Plenty of teaching moments here. Unless you want to get sucked into another crushing breaker, GET ALL THE WAY OUT OF THE WATER! Shorebreak like the Wedge or Sandy's is no place for beginners or even intermediate swimmers and surfers. Body boarder and guards did a great job.
one night years ago during huge swells i saw a woman at the top of the sand slope loose grip of her toddler when a rogue wave came all the way to the top. Kid was maybe 3 ft tall and was swept down the steep slope and into the water. Lifeguard jumped out of stand raced into the water grabbing the young kid before he got sucked into the upcoming next huge wave set. Dude absolutely saved that kids life with his quick action. Because of the huge surf the large beach crowd cheered and clapped for that amazing lifeguard.....will never forget
That’s my favorite spot. I’ve been knocked around and drug around out there a few times. One time I felt just wore out, like I had nothing left. I was right where this happened. Conditions exactly like this. It LOOKS like you can handle it, then you just get beat up and tired out. Scared the fuck out of me. I made it, but fuck I was scared there for a few minutes. Helpless. That’s the feeling. Right there, the normal southbound current is reversed and it really pulls you out and north. It can be glassy one minute and big the next. I grew up in the water, but I’m getting older and that “extra” that I always had, just isn’t there anymore, and there’s only one way to find that out: by nearly drowning at the Wedge.
Whem saving someone in the ocean.... they are almost always going to make things worse every time you feel like you may have it under control. I remember saving a guy once getting him out of the break zone and instead of calming down he instantly started trying to climb on me and hold me under. I punched him in the face swam away from him and told him id leave him there if he didnt relax 😂
Knarley shore break guy’s might put fins on before entry good to see rap round tubes to maintain contact with clients unlike LA County and their finless crews south swell season enjoy boys do you want an affirmative action lg watching your kids there
Was this an inexperienced bodyboarder that needed help or swimmer? Either way glad all were okay or hopefully all are okay. The Wedge is definitely not the place for beginners…. Just watching these waves and the unpredictability of what can happen should give anyone a heads up of the dangers that could lay ahead
Had the lifeguard try to get me one time (i didnt think i was in danger he did) and i screamed noooooooo 😂 and paddled away as fast as i could. He was mad

You need to flippers in that water but they’re the worst for exiting the shore break, tough choices. Great work guys
Great job!!
Lifeguards are first responders.

Oh, the melodrama🥱
Guess you were hoping to watch someone drown or get smashed into the jetty eh?
If you don’t know don’t go
