scrubbers they are super clean. Great looking SD60's ! They look brand new. Sound good also, when in doubt, notch it out! Cool video, Best regards, chuck.

My special needs son agrees with you on that completely! He says that there are ways to use combustion and still protect the environment like using fuel cells for carbon capture and planting more trees 🌳 because they are natural air purifiers and oxygen tanks. He also says that wind turbines spoil the scenery and that the wind doesn't blow nonstop forever so they should not relied on so much.

@@gretchenchadwick8343 You have a smart son there Gretchen. He is seeing through the chafe dispersed by the government and media. Trees and plants love carbon dioxide. Government would rather push this leftist narrative. Discernment is a wonderful thing! Best regards Chuck
