So pleasantly surprised to see you've got this one up! Thank you so much, your videos are amazing. Absolutely one of my favourite Beatles songs for it's absurdity in sound and lyrics while still managing to be a disharmonious united whole. It's just unique and in it's own league really.
I think you post the best tutorials in UA-cam about learning Beatles songs in the piano. I already learned For no One and A Day in the Life from you. This is next on my list
Nate- you have by far the best online piano tutorials. I only started playing piano a few months ago, and I love you chord-based approach. Would love to see you do a tutorial on Carole King's "You've Got a Friend"; there are several online videos out there, but they're all pretty complicated (at least for a beginner).
Hi Nate, you mentioned that this is one of your favorite Beatles songs. You should check out on you tube Spooky Tooth version (studio version). It is super slow and heavy. As usual, I love your song tutorials. Thanks
Good idea! I've been toying around with the idea of doing some doors songs, sometimes I hesitate because I'd have to leave out lots of the awesome keyboard improvisation that happens or the video would be too overwhelming to make, and too advanced for my audience...I'll mull it over!
Nate, that was brilliant and your voice is perfect for this song. If you would please do Captain of her heart by Double. I have tried but can't get it right. Thanks
Nicely done, this is an excellent demonstration but there are a couple of differences to how John plays it. Surprisingly, he didn't know about inversions in 1968 so the D9 and B7 that you do are not how he plays it on the recording. That second section in the verses where the left hand descends A G F# F, the right hand stays on the C# E as the thumb descends, there's no D note. Genius songwriter, primitive keyboardist. So whenever John plays a B he does the B D# F# thing, no inversion. Also, one thing I discovered in isolated tracks is that the intro strings playing block chords mimic John's left hand - he plays chords with his left hand on the intro and its reappearance later on. That's the only place he plays chords, the rest is just the one finger bass like you show here. Cheers.
Excellent comment, you are totally right about the second section of the verses!! I think I learned this incorrectly as a teenager, and how I used to play it influenced how I now hear it. I chose the B inversion because it sounded and flowed best to me...I don't always set out to teach exactly what the keyboard happened to play on the recording, and I factor in other elements of the arrangements like strings and guitars. That said, having had some distance from making this video, and reading your comment, I think I probably should have just stuck with a root position B. Cheers!
@@PianowithNate Thanks Nate, I've been playing it for years in a tribute band on guitar (I do George) and only recently really studied the song closely. I realised I haven't been playing the guitar right and had never bothered to work out the keys. Having the isolated stems is one thing, interpreting them correctly is another. They certainly help, that's for sure. When the isolated stems for Good Morning, Good Morning came out, everyone - and I mean everyone - had got the chords wrong. The mix had completely buried the chords eg the verses start out in the minor key. The bass would be playing C# over an Am chord. Weird but cool.
