I owned a 72 510 Datsun 2 door for 11 years. Had a SSS L16 engine with a 200SX 5 speed. Lowered 2 inches with wide tires and Mini Lites. Enjoyed humbling Beemers and Porsches on back roads of the northwest. Easy to work on and FUN to drive. One of the best rides I ever had. Sorry I sold it.

When my son was 16 I bought him a 1969 510 2 door as his 1st car. He didn’t think much of it then until one day he stopped at a red light and a guy with a Ferrari asked him to roll down his window and complimented him on what a great car he had. He came home confused and it was history from there. We still have the car by the way.

I am truly happy to own a 510. Sadly many young people these days will never experience what it's like to drive a car that is fully mechanical.

I've owned a 68, 70, and two 72 510s, I still have one in my garage today. I've dreamed of the opportunity to drive the legendary #46 BRE 510, and I'm not too proud to admit I'm more than a little jealous of Alex. Being that he races IndyCar I respect his qualifications as a driver, but as a 510 freak, the massive gap in his experience with "classic race cars" makes this vid hard for me to watch. Had Alex known how to drive a car with semi trailing arm rear suspension, this would have been a very different experience for him.
Through the travel of the 510's rear suspension, the tires shift camber (direction). This creates what is called "trail through steering" where the car literally steers from the rear wheels when the car rolls in cornering. This camber shift allows you to accelerate much early through a turn. Done right, the 510 will literally jump out of corners like a shot. This is what made it's handling legendary as Alex said, but unfortunately he didn't know how to tap into what makes this car great. The little old 510 still holds track records at Laguna Seca, Sonoma, and Willow Springs.

He is used to a car that gets lose when you look at the gas pedal...I want to drive one of these so bad and you're right you can sorta just be at full throttle the keep the car inside a turn with a little breaks to put the weight on the front and you can full speed through a corner almost

I owned 4 Datsun 510’s back in the 80’s and nothing I’ve ever owned or driven since gave me as much thrill to drive as the 510’s, and they were so easy to modify and work on to

My God....I miss my 510. Had one built with 40DCOE's (twin) with full race mods. This Datsun was the one that inspired me to build mine. If I can, I want to build one more before I die....LOVED that car. Have had Datsun's since 1970. 1200 fastback,B210,280Z,1600 roadster,Race built but street leagal510 and a Nissan Maxima.....

I remember watching the BRE 510's back before the highschoolzoic era. There was NO technology to speak of,just a good car & skill. My heart still aches for those days. And cars like these. Truly a driver's car!

I remember these racing. I wanted one. Finally was able to get one. A ‘71 four door stock. So much fun to drive.
I always marveled that a small boxy car could be such a good race car. Till I drove one.

There is nothing like a built L-series Datsun engine in a 510. I have a lowered 1971 with an L-20 B, U67 head, dogleg 5 speed and a welded differential. I am collecting vintage race parts to build an x-cross car. I had a 1970 510 back in the day and have never gotten over it. The local Datsun dealer raced a 510 and I had lots of opportunities to look it over.

PROPS TO YOU, Alex Lloyd, for praising the car's simplicity. It is true that modern cars aid the driver, but on the other hand, you have to KNOW how to drive a raw, basic race car like the BRE 510. I'll take that over traction control, paddle shifters etc. all day long and this is a sweet little racer. Thank you for your honest review.

Yep I had a 510 back in 76 it was a mess..500 bucks at the wreckers.. and I built it up to a 3/4 race cam with webbers and bigger brakes...discs on the back...(it was a 69 import) that car out handled everything on the road. I did put bigger sway bars on it and I was never scared to go into a corner without brakes before the other guy. I really wished I had raced it on a circuit...sooo much fun.

My '72 510 was my favourite car, and it cornered so well that two different people at different times started preying going into a corner. It was a dream to throw around and never lose control but my L16 never got near the HP these babies got! 180-190 HP from an L16 is impressive to say the least. I'd still buy one today, but just for the track days since I don't drive cars on the road anymore...too many self indulgent cellphone addicts out there. That's why my bicycle has a camera and car horns on it with a 6000 lumen headlight and it's still risky. The wreckers near here has about 10 510 rear ends with axles as soon as you enter the gates for people building small race cars, good choice. That's why it was referred to as the Japanese Beamer. The main difference, mine cost $500 ready to drive with a Paddy Hopkirk Carerra drivers seat and a Momo 12" steering wheel worth what I paid for the car. (bit of a wrist breaker)

510 was the best car for it's time! I never found one, though I had the quirky '67 411 4 door with the 1189cc engine and I got wheel chirp in 2nd AND 3rd. Had to fab a sway bar for it though. B210 and the F10 where also really fun cars. Had a friend who took his moms F10 rally racing all the time.

The chin spoiler is not there to create downforce. But it IS there to reduce front-end-lift from air building up under the nose of the car and to reduce drag by making it bypass the draggy open underside. Some performance cars have gone as far as to have aerodynamic belly pans underneath to deal with the latter.

The funny thing was, these were strictly Mom-get-groceries cars on the street. The "tuner" versions didn't turn up until years later, oddly enough. The shame is though that you have a very, very hard time finding one that hasn't been (to be honest) trashed over the years by enthusiastic but untutored hot rodders. This car was actually an answer to the BMW 1600, and it was a slap in the face to the Germans. It was every bit as good on the track (with BRE and others) and better on the street. Oh, and by the way: cheaper.

Great Video but Alex has it wrong on the transmission. The 5-speed is actually from a SR311 Roadster. The 240Z never had a 5 speed. The first year a 5 speed was available in a Z car was 1978. The same is true of the pickups (since Z's and pickups shared the same transmission). The reason the Roadster 5 speed was so good is that it had cone syncros rather than ring type.

    • @bluestripes1
      @bluestripes1 9 років тому +4

Not true, the European market and Japanese market 240z had an optional 5 speed transmission. This transmission is the same three peice that came in the SRL311 except with a different bellhousing to mate to the L series engine found in the Z and 510. The EDM 240z 5 speed transmission is the only trans that is FIA legal in the Datsun 510 and bolts in without modification to the shifter hole or mounting position.
