As a Flash enthusiast I will attempt to explain Eobard Thawne (reverse flash)... Reverse Flash was created when a scientist wanted to become The Flash and help the main one on missions. He later felt betrayed by The Flash for saving a crowd he was meant to save so he became the reverse of Barry. This causes him to run back in time and kill young Barry but fails to do so and kills Barry's mom instead. Reverse Flash then tries to leave back to his time and loses his speed before he can, forcing him to create and mentor Barry as he learns to become The Flash during season 1 of The Flash (Arrowverse/cw). Later on Eobard decides to change things around so that he becomes The Flash and Barry becomes Reverse Flash... but that's a whole other story.
Eobard Thawne is reverse flash from the future, who went back in time to kill Barry's mother, he got stuck in that timeline and basically killed Harrison Wells taking his face so he could recreate the flash and mentor him for a while, if he killed the flash, he would cease to exist.
